I’m very interested in these but hesitant because I play in firm conditions and usually like less bounce. Are the power specs effectively the same as the normal specs but bent to loft down (and thus reduce the bounce)? Or are the actually the same in every way as their corresponding normal spec just built with a lower loft?

They are bent, therefore reducing the bounce like you need. i230s are really great irons, give them a chance!

  • 1 month later...

Playing them with LA Golf A series - low -in stiff flex.
Really the first time that I have gone 4 months with the same irons without even considering looking at something else. I will give a lot of the credit to the LA shafts. But the heads are certainly doing their part.
I know me and I won’t likely play them forever but I am sure not looking at anything else. The feel is not Srixon butter, the distance is not P790 stuff…..but they are forgiving and SO consistent.
I have them in the bag with a couple of g430 hybrids, a g430 three wood, a g430max 10k driver, 3 pro forged wedges, and a PLD putter. There is nothing I want to trade out or trade for.

I really liked the i230 after demoing at my club, but am tired of impulse iron purchases not working out. So, I bought a used i230 7 iron from 2nd swing in the shaft I want and had it bent to my specs for a few more bucks. I have played a few rounds with it and I am sold! I had it bent to power spec and still have a nice high trajectory and gained a few more yards over my i210's. Playing with the iron in actual rounds vs beating a turf mat really made the difference for me. I am hunting for a decent used set and can send the 7 iron back to 2nd swing with their 60 day play guarantee and can use it towards the iron set purchase. Might be the way I buy clubs going forward. I think the one thing that sold me on the i230 is the dispersion...it just wants to go straight where you aim it. Amazing.

2ndswing has tons of i230 sets right now and running 10% off. Problem is they don’t say whether they are power spec or not.

Also big fan of them bending an iron for a nominal charge. I’ve done it with used wedges that I bought and knew the loft I needed.

Look at the shaft just below the grip. If you see a tiny sticker around the band, those are power spec'd.

Would be interested to see more BP-S vs i230 comparisons. Seems similar to slightly less forgiveness for the BP with more spin. I230 are borderline low for me spin wise, sometimes short irons out of rough can get a little hot. Maybe a 4-7 i230 and 8-pw BP-S would be a great combo but not sure if it would be a big gap between the 7 and 8. While the lofts are the same, the spin may be a bit diff and make a big 15-16 yd gap.

I found the I230 Power Spec forgiving but a half club short.  Going to give the ZX5 MkII a run this year.

Is that standard Miz loft? If so 7 iron 30* vs 31.5* for PS i230 so half a club makes sense. Plus 225 is a players distance club and is hollow if I'm not mistaken, so not a big surprise. And if you're swinging DG120 X100, you're not exactly making a casual wave at the ball LOL.

TBH never really thought about the degree and a half really mattering that much but you are 100 percent correct.  Maybe they’ll get another run at some point 😁

When I was fit for irons just over four years ago I could have gone i210 or g410. I chose g410 as I expected to play less golf.

Fast forward to today and I made a mistake. The g410 are great and forgiving but too low spin for me and I struggle to hold greens. I’d also rather miss short than left or right as I do now. However I don’t want to give up all forgiveness, so how forgiving are the i230?

I went from the G425 to the I230 a few months ago. My miss is fat and it seems to be very similar in that regard. The face is a bit shorter heel to toe, it took me a few weeks to adjust away from the hosel. The distances in the shorter irons are the same but the loft progression is different, at least compared to the 425, the I230 5i loft is similar to the 425 6i loft. I now have a slot to fill in the upper irons/hybrid area.

Picked up a pristine set of i230's a couple weeks ago.  (Also got the C130 bag they're in at the same time.) Ping said they left the factory with standard lofts.  Probably have a half dozen rounds in.  It's the time of year when temps are cold, fairways are either hard or mushy, etc.  But...

Have been extremely pleased with these irons.  The "grabbing" I get with spin on the greens is awesome.  They irons are forgiving.  Went from some i25's, which I had only a short time, and I have found them similar in distance.

Really looking forward to this season with these in the bag.....

If I had the capacity to do that, I'd do it today. I completely agree with you. Played plenty in North Texas, and the courses well above the water table… this would be a big help.

Ok so that sole grinding is really interesting. I like Pings too but they don’t work well where I live. Turf is way too firm most of the time. Dry and lots of clay in the dirt.

So off topic, but what are better irons for this since I don’t want to mess with sole grinding on the 230s?

Anything with a thinner sole, with some camber to it. Look at the Maltby TS1-IM irons. Lots of "players" irons from Titleist, Taylormade and Mizuno.

Update! Scored a set 5-U DG105 S300 off the bay for $750 and sent them to Ping for loft/lie...delivered to Ping on Monday and shipping out today, so I should have them for the weekend HOTDAMN. Not sure if any of you fellow Ping/Golfwrx hoes live in the Atl area, but traveling for biz this week and slipped by the PGASS in Kennesaw and they had a pretty nice set of I230's DG105 S300 5-U for $ 799 in their used section. Very odd though, they had an almost identical set priced at over $1000.00, may have been slightly cleaner but wouldn't have hesitated on the cheaper set. Hope the weather holds and I can go shank a few with the new sticks!

I switched from Mizuno 223 to I230s last fall and it's been the best decision ever. I lost about 10 yards per club but increased spin and height with better decent angle (different shafts, modus 130x) and my hcp went down 2 strokes this winter...can't wait till spring!

I’m thinking about ordering this exact combo. PGASS has modus 130 at no upcharge

I finally had a chance to demo the Blueprint S today, and compare it to my i230s.

The Blueprints are gorgeous. Just terrific-looking irons. However, they're a little less forgiving. (No surprise there.)

I was on Trackman at Golf Galaxy with ProV1X RCT balls. 7 irons with both. Carrying well-struck shots with both right at 165-166 today. Spin and peak height were actually just about the same. Maybe Blueprint S just a tick higher on both, but not enough so that I'd be confident saying it was anything other than my delivery that was responsible for the differences. I was trying to identify some very similar mishits to get a sense of how they compared in terms of forgiveness. With both, I had a pretty badly low-heel miss. With the i230s, carry distance dropped to 153. With the Blueprint S, it dropped to 147. (I'd call both pretty good ... I mean, these were ugly misses.) I also had a nasty, slappy toe strike on both -- similar story; i230 carry dropped to 155, Blueprint S was 150.

The other thing I noticed was a tendency to turn the Blueprint S over. But my i230s are spec'ed specifically to make it harder for me to do that -- heavier-than-standard swing weight, with extra weight in the toes -- so no real surprise there. My i230s have my Axiom 105X shafts in them, and I was hitting DG 120 S300s in the Blueprint S.

Not a ton of data to share -- it was just a brief comparison -- but that's what I noticed.

Visually, the Blueprint S is a smaller iron for sure than i230, but it's not jarringly small. If you prefer slightly shorter blade lengths, you'll like it.

I could definitely see a combo set, since they have the same lofts and I was getting the same top-end performance from them.
