Tour Tommy Fleetwood's TaylorMade TF Proto "2.5 iron" – 2022 U.S. Open

Plucked from his pre-P7TW stash, Fleetwood is considering using this 18-degree "TF Proto" 3-iron at the U.S. Open. He put it back in the bag at Colonial, and his caddie calls it a 2.5 iron because it's 2 degrees stronger than his usual P-7TW 3-iron (which is 20 degrees). He still has a bag full of P-7TW irons otherwise (4-PW), but he's still unsure whether he'll be using the TF Proto 3-iron or the P-7TW 3-iron this week. Either way, this thing hits low bullets and his caddie says he hits it 20 yards farther than the P7TW.

Obviously the angles can play tricks in photos, but that thing appears to have a negative bounce angle.

At least it will help prevent digging when starting the backswing...

Back in the early 80s, I used to carry a Slazenger 1 iron as my "fairway finder".  Still have my Eye2 version in the garage that I look at it in amazement sometimes.  I actually hit it last winter a few times.  Still rolls like crazy, but the highest ball flight was maybe 6' off the ground.  

 

As someone that bags lots of FWs and hybrids these days, I look at these now as medieval torture devices and can't imagine I ever carried them on purpose..

Judging by Tommy's swing, one would never know how long he can hit his irons. Insanely long.

Negative bounce is beneficial on a long iron like this IMO. You're coming in shallow and you need to get under the ball a little bit to launch it. Plus, it's not like Tommy Fleetwood is going to be chunking the crap out of it with a 3 iron
