Upgrading from Mizuno MP-64 irons

Hi

I returned to golf in November 2021 after a decade or so out of the game. I had a goal to get down to a 5 handicap which I achieved last year. I'm now looking to upgrade the irons I bought 10 years or so ago to a current set.

I love my 64s, but realise its probably time to move on from them. For those that have played these irons or similar Mizzys what are your recommendations for current irons that have similar feel? Doesn't have to be Mizuno.

Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

mp64 was a good iron but I understand the desire to try something new after all these years. Mizuno doesn't really make a mp64 type iron anymore. They have the mp223 which is a bit bigger and uses chromoly metal in the 3-6 (maybe 7 too?) irons for thin faces and extra distance. Feel would be different as a result as the face is thin and chomoly is a harder metal which is needed for thin face tech.

Mizuno JPX tour is a good iron, all forged body for typically mizuno feel. Would have a slightly bigger footprint than the mp64.

Other than that, you could look at the new MC iron by taylormade, all forged and feel good. Would be comparable to mp64.

I'm sure you know about titleist t100, is the ap2 for titleist.

MP64 was one of the all time classic Mizuno models.  If it’s the feel you’re looking to keep, I wouldn’t stray from Mizuno.  Look at the 923 Tour, they will play very similarly the MP64.

I was a big fan of the 64’s as well.  Outstanding irons.  You could even go with 921 tour to save a little cash.  The 921 tours remind me a lot of how the 64’s went through the turf.  So smooth!

I had 3-PW of mp60s and replaced them with 4-GW of jpx 921 forged irons. I love the forged but don’t like the 40-45-50 gapping from 9-GW. I play the 921 down to 8 iron (35 degrees) then stick with the mp60s 8-PW (39, 43,47) for perfect gapping without bending.

if you go with something like the tour throughout the bag you won’t have any issue. Jumping up even to the forged for some extra oomph in the long end may take some getting used to with the short clubs… just make sure you get your gapping right.

Yeah any version of JPX tours, otherwise you are venturing into a different type of club with hotter faces and stronger lofts and it will be a difficult adjustment

Dare I say just play the 64s? They are so classic and it’s very possible you go through several years of tinkering just to return to old faithful

I went from years of MP4s to 223s a year ago and while I love the extra forgiveness, the hot long irons I am starting to regret. I’d rather be short and straight (like I’d get with a fully forged club) than pin high or long and 10 yards offline.

Take a look at the Titleist 620cb. Not quite the feel of the 64s, but close - the best feeling Titleist I’ve hit. Nice shape and profile and a great sole grind. As good as I’ve hit if we are talking about a traditional forged players CB.

I’m also a big fan of the Srixon ZX7s, but they are a fair amount larger than the 64s. If you don’t mind a bit thicker sole and topline, though, they are amazing irons and will give you some added distance in comparison to the 64s.

Issue for me with the 64s is I've hit a lot of golf balls with them to get my handicap down, they are showing wear and tear so they'll have to semi-moth-balled at some stage.

Tom Kite played the same set on Tour for 12 years, so he is one guy who does not believe irons or wedges 'wear out".

I think the MP223 gets a bad wrap from some on here.

Feel great, perform great.

+1. If you want something similar to the MP64 in the short irons and very nice with a bit of tech in the mid and long irons to cover up mishits, I would at least demo the MP223.

If you want forged all the way the JPX Tour lineup is great. Beautiful irons, but I believe the 223 long irons are easier to play.

And if you want some long and mid irons that are even easier to hit, have a very nice Maltby MPF rating, look good and feel good, I give you the often-overlooked MP18 MMC Fli Hi. Only issue is that head only comes in 3-6 iron, so you have to combo it, but it is compacr so it combos with almost anything. The best Fli Hi they’ve made for my money.

So it depends on whether you want something just like the MP64 or a blend of that design and more tech in the long game.

I agree on the 223’s as well.  They look and feel pretty great!  Prob more similar look at address than JPX.

Fair enough, however Tom Kite has the luxury of playing/practicing on premium ground, I don't as the place I hit golf balls doubles as a flood plain. There are a lot of loose pebbles in the soil you can't see when you are hitting where I practice, I'm also a bit of a digger as an iron player. My 6 iron has a rust spot on its face and the other irons have various notches and dents in them (mostly in the sole of the club), one of which is on my 7 iron and is also rusting. This place I practice is an awesome area otherwise, and there's nothing else really around where I can go to to "range", so I'm prepared to turnover clubs rather than not practice on turf at all.

Played MP64s for almost a decade, still love them.  I switched to MP 223s when they were released after testing a bunch of irons from across the spectrum. Will admit I have always played Mizuno irons so I was hoping to stick with Mizzys but the 223s were fantastic and made the decision relatively easy.

Upgrade? I dont think there is an upgrade available. You can go for different tech or newer graphics but an upgrade over an mp 64 is semantics. I played mp 62s then went for 921 tours, and now T100 and am happy.

But I dont think i upgraded, just different.

Maybe you need a groove sharpener.

In any case i suggest if you decide on change hit whatever in the dirt.
