Opinions on posting "combined " 9 hole scores ?

Something along those lines is how I read it. The actual algorithm is lots of “inside football” math.

It does not appear to me (from what I have read) that there is anything fancy going on. The USGA supplied example ( Treatment of 9-hole Scores - FAQs (usga.org) ) just took half of the player's index and added a stroke to come up with the differential on the missing 9 holes. I don't see anything indicating anything complicated here- it just is not fully described.

ps. But maybe the USGA/R&A have published something else that would contradict what I just said.

Thanks guys. So it's basically just a smoothing function such that any really good 9-hole round is only counted as ~50% as good compared to your index, and vice versa.

Effectively it will be almost roughly halfway between your index at the time of posting and whatever would result from doubling the 9 hole score.

Ping G25 10.5* w/ Diamana 'ahina 70 x5ct stiff (set -0.5 to 10*)

Sub70 Pro Tour 5w w/ Aldila NV NXT 85 stiff

Wishon EQ1-NX 4h, 5i-GW single-length built to 37.5" w/ Nippon Modus3 120 stiff

Sub70 286 52/10, 286 56/12, and JB 60/6 wedges, black, built to 36.75" w/ Nippon Modus3 120 stiff

Sub70 Sycamore Mallet putter @ 36.5" with Winn midsize pistol grip

I stand corrected.

In the pdf it read like the expected score would be based off of how you are playing that day. Why else would they need hole by hole if they were just going to combine a net par differential to what you actually shot? Weird.

“The calculation of an expected score is automated and is used to attribute a statistical value against any hole or holes not played within an acceptable 9- hole or 18-hole round so that a 9-hole or 18-hole Score Differential can be calculated, subject to other provisions set out within the Rules of Handicapping.

The procedure for calculating a Score Differential using an expected score can be summarized as follows:

1. An expected Score Differential for the hole or holes not played is calculated, based on a given Handicap Index and a course of standard difficulty.

2. A Score Differential for the holes played is calculated using the player’s actual scores and the rating value of the holes played.

3. The Score Differential from the holes played is combined with the expected Score Differential to produce either a 9-hole or 18-hole Score Differential.”

Based on the USGA FAQ you posted, I clearly read too much into it.

I guess they could have just made the “expected score” for the back 9, “net par +1”. Would have been way simpler to understand and isn’t based, at all, on how the player is playing that day.

Thanks for the FAQ link!

Which is what CONGU does just now. (Until April)

5.1b For a 9-hole Score
A 9-hole score is scaled up to an equivalent 18-hole Score Differential for immediate use in the scoring record.

* A 9-hole score is scaled up to an equivalent 18-hole Score Differential by adding net pars for the remaining holes plus one additional stroke (which is applied to the first hole not played), or 17 points in Stableford format (see Diagram 5.1b/1).
* The second 9 holes used for scaling up is always the same 9 holes that have been played.

A 9-hole score is scaled up to an equivalent 18-hole Score Differential as follows and rounded to the nearest tenth, with .5 rounded upwards:
Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope Rating) x (adjusted gross score – Course Rating – (0.5 x PCC adjustment))

Where:
* Slope Rating equals the 9-hole Slope Rating of the 9 holes played.
* Adjusted gross score equals the adjusted gross score for the 9 holes played, plus net pars for the second nine holes plus one additional stroke. It is calculated using the 18-hole Course Handicap, based on the 9 holes played.

* Course Rating equals the Course Rating of the 9 holes played, doubled.
* 50% of the playing conditions calculation (PCC) for the day is applied.

I think its great the new rules. I play a 9 hole course, I play 90+ percent of my rounds 9 hole.  It should be judge but how I played that round!

I wonder what happens when you play the same 9 holes twice on the same day?

Unless there’s an 18 hole rating for, say, “Front/Front”, or an 18 hole rating at a 9-hole course, I imagine you’ll just post each 9 and end up with two 18-hole “rounds” that day.

That’s how I read it at least. I could be wrong.

Good question.  We played the front nine twice on Thursday because the back was closed for winterizing.  But I guess it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things whether the two are combined (as in the past) or generate two separate 18 hole scores as will be done.  Imo, it's not going to make a significant difference to an handicap index, ie, it's not a hill to die on (sorry, that's a bad term to use on Remembrance Day - God bless the veterans for our freedoms).
