Push cart tipping

Recommended Posts

Alright...got a sun mountain GT and a stitch SL2.  Cart tips over (backwards) couple times a round, and really almost always needs a downhill lie to ensure it won't...

What have people done to keep this from happening?  Weight it?   Are the GT carts adjustable? Lead tape on the wheel? 😆

Obvious I'm sure, but is the front wheel fully opened/extended?

Because the cart will function if it's not, but the gravity center point will be way off.

I have a SM V1 cart and have used it with several bags and it has only tipped backwards once in many years.

I'll look at that but it should be...bag is crazy light...top heavy with clubs, drink, etc...

Add ballast to the bottom of the bag.  A few dozen golf balls should do it.

@WarEagleGolf:
"+1" on the ballast suggestion from @LeoLeo99

And IMHO... securing some ballast near the lower-section of the cart (e.g. refer screenshot)

(say, a water bottle/ sand canister & bungee corded to the lower spine of the cart & the underside of your bag ,
e.g. between the 3 wheels?) would lower the CoG and reduce the pushcart's tendency to tip over?

I was afraid ballast was the only option.  Hoping I was missing an adjustment bolt or something.

So...I did raise the handles a bit,..that helped. I kind of prefer the handles being a bit lower.  With wedges at that side of the bag (closest to the handle) and stuff in the basket and scorecard, etc etc. Would rather it be lower, but was workable.

I feel like if I could get the bag more vertical it might help.   The bag is crazy light.  I really like the ability to push this thing so easily, but it's one gust from flipping over.

I have the same cart and it can tip over backwards.. I tend to keep my bag full of golf balls to help

I picked up the 4 wheeler for my daughter and it is much more stable.. I steal hers from time to time

I got one of these to assist with a similar problem. I got the 2.2lb since I wanted to get the lightest that I could while still being effective and the thought being that if it wasn't working I would just get another.

Didn't happen with a heavier bag.  Now it does with the lighter option...I got an little more weight in the bottom of the bag, helped.

All the accessories go at the top of that cart though, so will have to rethink what I keep up there.  Or maybe try that 2-3 lb weight...which was what I cut purely out by changing bags, plus additional weight savings by not carrying as much stuff...sigh...

Ultimately at some point I'll need to replace the cart, but it's still got life for now.

I do not have the same cart and bag as you, but I had the same problem with my setup.  I put a sunday bag on a light caddytek cart and it would fall backwards several times per round.  I put up with it for years until the solution finally dawned on me.

I bought a five pound barbell weight off amazon and cable-tied it to the part of the push cart that the bottom of the bag sits on.  It is basically seamless and adds just enough weight to prevent tipping.  Of course, the cart is five pounds heavier taking in and out of the car, but that's not a problem for me.

I can post pictures later if that would be helpful.

Just lay the weight flat on the enlarged section and secure any way you choose.  As mentioned earlier, I used cable ties.

All push carts can have issues with lighter bags, it's just the nature of the setup - the lightest end of the clubs, your grip, is at the bottom of the bag while your clubheads are sticking out, angled toward you. It's all the weight leaning backward with nothing on the front wheel to prevent the tip. The only solution is more weight in the front. Either attaching mass to the front portion of the cart, or weight in the bottom portion of your bag through balls, etc. Or make yourself a wheelie bar.

Didn't, mean to hijack this thread, just trying to get some help for my cart.

Has anyone ever tried to modify a Motocaddy M5 with an anti tip device? i have one and have found that the cart, although it's awesome! still has an issue with tipping over, if it locates a low spot in the fairway. I have set the cart to walk 60 yards forward and if i am not right behind it, and it hits a low spot, well the rest is history over she go's. The M7 has the device, as this is a full remote unit, however, i like the M5 due to the full GPS mapping of courses located on the 3.5" screen.

To consider:

If you carry any kind of a water bottle in a holder near the handle, get rid of it.  Move the water to the front ball pocket of the golf bag; you’ve got a pretty major net change in weight distribution.

Consider getting a 32 oz Yeti thermos, or something similar.  Filled with water, it’s a lot of weight and great ballast, AND you’ll drink more water, too.

^^^This.  I still use an OG Clicgear with a late model Sun Mountain Sync bag.  My irons are +4" over standard so I do have to be thoughtful about balance, particularly if I'm going to use the umbrella, but I would not add a full 5lb of additional weight to the rig.

All I've had to do is move the things I do carry as low as possible, and if I keep my water bottle in one of the huge ball pockets low on the bag then it's fine, with no net increase in the weight of the rig.

To be fair, if I played courses without major elevation changes, I wouldn't care about 5lb.  Those courses do not exist where I live, so I'm more sensitive to adding weight.
