I am very happy with the I230 UW/PW. I play southern Arizona courses which can get pretty hardpan. But I only play them like short irons, not necessarily like a wedge, 3/4 to full shots primarily. They are my 125/140 yd clubs. Anything around a 100 or less, or a tricky lie, i'm grabbing my 54 or 58.

Is anyone playing a hybrid instead of the i230 4 iron…if so what brand/loft

My course has 2 long par 4’s that leave a 190-200 yard uphill shot to a well protected green and I’m thinking of a hybrid instead as both these holes are late in the round and it’s a tough shot with a 4 iron

Top of The list is TSR2 with either AV Blue or 1K black but I’m unsure whether (in theory) the 21 of the 24 hybrid would be a better replacement - based on specs (22.5’ i230 4 iron and 26’ i230 5 iron) I’m thinking the 24’ would be a better replacement??

My current gapping is as follows:

7i - 170yds

6i - 180yds

5i - 190yds

4i - 200yds

5w (19’) - 225-245

I’m looking for a club that goes no further than 210yds, testing facilities local to me are all range balls so hard to properly test so looking for advice

Could anyone give me an idea of how the i230 irons would compare with the S56 irons (KBS Tour S) I currently play please?

I'm now in my early 50s and have been playing the S56s for almost 10 years. Handicap ranges from 9-13.

I'm happy with the S56s, but looking to get into some irons that are easier to hit/more forgiving, but aren't in the G.I. category.

Thanks in advance!

I play standard i230 5i at 26d and then G430 5h at 24,5d. For some reason G430 hybrid has really hot face but with good spin and launch.

5w 240y (7w shaft)

5h 225y

5i 210y

The i230 are have an MOI in the same range as the G20 or G25 that were out around the same time as the S56.  The downside, the CG of the 230 is quite a bit higher than the 56.  If you have a shallower swing (sweeper), it's possible the 230s may not work as well for you as the 56s do.

Testing that is about the only way you'll know for sure.

I play a Tsi2 4 hybrid lofted up one degree(think that’s at 22)…works well for me

We're somewhat close in yardages (I'm maybe 10yds shorter in the middle of the bag for 7i, 6i) but 5i yardages more like 5yds apart. With the caveat that I'm not sure if your yardages are carry or total, I play the Ping G425 Hybrid lofted up and consistently see 185yd carry running out to 200-205yds, and 210yds if I absolutely smoke it.

I'm guessing you have a bit more swing speed than me, so I would maybe suggest getting the 5 hybrid and lofting down a touch, which would then allow you to get a slightly higher stop and drop trajectory, as I do typically see 8-12yds of rollout with the shallower 4 hybrid trajectory.

You're going to get more forgiveness out of anything on the shelf today, save the BP-T.

You might like the Blueprint-S if you're a 56 connoisseur. You might consider what I'm considering, which is a blend. I'm over a year into these 230s, and I'm finding the short irons not feeling right with the ground conditions locally - which is dry most of the time. Sole is too wide, and I'm back to being a sweeper. It's not great, but I also don't want an injury. I'm going to get short iron BP-S to swap out, but I'll keep playing the 230 shorts during the rainy winter. Come October, I want those smaller ones in the bag.

I say that because I think you'll feel more comfortable that way as well. They're all same L/L/L, so it's no problem to combine the sets.

Good luck.

I am a 7 wood believer...might go too far for you, but can always dial loft up. So easy to hit, probably my favorite club in the bag. Mine is a G425 at standard 20.5*, but am hunting for a G430 head. Ping guy was at my course last week and said he probably moves more 7W than any other FW or hybrid. I have 5-UW i230 and have thought about getting 4 iron, but I am so comfortable with the 7W I'm not sure a 4i would be much help or half as consistent as the 7W.

I use a PING iCrossover 4 instead of a 4 iron. I go from a G430 7 wood, iCrossover 4, i230 5-P.  Seems to gap nicely.
