Ping Hoofer vs Hoofer Lite

Ready to buy a new Ping stand bag but I can't decide which one! I

Can anyone comment of the pros/cons of whatever they have? I also read reviews saying clubs are hard to get in and out...is this really true?

I own both but prefer the regular hoofer as the apparel pocket is larger and is overall better on storage space. I don't find club tangle to be a huge issue for me, but then again I mainly ride living in Myrtle Beach. When you take clubs in and out while the legs are deployed tangle can then become an issue.

I prefer the lite because I tend to walk and ride (50/50) and generally don't need a lot of storage space. To me, the lite has plenty of room for everything you need but not so much that you're going to load it down with unnecessary items.

As far as club tangle goes... I've never had much of an issue with it. Sometimes the club won't slide all the way down, but as soon as I pick up the bag to put it on my shoulder it drops in. I have regular size grips though and I could see it being a problem for mid size or large grips. Honestly, I feel like a lot of the people who complain about tangle expect their clubs to slide in and out of the bag like a hot knife through butter 🤣

I couldn't agree with this sentiment more. I walk 99% of my rounds, and swap between the Ping CEL and HL, and they're both great. I've never had an issue with club tangle, and I'd offer this as a counterpoint to anyone that does complain about it: If the grips are all touching one another in the bag, my clubs aren't moving a ton while I walk, which reduces club chatter. A pet peeve of mine since I was a junior golfer was hearing my clubs bang against each other while I walked, and I've never really had that issue with Ping.

Been using Ping bags for over 25 years, and I don't think I'll ever have a reason to switch. They're that good.

I think it depends on how much you are going to walk and carry. If you like to walk, get the Lite. If you are going push cart or ride, I'd get the Hoofer.

The Hoofer is definitely bigger and will be heavier.

I have a Hoofer and and Lite and prefer the Lite.

Depends on much room you want for gear.  I walk and I'm a minimalist and carry very little gear, and I like a slimmer looking bag.  So the Hoofer Lite checks those boxes for me.  The Hoofer is bloated looking to my eye and I have no need for so many pockets.  I don't even have stuff to put in all those pockets.  I carry 3 or 4 balls, a few extra tees, a water bottle, chap stick, a snack, and my phone/wallet/keys.  The Hoofer Lite has a great pocket setup for this approach.

I wish their was a bigger weight difference between the Hoofer and HL, but I use a HL anyways. The apparel pocket is big enough for my rain suit and rain gloves. It's got a water bottle pocket, plenty of space for balls, an extra glove, and a few other items (sunscreen, glove, sharpie, etc.). Most days I have a lot of unused pocket space as I don't carry a lot of things that I don't need / use.

I'm not really sure what I'd do with the extra space in the standard Hoofer - maybe keep an extra towel on a rainy day? If I were to try that now I don't think I'd be able to fit a towel AND rain suit in the apparel pocket at the same time. But it's very rare that I'm walking in the rain and wanting a spare towel.

It’s only .5 pound difference between hoofer and lite. You won’t be able to tell

I think it's less about weight and more about wanting the extra features and storage of the Hoofer.  Personally, I greatly prefer the Lite because I walk most rounds and the storage is the perfect amount.  I pack as light as possible so I don't need the extra pockets.  Looks wise, the Hoofer is a little bulkier and I prefer the more streamlined Lite.

even though they are only .5 pound difference if you get a hoofer over hoofer lite you are probably going to pack more stuff.

I'm just looking at the 23 new line and like the all black hoofer vs. the hoofer lite so I might be interested in going hoofer this time. Plus, probably more healthy for my shoulders to not carry and use a push cart. Hoofer fits better on a push cart vs. a hoofer lite and still only .5 pound difference. Hoofer lite likes to roll around.

I like the idea of the lite more than the regular, but how do those with the light like 1) the water bottle pocket that zips up vs the hoofers open one and 2) the zipped vs magnetic rangefinder pocket?

also, has anyone compared either to SM 3.5 or 4.5?

I prefer the Lite's water bottle pocket, but I carry a 16 or 20 oz disposable bottle, so it fits perfectly.  I use a GPS device that fits in my pocket so no comment on the zippered pocket (I use that pocket for my tees, balls, divot tool).

As far as Sun Mountain 3.5 vs Hoofer Lite-  I much prefer the Hoofer Lite, but I could see why someone else would prefer the Sun Mtn.  You really have to try both.  As a walker, the Hoofer Lite can't be beat for how it sits on the shoulders.  It's literally perfect in that regard.

For those that are concerned with the water bottle storage of a HL, it can fit my 40oz insulated water bottle just fine.

I have a the Hoofer and only have one complaint…the 5 way top. Club tangle has never bothered me but space across the top makes me nuts. I put driver and putter in top left slot and my standard blade putter cover basically fills it up and I struggle getting the driver in/out. Does anyone else have this issue?

My Yeti insulated bottle fits in the bottle pocket without issue. For the rangefinder pocket, I actually attached a Stripebird metal landing pad in the space between the stand legs and it's worked great for keeping my rangefinder in reach.

Admittedly, I haven't tried the regular Hoofer, but as far as my Lite goes...

1) My 20 oz water bottle fits just fine in the pocket.

2) Honestly I usually just leave the rangefinder pocket unzipped for easier access. It's pretty deep and my rangefinder has never fallen out of it (knock on wood).

Leaving the water bottle pocket unzipped works fine, though I agree it seems inelegant.  I leave the rangefinder pocket unzipped or zipped a little bit.  Rangefinder sits nice and deep in there.

I also leave the rangefinder pocket unzipped during the round and then zip it up at the end of the round.

I like the magnetic pocket on the Hoofer better, but the overall size of the Hoofer Lite is better for me.

I don’t know how you all carry those massive water bottles. I walk and carry constantly. I use a Poland Spring bottle and refill it. Too much water adds tons of weight.

gas this feedback changed with the new 2023 bags?

I can’t get over the minimal .5 lbs difference. When things like the magnetic range finder pocket are a big deal. I can’t keep opening and closing a zipper pocket when walking.
