Hahah So. When I did my Scotland trip in 2019, I was striking the ball spectacularly. But I could not make a damn putt to save my life on any of the courses I played. When I was walking off #9 at Carnoustie (which was my last round of the trip); I was going over my scorecard and said "Ah, 38. Not too bad." And my amazing old Irish caddie that day says "Ay lad, you go back to California and learn how to putt ... then come back. That should have been a 34." 😂

 

I've always thought of myself as a decent putter ... but he was right. So when I got home, I really started studying putting and putters. Like a deep dive into the engineering that makes them all different. To help, I designed up a little device to help me get stats about my putting stroke; just a little thing out of an Arduino and various components then wrote some code for an app on my phone that would capture the data via Bluetooth and present it along with a 3D render of a stroke. Had a buddy with a 3D printer make me a little case that I could attach to my putter. Off I went to fix my putting.

 

After working with it a bit, I got to thinking I should improve the design of the device and start selling them ... cuz it was super helpful. So next, obviously, was what do I call it? 

 

My old Hollywood apartment was on Argyle Avenue - was living there when I got real deep into Arduino programming. My whole life - and still - my mom has given me argyle socks for Christmas. I kinda love the argyle pattern. And it has a bit of a connection to golf, too. But just "Argyle" was kinda generic. But if I describe it ... "Project Argyle?" Now it's pretty cool. 

 

Spent weeks illustrating up the mark. And kinda love it! And I'm the biggest critic of myself when I get into doing any sort of branding design. Probably the one thing I've designered up in my whole life that I didn't hate like a day after calling it "done."

 

I never got to actually release the device. But the name's lived on.

Thanks!  In the previous 300 or 400 releases, I just couldn’t stand the top line of those, the difference between the new version of the 350 and 200 isn’t as significant.

Really cool idea, but just looking at the prototype, it seems like it would add a decent amount of weight.  If you were using to gauge your path wouldn’t the weight be providing false info when it’s off?  What other info woukd it measure?
 

I know nothing about Arduinos or writing code, so my questions my be remedial.  I think this could be a great product if it was smaller, easy to attach and collects accurate data.

The components themselves didn't weigh much at all but yeah, the casing was a little chunky and was a concern. On the software side, I was normalizing for it. I hindsight, wish I had my fancy swing weight scale I have now. Probably would have saved some time.

 

I got so far along as to design a production hardware schema in Fritz and a slick little casing in Fusion360 - would have been about half the size and the shape of a Bic lighter. The weight of that would have been negligible. 

 

The biggest reason I stopped working on it was I got a freelance project opportunity that actually paid me pretty well. Took about 6 months to build and after that was done; I was kinda over working after my day job. 

 

But I learned a ton doing all I did. Which - as a developer - is my favorite thing. My life is a series of unfinished projects 😂

I built a lil tube amp kit years back. Wanted to learn how the circuitry worked.

 

 

Didn't require much effort but it was a fun learning process!

BFCC has the best course conditions in this part of NC NorCal. Big budget and large grounds maintenance staff. It's most always in primo condition.

I'm fortunate I get to play it so often.

The absolute dumpster fire 🔥 that currently goes by the name Oakland A’s, are fresh of a 0-7 loss to the Mariners. It is now estimated that a stadium in Vegas won’t be ready til 2028. Their lease in Oakland ends after next season. So where do they lose (play) for the four to five years between??? I’m hearing possibly at their minor league stadium. Oh how perfectly befitting 😊

A’s owner Steve Fisher has absolutely f’d this up beyond belief.

I found the Rickie pick weak. I am completely pissed that Zach passed on Keegan. Keegan Bradley should be on that team. 

As far as the JT pick you have to think the Captain was looking at the last two years body of work regarding his selection. He factored in I'm sure his Match Play record as well. The JT pick reeks of Old boy network / Frat Brother bonding and that is probably really what it came down to.  Let me say this though, if JT and Spieth get hot together in the Ryder Cup the American golfing fans will be smiling large. 🏌️‍♀️

It's kinda both, if that makes sense. 

 

All travel related expenses - gas, hotels, one meal a day - are paid out of what we make at gigs and selling merch. At the end of a run, there's a split of pay to each of us and then the rest stays in the band fund. The band fund goes to covering things like buying more merch, maintenance to the van and - eventually - recording. 

 

So do I come home with some cash in hand? Yes! Is it a lot? Nope. The main reason I do it is because it's just simply f'in fun.
