Pure'd Shafts or Lazy Builder???

jt2gt

Recommended Posts

Bought some used Srixon ZX5 irons with Steelfiber shafts and the shaft labels are all over the place.  Really don't notice when I am playing.  Only time I have ever seen this is when SF shafts are Pure'd, but there are none of those fancy round "P" stickers.  Any thoughts on if they are Pure'd or if the builder was just lazy and slapped them together any old way.  Any other way to tell if shafts have been Pure'd (I really just tell myself they are😃).

Know way to know for certain if they were pured (or FLO'd wouldn't leave a sticker) or not w/o actually talking to the builder.

"lazy" isn't necessarily and accurate alternative.   Building with labels consistently oriented might be common but it is not a universal convention by any means.

Considering they're both high-end components and the heads are relatively recent production, I'd probably lean toward assuming the shafts are spine aligned.

I agree with the two replies above. They are most likely just visually FLO'd (Flat Line Oscillation) or Spined using a mechanical device.

Since I quoted the wrong guy.  I guess I'll quote you.  Why not ask the Seller?

Not sure if it matters either way. Unless you're trying to resell them and use Pure'd in the title with out lying, it isn't going to make a difference.

yeah...I hear you.  More of a golf OCD thing than anything else.  Like I said, I have paid attention to it less and less as I have played them and liked them.

Look at the ferrules. If the quality of the ferrules is above decent, I'd have a hard time believing the shafts were just thrown in willy nilly.

That's a great point. @jt2gt Check to see if they've been turned and how they fit against the hosel (post some close up detailed pics if you don't know what to look for). It's not a guarantee, but ferrule work (or lack thereof) is a decent indicator of who might have assembled them. The guy that doesn't care about graphic alignment on the shafts likely doesn't care much ferrule finish work either and that would be easy to spot.

Thanks all. Great point and the ferrules look good to me and I am ocd about that too. Flush and turned nicely. Nothing out of the ordinary.

If you are willing to change one grip, often times puring will have a line on it with a marker under the grip on the shaft to make sure it is being built correctly.  Unless the person is building one or two sets a day it would be difficult to remember the exact orientation of the spine without some sort of mark to denote which way it needs to go.   So you could change one grip or have it blown off and pull the tape and see if it has that mark.
