Let me explain my position and then we can move on from this discussion. It will not bother me one bit if I am the only one in our group that thoroughly dislikes Rap and Hip Hop.

When you grew up as I did listening to and loving the wonderful music that was made by the groups on my list you experienced musicians and singers that had real talent, and the music they made was cherished by much of the listening public. Rap and Hip Hop is a far cry from the music these bands contributed, and don't get me started on the difference in the lyrics of the songs or the appearance of the performers. I am grateful that there was a bunch of awesome R & B music to listen to in my early years, and I will continue to enjoy the real music from back in the day as I enter into my old man years. 🕺

Rap and Hip Hop have not been good for society in general either.

GLORIFYING VIOLENCE
'Gangsta rap' is a hip-hop sub genre that focuses primarily on the negative aspects of inner city life. The lyrics often glorify criminal activity and degrade women. This genre of hip-hop has been a source of tremendous controversy and is often cited as the cause of the increase in violence within communities.

SEXUALISATION
A topic that has heated up recently is the sexualisation of women not only in the lyrics of rap music, but more importantly the visual representation of women in music videos. The popularity of music videos has reinforced the overt sexuality found in hip-hop music. Women in these videos are often scantily clothed and use their bodies to get material things. Young women are surrounded by these negative images, and many have adapted their lifestyles to fit them.

DRUG USE
The promotion of drug use is consistently found through rap verses and often glorified. Rappers fail to show the negatives and the consequences of using and doing them. You’ll hear in multiple rap songs how they hustled in the corner to gain streetcred and eventually become wealthy and live “large” as they would say. Young and poor youths from the ghetto are the most impressionable. If he can do it, why can’t I. The music videos only exhibit the women cars and houses, who wouldn’t want that.  2008 article on sciencedaily.com found that drug references in rap songs had increased sixfold since 1979

 EGOTISTICAL
There are a number of rappers that are quite egotistical and many rap songs can be basically be boiled down to "I'm the best, toughest, and hardest. Don't agree with me, I'll prove it"?
The scary thing is that this mentality seems to be contagious and when combined with the glorification of violence, we have people murdering other people for inconsequential slights. We've gone from "words will never hurt me" to "stick and stones may break my bones, but words will cause me to get a bunch of friends, drive by your house, pepper it will bullets, kill you, maim your girlfriend, kill the little girl playing out front, and get myself imprisoned
throughout the formative years of my adult life so I have destroyed whatever opportunity my life may have held. "

You're not the only one LP.

I appreciate just about any genre of music.  Exploring into the unfamiliar has always been an impetus to discovery.  It either catches my ear or it doesn't.  It's well crafted, or it's not.  Innovative or disposable.  I enjoy most, several I categorically despise.  My dime, my spin.

I'd post some techno that I enjoy on occasion.  Belleville 3.  Originators.  Look it up.  But have a feeling that would cause apoplexy in the lounge.  Not "real" music.

I'll leave it to the rest of y'all to over analyze what I'm listening to at any given moment.

I really only started listening to EDM/techno stuff in the last few years. I’ve posted a couple knowing it won’t get any love. But figure we suppose to represent what we’re feeling. If I’m “hungry’ for love I’ll just post the obvious 60s/70s rock! 🤣 It’s like flies w/honey 😜

As with all music and art,

You are simply seeing, in Hip Hop/Rap, an artistic expression of the deepest themes, experiences, and culture, of a group of people.

I’d argue that this expression is highly constructive to the overall understanding of inner city history and perspective and reality ….rather than it being swept under the rug, and pretending that it doesn’t exist.

I’ll never pass judgement on rap or the ppl that make rap bcs to think you can understand what they have been through or deal with, is completely ignorant. We are talking about a race of ppl that were FORCED to come here and were then SOLD as slaves and have been systematically repressed and looked down upon ever since. I can’t even begin to imagine. If it’s not for you fine, I get it. But to pass judgment and think you understand… That’s all I’ll say and will move on.

You can’t explain it, you either feel it or you don’t! For me an EDM banger just reminds me of happy, care free times just dancing and enjoying the party.

Ha ha, don't ever watch some of the Brasilian and Colombian videos if seeing beautiful woman doing womanly things bothers you. They really put the wowzer in wowzer, and the music is actually pretty good most times. Not the Spanish rap type stuff unless that is your groove (did I use that phase correctly 🙂)

My first thought was Tawny Kitaen when I read this, but I do sort of see it.  I don't love rap, but many of my black friends do and they tell me its because i don't understand what is happening to them on a daily basis.

Have her listen to J. J. to see if she still hates country music.

... I think the most dumbfounding thing about music, especially for those of us that passionately love music, is it is virtually impossible to comprehend how something that sounds so pleasing to our ear, releasing copious amounts of dopamine while touching our soul and our psyche can not only not be shared by others, but actually produce the opposite effect. We can understand it on an intellectual level of course but as the saying goes, it just doesn't compute. I can't imagine a world where every song sounded the same.

... Without going into the politics, I think it is similar to folks on the right and left that both think they are patriots while those on the other side are Anti Americans that hate this country. When the reality of course is this country is exactly why they can have such a diverse opinion and they are both correct. That doesn't mean you can't vehemently oppose those whose opinions are the complete opposite of yours, you just have to accept them as the price of democracy. On this tiny template of a select few we have our very own musical sovranty with their love of all music from every era and those content with their own little box and a very narrow appreciation, while others have their favorites but are willing to branch out selectively and all are equally valid.

As someone who has spent years traveling down there I must say Bogota is my favorite, not only is the weather always nice and cool but the woman folk are in a class of their own imo. Now people from Medellin will agrue the woman there are more beautiful but frankly it is a wonderful wash again imo.

I was in Bogota one week and mentioned to my friend that in the restaurant we were in the number of woman to men was 3-1 and all of them were stunning. He said tomorrow I will show you something if you think this is beautiful woman.

For lunch the next day we went down to the Banking district and sat at an outdoor table just before noon, at noon and I am not exagerating at all the number of groups of woman that came out of the offices was nuts, these were groups of 4-6 maybe more and it seemed each group was more stunning than the stunning group before it.

I always told my son if he would learn spanish and move to Bogota he would be a happy man, if I ever decide to bail out on 46 years of marriage that is where I would go. Even an old man has a shot there....I aked my friend's wife over quite a bit of wine if it ever bothered her about all the beautiful woman (she was also stunning) and she said "no we Colombian woman are crazy and will cut him if he even thinks of straying"  I believed her with all my heart as did he.

Brasilian woman are much more varied and generally larger in places you can imagine for yourself so it is just a matter of what catches your eye. There seems to be a lot more Brasilian men compared to Colombia and not to sound too iffy but the vast majority seem to be fit and would be desirable to most woman of the world so things seem to even out on that front.

I hope this post does not offend anyone it is meant in fun, not to demean woman in anyway. I know in the current climate it is more than likely wrong to even mention this sort of thing but i am old and don't care anymore 🤠

Where I work, we have stereos (more like boom boxes) in a lot of labs and whoever is in there first controls the music.  I had a long-time coworker who regularly listened to Chinese opera on full blast.  It being graveshift, our group of 5 were the only ones around so she had no fear of being told off.  It was pure torture if you were unfortunate enough to be anywhere near the lab where she was working
