Posting to GHIN?

Recommended Posts

Do you post your scores when playing winter rules?

If I'm rolling the ball I typically wont post, unless I'm playing in competition (skins, tournament, etc).

Curious what others do that play in the wet and cold when the course is a mess and they aren't mowing or grooming the course.

If I'm playing winter rules it usually means we're out of season. So no, not posting scores.

Q. How do I determine if a score is acceptable for handicap purposes?

A. A score is acceptable for handicap purposes if the round has been played:

  • In an authorized format of play (see Rule 2.1a) over at least the minimum number of holes required for either a 9-hole or an 18-hole score to be acceptable (see Rule 2.2),
  • In the company of at least one other person, who may also act as a marker (subject to satisfying any other requirements of the Rules of Golf),
  • By the Rules of Golf (see Rule 2.1b),
  • On a golf course with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating, where length and normal playing difficulty is maintained at a consistent level (see Appendix G),
  • On a golf course during its active season.

If one or more of the requirements set out above is not met, the score is not acceptable for handicap purposes. (Rule 2.1, Rules of Handicapping)

We are on preferred lies, winter rules or lift clean and place whatever your preference.

Otherwise the course is normal apart from the odd matt for some par 3's.

Virtually every course in the UK will be in the same position and it is fine for us to log scores through the EGU app. The PCC even changed for 1 round on a non competition day.

I presume as long as you follow the rules and putt out, logging a score should be fine.

Keep in mind what the handicap system is --> a means of balancing (future) matches.

So the answer is virtually always "post it."

Really interesting replies.

Last year was my first season in the PNW and we were cart path only through June on some courses because we had so much rain.  So there was a lot of lift clean place and there were spots in the fairways where the mowers couldnt get.  We posted all competitive rounds once the GHIN allowed it as in season (which i think starts here in march).

Very few courses Ive played use mats or temporary teeing areas, which is also an interesting variable.

You need to refer to your local governing body/ local association.

in the northeast, we only post from April 1 —> November 15.

If you look at Rule 2b(ii) of the Rules of Handicapping, you'll read "Where a player follows the provisions set down in a Model Local Rule, even when the Committee in charge of the course has not adopted that Model Local Rule, the score may still be acceptable for handicap purposes"  So the answer to the OPs question is Maybe.  If you're in the posting season (March 1 to November 30 for Washington state), and you play using a Model Local Rule like E-3 for Preferred Lies (even if its not in effect that day), I'd suggest you generally should post that score unless your club's Committee tells you not to post.

Picking a nit here:  Washington state posting is from March 1 through November 15.  At least for now it is.

And just to be clear, I didnt start the thread to call anyone out. I was just curious how others approached this sort of thing.

I am comfortable with how and when i choose to post my scores.  I play in a regular weekend game at my club where we post all the scores each week when we are in season.  But I also play other tracks with buddies throughout the week (using the same rules we employ at the club) to practice my game and work on different shots I'm struggling with. I typically dont post those casual rounds because we're making weird bets and trying stupid shots for fun.  Thats my general rule of thumb.

I am fairly new to the PNW and it stays wet here much longer than it did back in the mid-west where i grew up. so we are playing improved lies longer into the season, so it just feels a little different to me.

I play at year-round courses, and I see opposite of not posting, gents post every time they play.  Just magically they judge wind and distance better during the money games.  Some participate in the shenanigans, some ignore it, and others play elsewhere for league play.  One of my best mates and a guy I play a lot of twighlight 9 hole with is really bothered by it.   I play another course where only league play scores count.

Welcome to GHIN!

Nobody's going to complain if you post low scores that are the result of things like Lift, Clean & Place or Preferred Lies. And yeah, winter will drive your index up a couple strokes but it'll effect everyone at the same time while rewarding those who actually played and kept their swing in shape. So that's fine in my mind.

What the system sucks at is defending against those folks who travel a lot to unfamiliar courses, post a bunch of 85's and return to their home course they've played 1,000x and shoot 74 (net 65) and win club events. There's not really any defense against that as far as I can tell.

The guys who are sandbagging aren't the one whose skill is 1-2 shots above/below their index based on the time of year but rather the ones who post 20 different scores at 20 different courses and yet can shoot 75 at their home course on a fairly regular basis.

Is that a firm maybe or a wishy-washy maybe?

I know, I'm answering a humorous response with a serious clarification.  The answer depends on the Committee's decision in the matter.  I'd suggest that's a firm Maybe, perhaps even a Definitive maybe.

Agreed, even naming and shaming them does nothing, everyone knows who they are. We had one guy get cut 8 shots on observation because he won every handicap match play and pairs event in one year. He is already half way back.
