Is Dunes Club really that nice?

EastTNGolfer

Recommended Posts

Planning another trip to Myrtle Beach this October. I see I can book Dunes Club on the myrtlebeachgolf site for the Mon or Tues the week we are there. It's like 235 bucks though. I have never spent over 115ish on a round of golf. Is it really worth it? Like conditions and setup amazing?

That’s tough cause everyone’s value point is different. To me… yes. Conditions are always superb. Best course on the Grand Strand. Fall is prime time so if you are looking at $180 ish for Caledonia I would definitely pony up the extra $$$ for the Dunes.
It is one of those courses where you will remember every golf hole.

I played april of last year and paid 235 IMO it's not worth it.  The course is always well kept but for 235 I expected a little more.  It's a basic beach course to me without views of the ocean.  It's a great course that is usually in good condition but not worth the premium.

Played it in March of 2019 and it’s definitely top notch. There was a college event there the day before we played so the greens were in perfect condition. Not sure what we paid but $235 seems steep. But “worth” is up to you. That being said, if I go back to MB it’ll definitely be on my list of courses I’d like to play

I have played quite a few courses in MB. I'll probably only go back there one more time. Dunes Club is one that I will probably pony up and play. The other is True Blue. MAYBE two of the Barefoot courses that I have not played.

The Dunes in MB is very well maintained.  Rates have gone up in 2022 and MB is now using
dynamic pricing, so if you want to play don't wait too long or the rates will go higher and they
don't have many public tee times.

It's a course that avid golfers should like.  Most of us are not going to think any of the premium
courses in MB and other resorts are worth the peak season rates.  They get it because we are on vacation.

In Oct, make sure you verify when they overseed, which is usually around mid-Oct.

Didn't think about that, thanks. Going first week of October, hopefully it wont be an issue.

BTW, do you have any recommendations for courses? We played TPC, Caledonia, True Blue, and Kings North last August. Thinking about Dunes and 2 or 3 others for our October trip.

In college the Dunes Club was my pick for the best course on the Strand.  That was before the Barefoot Landing Courses as I haven't played those, but there were also a lot of courses there that are long gone (i.e. Wild Wing used to be 72 holes, now it's  just 18 holes).

Dunes Club was the best conditioned course on the Grand Strand.  The design was really good, but it doesn't have views of the beach that you would expect from a course right on the beach.  Design wise, I think Caledonia has higher top-end  golf holes like #5, #7, #8, #10, #11, #13 and #18.  But its weaker hole designs (#1, #9, #15) are weaker than anything the Dunes Club has.  The Dunes Club has it easily beat conditions wise because it gets far less traffic than Caledonia.

As ArtMBGolf stated, you may find it difficult to justify the cost of any of the premium golf courses during peak season.  Although since the Dunes Club is semi-private the pace of play and all of the things that can go wrong on the premium public courses, are not likely to go wrong at the Dunes Club.

It's really good, best setting of any Myrtle Beach course and plenty of History there (Sr tour Championship for 8 years and US Womens Open).  Golf Digest rates it best in Myrtle Beach area above Caladonia and True Blue.

I got lucky and qualified for the Carolinas Amateur there and got to play 3 rounds.  Ocean, Live Oaks, Spanish Moss, demanding, great time of year, should be in A1 condition, $$ sound reasonable in todays world...

Still tell story of hitting into waters edge on 15 and having to take off a shoe and enter the pond to hit it, most scared ever on golf course due to the number of Gators around...

Based on your last trip, type of course, location, where you have played, pick from:
Tidewater, Thistle, Prestwick, Heritage, Barefoot, Rivers Edge, Glen Dornoch,
TPC, Grande Dunes, Arrowhead.

The first week of Oct should be no problem with overseeding.  I often go to MB around then.
Overseeding is usually mid-Oct and later, but varies among courses and weather.

Do you use a packager?  What hotel?   I book with Brittain, which is MyrtleBeachGolf.com
I like looking at the rates on that website, to see what days + times are lower rates and if TT
are available.  The Dunes has been having public TT mostly on Mon-Wed only.

I played it a few years ago. It is a nice course, but for $235, it is not worth that price IMO.

Grande Dunes should be a little less and is an excellent course. I would look into Arrowhead as well.

Kings North maybe my favorite course in the area. The other 2 are lower end courses but not bad for the $$$.

😂😂 No way I put my foot any pond located on a coastal golf course south of Wilmington. That is how you lose a limb.
The SC Am is headed back to The Dunes this year I believe for the first time since 1987. The Dunes is a fantastic tournament course. A lot of risk reward. And great greens.
