3 Iron, 2 hybrid, or 5 wood??

Recommended Posts

For starters, I am a relatively new golfer but I have been playing almost every day this summer and im improving durastically

I have had all these in the bag at some point, so assume I can hit them all similarly.

Current Bag

Irons:

4-P  Taylormade Supersteel (1999)

Wedges

50 degree Taylormade Speedblade

54 degree Taylormade MG3

58 degree Taylormade MG2

Putter
Oddessy 2 ball

Driver/woods

Callaway Rogue Driver

3 wood Taylormade Supersteel (1999)

Currently I only have 13 clubs in the bag, I want to know what you guys think I should add.

Options are Callaway Heavenwood 2h  Supersteel 5 wood, or a Supersteel 3 iron. Thanks for the help.

That's a tough question to answer.  Some players prefer fairway woods.  Some hit hybrids better.   A very small number hit long irons better.

IMO, I'd consider a hybrid or fairway wood. Even with old school lofts, 3-irons are harder to hit consistently.

Definitely tough to answer without some information on your preferences, but it sounds like you have the ability to test these out. I would recommend trying both the 5 wood and 2 hybrid. Keep track of which one you hit better shots with more often, which has a more reliable shot pattern, etc.

Me personally, I have had good success (for my skill level) with the 2 hybrid in the spot you're asking about.

In my mind a 2H is 3W competition.  At most I'd consider a 3H, more likely a 4H.

I suppose I have 2 clubs in the gap you are looking to fill.  I get by without a lob wedge to make room at the top of the bag.

I have a 3 metal/2 hybrid setup and the 3 metal goes 15-20 yards farther.  3 metal has a longer shaft and slightly less loft so it makes sense that it's longer.

Consider a 7 wood. To me, easier to hit than a 2 or 3 hybrid, but goes higher but I get similar distance.

Try a 4H. Good middle distance gapper between 3W and 4i, and easy to hit.

Note - 2H is extremely hard to hit for most players: low loft means high clubhead speed needed to launch it consistently.

Get the 3 iron and a 7 wood which will both have about the same loft but different lengths and will serve different purposes.  Drop the 58 degree wedge and either get a 55/56 degree sand wedge or bend your 54 weaker if it has enough bounce.

I will take the risk of seeming to be a jerk (“Seems, madam? Nay, it is. I know not seems.”) and give you a warning to go with my advice based on my several decades of playing golf and watching people play golf: avoid grooving a loft adding swing in which you hit up on the ball.   This is particularly tempting with the long irons like the 3 I just recommended you get.  Learning early to get the ball in the air by hitting down on it with an iron is in the long run still (IMO at least) the path to more satisfaction and less frustration.  So, get the 3 iron and learn to use it properly.  You will be glad you did.

Of those choices I would pick the SS 5 wood.

I would probably eliminate the 3 wood and just go with Driver, then 5 wood, followed by a 23*-24* hybrid.

Driver--Callaway Rogue ST Max w/ProjectX Cypher Black

FW-4/7 woods--Callaway Paradym

Irons 4-5--Callaway Apex

Irons 6-PW--Callaway RazrX w/steel Uniflex-- shafts

F2 Series Gap Wedge 52* degree

SW-Cleveland CBX 56*

Putter--Odyssey White Steel

Ball-Srixon or Bridgestone E6

There isn't a lot of difference between a 5W and a 2 Hybrid in my experience. While the 5-Wood is higher in loft, the ball comes hotter off the face. I replaced my 5 wood some years ago with a 2-hybrid and it is consistently in the same neighborhood.

It comes down in that case to which clubs works more successfully for you between the wood and the hybrid. Some folks benefit from the added loft of the 5-Wood, whilst others get a bump from the different face shape and forgiveness of the hybrid over the wood.

Yet, I don't think you can go wrong with either the 5W or 2H; it's up to which one you're more consistent with IMHO.
