Steelfiber versus Steelfiber Private Reserve

What is the difference between the original Steelfiber and the Steelfiber Private Reserve iron shafts?  I play the originals and am being fit at PXG on Friday and I believe they offer both.  Thanks!

Private reserve is the same as the standard Steelfiber, but with tighter tolerances and a different color.  Think of it like the Dynamic Gold Tour Issue versus standard Dynamic Gold.

Private Reserve also has hints of oak and stone fruit with a better overall mouthfeel. 🍷

It's weird because all the stats say they're the same just with "tighter tolerances," but when I tested them both they felt different to me. The PR ones went a little higher, too. I did not want to pay the extra $ and I figured everyone would make cracks about these on forums and such, but ultimately I figured if I was dropping a chunk of cash on fitted irons, I'd go with what I liked best and what worked best.

 

Hit them both and you can decide. Hopefully you won't notice any difference and can save a little cash.

So they can charge way more money for the same product with different paint as opposed to a different sticker.  If money is no object, than go for it, but the SF are expensive enough....geeezzz!!

I was going to say the same thing... one's black and one's silver.  There's your difference

Yeah, that was my experience as someone who tested both shafts.

I agree that the Private Reserve is a lot better looking shaft especially with my PXG black finish 0311ST.

 

But the OG and PR are different enough that you can tell immediately if you hit it back to back.

I played SF i110cw S, for two years in 620 series irons.  Steelfiber are fine shafts.  IMO Private Reserve is for a slower SS, more spin, maybe a different type of swing.  Only available in .370 tip so see why PXG offers them.

Weird, Matt Kuchar plays them in the 110 in his Srixon zx7 MKii and those are obviously taper tips.

Kuchar has a unique swing, TT/Aerotech/SF more than likely custom-built his clubs to specs.  SF i110cw (constant weight) are .350, TT, and HIGH-MID bend point.  I played those for 2yrs in blades.

 

Truetemper says, i110 Private… is .370 with mid-low bend.  It's easy to shave parallel tips to meet .350 need but mid-low bend is unusual for tour level play.  But who knows.... 🙂

Like as some have said.  Private Reserve are parallel tip, not taper.

Private Reserve play softer than original and spin more. Tried both at PXG fitting at one point.

Pepper mention already, but its not that hard to taper a parallel shaft, for a skilled club builder.

 

Also possible Kuchar's clubheads were bored to parallel.

 

Or, TT created a special tapered set just for pro use.

 

All kinds of options.

Had i110 regular flex std sf, stiff i95 sf, i110 private felt loose and not as accurate. I didn't like them.

I've played SteelFiber regular and Private Reserve, and find the latter to be a noticeable upgrade....to the point of being good value for me.  I started playing a SF PR i70 wedge flex in an Apex TCB AW, which became a remarkably good club for 'full' shots and around the green.  Shot Scope data was unambiguous and the difference was materially noticeable.  An example: 14' proximity to the pin versus 17' - 18'.  Which putt would you want?  I've put it up against a couple sets of clubs, most recently Callaway Paradym irons with HZRDUS Gen 4 R shafts (age 68 years; index 7-8).  I replaced the Paradym PW with an Apex TCB PW and replaced the Paradym 7 iron shaft.  My second PW shot at the range hit the pin.  The first PW shot in my round (100 yards downhill) was 3 feet from the pin.  The Paradym 7 has better dispersion, and I think more distance; it certainly flies higher, so stops.  (So far, best guess is no loss of distance, perhaps a gain.) I don't have comparative Shot Scope data yet, but the Private Reserve is a clear upgrade.  It is real, i.e., the tighter tolerances translate into playability.  The dismissive comments here describing Private Reserve as a marketing grab are uniformed.

Don’t sleep on the Private Reserve Wedge shaft.  I play the i105’s, high spin/low launch shaft. Such a great wedge shaft.
