New Cobra King Tec Hybrid 2023

Did a little test with 2021 King Tec hybrid 17 degree (set at 15.5) compared to Mizuno CLK 16 degree (set standard to 16).

Some initial results.

 

Ball speed, very very similar. I expected the King Tec, being 0,5" longer shaft and 0,5 degree lower loft to have som more pop. Both were maxing out at about 150mph ballspeed. 

 

Workability/forgiveness, both hard for me to turn over (draw) which I kinda like. Forgiveness off the face seemed a little bit better on King Tec. Tried King Tec with weight at draw, did not like. Tried draw setting on shaft, did not feel cofortable with such a upright setting.

 

Look and feel. I like them both OK. Sound on King Tec 2023 (tested several days earlier) I remembered to feel much nicer and more powerful than 2021 King Tec. 

 

Spin: This was big difference. I saw -500 rpm on King Tec compared to CLK. Which for me, works better as a 3-wood replacement club.

i prefer the two-tone of the 2021 version ... 

from these photos, these look to be bonded-hosel...

...but IIRC ... these have the adjustable loft sleeve adapter? (which also enables easier plug-and-play shaft changes?)

You're right. Real ones have the adjustable sleeve. Not sure why they couldn't include that in their marketing images. 🤷‍♂️

looking to pick the 2023 version

Anyone try these and compare to tsr2/3? I loved the 2021 king tecs in the 3 hybrid and was great on distance. For this one Im looking more in the 24deg range as a 4i replacement so not chasing distance as much as height and landing angle

I recently hit the TSR3 and I was immediately impressed and I preferred it to other recent Titleist hybrids and the refined shape really suited my eye, it performed well and produced fast ball speed but was launching and spinning quite high although maybe that was shaft related.

 

I had previously tested both Cobra hybrids which are both a little larger than the TSR3 but are very nicely shaped, I initially tested the King Tec 2023 and it was also very impressive and was quite similar to the TSR3 for launch and spin but the Aerojet was the pick of the bunch for me as it produced the highest ball speed and much lower spin while retaining decent launch, my only complain with both Cobra hybrids is their longer shaft lengths especially as I would never exceed 40.5" for a 17 degree and 40" for a 19/20 degree hybrid.

 

I never tested any hybrids with more than 21 degrees, it depends on how much you spin your hybrids and your speed but since you are seeking increased launch and a steeper descent angle, the King Tec and TSR3 may suit you slightly better so long as you get the correct shaft, the Aerojet was easily the best hybrid off the tee from my testing.

I went with this over the tsr2.   Really could have gone either way.  It is working out well as a 4 iron replacement though.  It seemed less likely to go left for me than the tsr2, although it was not a big difference.  This years model is not as impossible to turn over as the 2021 (which I loved about the 2021) but it is still very anti left.

What came in it. A mmt 80g s I think?  Dunno, but I do absolutely enjoy this in 4hy

The MMT 80 Stiff

 

Tried the X Stiff (play X-stiff HZRDUS driver, Fairways etc) but it was too slicy/fadey for me.

Hybrid of the year IMO. They are long and anti-left. Sound and feel is excellent. I’ve got a 19 I am about to unload but only to replace it with a Cobra 22 for the gapping I want. The 19 goes as long as my 7 wood.

Agreed, not a hybrid guy and tried a buddies. Ordered immediately and favourite club in the bag. Can hit high towering off a tee and can hit spinnier when required. Very versatile and anti-left.

I had the 2021 version and hated the looks of it, the 2023 version looks like a notable upgrade in the looks department.

After using both a 2021 model 2 hybrid, and a 2023 model 4 hybrid, I can say that they're both awesome.

 

And, it's hard to see or feel a difference between the two models for me. The main difference is the looks, and you get used to those differences quite easily.

 

I also have the 2021 in a 3 hybrid, but the gap of the 2 and 4 suits me better at the moment.

 

I've not even touched the weights on any of them, and the adjustability is a nice, yet also not dabbled with, option.

These are far and away my favorite hybrids of all time. I absolutely love them, and currently play the 2, 4, and cycle in the 5 depending on how I'm feeling. The hybrids are fast, anti-left, and incredibly stable. I paired Ventus Black 9X in the 2 & 4, and a 10X in the 5 and they just go straight. The 2 hybrid is my favorite club I've ever owned. Don't know what it is, but it just works. I recently played a round with a caddie and he named it Danny Glover because it's a lethal weapon 🙂 . In my opinion these are an easier to hit and more versatile Cally UW style club. Part hybrid, part fairway wood, and 100% awesome.

Still considering 2023 version in 21” to replace my hit and miss Uw21. 

How did they compare?
