The NFL Playoffs Contest 2023-2024 

 

Please make sure you understand the format and the point system. Please also bookmark this post so you have it handy all Playoffs long to refer to when you have to submit your total points for the week. 

 

How it works.

 

Each player gets two Double It Please (DIP) plays to start. DIP's are totally optional. They can be used only during the first two weeks of the Playoffs. That is the Wild Card Weekend and the Divisional round weekend. You can use your DIP plays once each week during the first two weeks. Again this play is optional. 

 

Week 1 - Wildcard Weekend 

Pick either a side or an O/U in all the games. A DIP Play is allowed. 

Each winning pick is worth 20 points.

A loss is 0 points. 

A Push is worth 5 points. 

If you DIP'd a play and it hits you win 40 points. If you lose your DIP play it is -20 points, and again if you Push it is worth 5 points 

 

Week 2 - Divisional Round 

Pick a side AND an O/U in all the games. A DIP Play is allowed.

Each winning pick is worth 15 points. A loss is 0 points. A push is 5.

If you hit a DIP it is 30 points won. If you lose it's -15 points. A push is 5. 

 

* The Double It Play (always optional) at this point in the contest is now over. There is no DIP play involved during the final two weeks. 

 

Week 3 - Conference Championship Games

Pick a side AND an O/U in both games. 

A winning Pick is worth 10 points 

0 for a losing Pick.

A Push is worth 5 Points 

 

Week 4 - Super Bowl

Pick both the side and an O/U in the game. 

Each winning Pick is worth 25 points.

0 points for a losing Pick, and 5 for a Push. 

Submit a Total Points Scored in the game in the case we need a tiebreaker.

Sounds like you play with the same group I do. Drinks poured on #2 box to avoid the started on #1. Time of the day doesn’t matter, nor does the weather, although we may have a temperature appropriate beverage during the winter.

More power to you all making picks on the Bowl games.  With what I perceive to be the increasing number of opt outs, I've reached the point where I don't watch any Bowl games unless they involve Syracuse, Cal, San Jose State, or Hawaii.  Also, I'm grumpy because I've been off work all week and I've caught up on all the streaming shows I had been putting off watching and now I'm contemplating watching "Alchemy of Souls", this time, without subtitles even though I don't understand Korean.

... I try and record every game but pretty much just watch the QB's. If one side has a stud and the other a dud, I just fast forward through the dud. And for this purpose anyone that isn't exceptional is a dud. I would never have discovered Avery Johnson without my method and was treated to one of the best young QB's I have ever watched play.

... I have noticed an increase in trash talk/confrontations with players going right through other players trying to stop them, coaches and sometimes the Refs. I would think if a Ref tries to separate players and one of them pushes back, it should be a flag and a possible ejection. I saw one Ref knocked down but no flag. I may be old school yet understand the modern game is about trash talkin' 🙄 but the physical confrontations just cross the line. I just think they should keep who is toughest between the whistles.

Exactly why gambling on NFL games is a total crapshoot. 2 of the highest scoring offenses going against a couple of mid-tier defenses. You’d expect a high scoring game and the oddsmakers pegged it as such with an O/U in the 50s.

 

I couldn’t figure out if DET’s DL was really that good or DAL’s OL was really that bad. Cowboys couldn’t run the ball at all. Cowboys’ DL has been bad for 2+ years. 1st round pick Mazzi Smith isn’t looking good and is only playing because of an injury to Jonathan Hankins. A DL going high in the draft needs to contribute in his rookie year. Smith has been getting overpowered since training camp, so the bust warning has been issued.

 

Which sums up my feelings on Jerry Jones as GM. He’s enamored with stars at the skill positions, often overpaying on the 2nd contract, but can never assemble a complete OL or DL - maybe a piece here and there. The Lions look like they’re built to stay, with fantastic lines on both D and O. Goff is a serviceable, above average QB. I’m still unsure about Dan Campbell, though. Love the guy, but he makes some questionable decisions. But I’d take him over McCarthy.

 

Dallas, in an annual tradition, will complete the season with an early exit in the playoffs. Might even come in the Wild Card round if Baker keeps playing well.

... I think Goff is another version of You Like That. He can light it up during the season but the Big Stage and the Playoffs always seem to big for them. And when the game comes down to a Ref saying, after video showed 68 reporting "70 reported, not 68" when Campbell told them before the game 68 would be reporting when they send 3 lineman over to the Ref so the defense isn't sure who is eligible, you have a HUGE problem. It's bad enough when the Refs change the outcome with/without a questionable call but when they mess up simple reporting they should be fired and the NFL should reverse the outcome. Never gonna happen of course buy da-yum that was brutal.

You might recall that I'm the only picker in our contest with Dallas in the Super Bowl.  My pick was strictly a contrarian choice and not because I respect, like, or believe in them Boys.  Year after year they are pretenders but never contenders and it looks as if they will disappoint their rabid (and delusional) fanbase once again this season.  But I took them because no one else did, it cost no money, and this is all just for bragging rights.

A friend of mine said between the call and the explanations, it only leaves two possibilities:  1)that ref is extremely incompetent, or 2)is on the take.  ("The league wanted a Dallas win" would likely fall under #2, but I guess a third category could be listed for it being rigged.)

Definitely a bad call. It’s also happened a million times before and bad calls that impact the outcome will happen again. I heard on ESPN this morning that the ref tells the defense who reports as eligible. Who knows how that might have altered how it played out since the defense was told #70 reported as eligible and not #68. Since the Lions got to run a play from the exact same place (after offsides on Dallas), basically a “do-over”, it played out as fairly as possible, given the bad call. To your point about Goff, had he placed the ball better, they would have converted on the last attempt.

 

As far as firing goes, based on the full body of work by that crew, I’d agree wholeheartedly. Same crew that didn’t call PI on Green Bay against Kansas City. Saw several other horrible non-calls by that same crew on pregame shows. 
 

The worst part is that a loss wouldn’t have hurt Dallas at all. Philly won’t lose the last 2 games and that’s what it would take for Dallas to win the division. And they can’t finish any worse than the top wild card team. OTH, the Lions would be the #2 seed if they had won their last 2 games, with an outside shot at the #1 seed. They’ll now be the #3 seed, which means a road trip in the divisional round instead of a home game. Big difference, especially for a dome team.
