Tour Rickie Fowler testing putters (Scotty Cameron vs. Odyssey mallets) – 2023 The American Express

He's most likely switching into the Odyssey Versa Jailbird this week, but he was testing out a Scotty Cameron T5S putter and playing with the weights on Wednesday. I talked to him about it, so there's a lot more info to come on this switch.

Interesting that he's going longer and gripping down. Probably has a heavy countercore weight. Wonder what specs he's working with.

I am really surprised more pros have not switched to counterbalanced putters. Victor Hovland, Beau Hossler, Brian Harmon and Will Zalatoris are the only ones I can think of that are using counterbalance setups.

 

It is a very stable way to putt while still being somewhat traditional looking. Better than Armlock or Broomsticks IMO.

It's just a really weird feel.to get used to for guys who grew up with std length.

What insert is on the Odyssey? I can't make it out, but it almost looks like the original Micro Hinge.

Stroke Lab putters are basically counterbalanced. See quite a few of those on tour.

I'd love to know what he is actually looking for. Formerly one of the best putters in the world now doing the pro version of trolling around Golf Galaxy every weekend trying everything on the putting green. I can't help but wonder if he has an eye/vision issue.

100% - out of interest, I have tried them a couple of times and just could not get to work with the feel. I usually leave putts short, with the counter balance, I could have used a wedge to get some of the balls to the hole!

Willie Z is a bad one to add to that list from an SG perspective.

Counterbalance is a love/hate with me.  I have a couple, a blade and a mallet and the honeymoon lasts about a month or so.  I'll make everything with them for a while and think it's great but once that wears off I'm more inconsistent with them than I am with standard weighted putters. So I put them away for a while and then the cycle repeats itself.

 

I'm an OK putter.  Not great, not awful.  But I'd rather be consistently just OK than manically great/awful like I seem to be w/counterbalance.

Looks like the microhinge insert with the Odyssey logo removed to me

Cpl made cuts under the belt. Haven't seen or compared his stats, but if it's freeing him up taking pressure of approach game all the power to him.

Saw some highlights from Torey Pines last night. Only shot from Rickie was a chip from the apron. The commented that it was a "goo thing he wasn't putting..."

 

Seems like might be struggling to find something that works.

Funny you should mention that as on the Rick Shiels vs Rickie video, Rickie did mention that without his sunglasses his vision was pretty poor nowadays

pretty interesting two putters. jailbird with microhinge-very very soft putter. T5S is the 303 body with 6061 aluminum - soft but not as soft as micro hinge. It looks like not only is he going for a longer putter, but a softer feel. Traditionally he used a NP2 with a slightly milled face - then experimented around with different millings in the scotty's...now it seems as though he's settling in on softer feeling putters. Interesting stuff - I bet a scotty is back in play in near future.
