You are on the range and your second to last shot is beautiful.  You look down at that last ball and just know that you are going to follow it up with another terrific shot.  You take your stance, swing, then hit it 2 miles fat and you have to end there because you are out of balls.

I work 3 days a week part time at a range. In the last month, I have over 200 non driving range balls that I assume are this exact thing. Hit their last ball fat so they reach into their bag and grab a ball. I have found everything from brand new Pro v1's to Calloway super softs in bright pink. I now have 2 baskets in my trunk for playable balls that look brand new or hit once and one for scuffed practice balls/give to my kids to play balls.

Just leave it and learn to quit while you're ahead.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

There's a way to fix that: When you get to your last 5 balls, and you flush one, just end it right there. Leave the remaining balls (if any) for the next guy. Leaving a couple of balls on the table isn't going to hurt anything.

That's exactly what I do when I have six balls left, the first one that I consider a "good" (for me) shot, I am done. That way the last shot I have hit on the range is mentally filed as "good" (once again for me, "good" being a relative measure)

You hit a beautiful drive, have 90 yards left, hit the second shot fat and only goes 30 yards. I pulled that beauty twice this week.

Similar to this is the three-shot par 5 where you execute a sensible, less-than-driver off the tee and find the fairway, and then take a sensible second shot (again onto the fairway) to your favorite lay up yardage with your favorite short iron/wedge left into the green, and then, from prime position with a green light at the flag, your third shot not only misses the green, but also ends up in a hazard, or OB, or you're left with a ridiculous scrambling situation.

For me, it's the most frustrating way to make worse than bogey.

A par 5 just gives you more ways to screw up...

You sign in at the clubhouse at 1:00 for your 1:15 tee time ... and there are 4 groups stacked up at the first tee.

Or the opposite. I show up at a course in Myrtle Beach at 9:00 AM for a 10 AM tee time. To get real-world stuff done before the trip, I haven't touched a club in a week. So, I want to chip and putt and hit some full shots.

But, the starter says a golf outing has cancelled, and  I'm going to tee off immediately. I say no, he says yes... Then, I have to negotiate with the head pro to keep my 10 AM tee time. (got to keep the tee time, but the negotiations cut into my warm-up time, which I needed)

I once got told off by a range attendant for finishing on one of my regular balls. Apparently our range balls are 10-15% shorter than a normal ball, and if "real" balls gets into the system, some people might get them over the net at the back of the range.

Well the range I currently work for is only about 250 yards and balls are constantly hit over the back trees and into the road so no one says anything.
