Being told how to hit a shot in team play, does it help or hurt?

From my perspective in team play if someone is open to it you want to play the role of a good caddie. Sometimes that is just distance, hazards or the like and sometimes it can be to point out other things even to the point of telling them it's a very high risk/reward shot they are contemplating. In odd situations I often will ask what kind of shot my partner is thinking about. Truthfully though unless it's insane I will usually just say something like "I like it and stay committed to it" to encourage them. If someone is not open to team advice, they just need to make that known. If you don't tell them and you get advice you may not want... that might just be on you.

 

All that said... I don't believe in telling them how to hit the shot, that is the players responsibility to know their own game and act accordingly.

I recently experienced a better golfer directing me during a team match and I have to say it sucked.  This person knows nothing about my game or how it's working at the present moment or what I intend to do with a shot but they continuously tell me what I should do based on their skill set.  If I tell them to shut up it ruins the round, if they keep directing me the round is ruined.  How would wrx handle the person who keeps directing a golfer who doesn't need the advice? 

 

I'm trying to golf within my skill set and trying for the best result.  I don't need coaching from someone who has enough problems of their own (I'm in the fairway with a 130 yard approach shot and being told where to hit my shot).  I make par and the advice giver bogies.

I never minded "this will move right" on a putt, or the hidden hazard is just past that tree.  I hated "it's a cup left" type of advice.  Putting is so individual that a cup left for you may be straight for me.

Stu mentioned it, but in our little regular group was a guy who assumed the responsibilities of Peter Kostis and the Minolta Biz-Hub.  Knew nothing, was often opposite about what happened, so we ignored him, or argued for fun.  Small town, so, it happens.  Good thing, he had eyes like an eagle, "yeah, your ball is about 5 feet left of the cart path, just in that longer grass" type thing.
