Did a home putting green help you on course?

I can't speak to use, but it is on my list for one reason. Everybody I have talked to said "get one." Just have other priorities right now.... projects... new golf clubs... lol

The whole idea of the practice at home putting surfaces is to learn how to judge speed relative to stroke and contact in a controlled environment with knowable variables. The at home practice is meant to improve the quality of your putting stroke and help you refine so that you make good quality contact.

Then, after that, it helps you learn how to add or subtract speed based on controlled variables. When then hitting the practice putting green before a round, you'll be better able to acclimate to the surface without having to refine the putting stroke at the same time.

At least, that's the theory. 😄

Moving into a new place and thinking about getting a 4x18 fiberbuilt green. Curious for anyone who has put in a home green, has it helped your game? Does work put it at home translate to the course well, or is it tough to replicate on course reps?

I have one of those perfect practice putting mats and find it helpful when working on mechanics (usually have a putting mirror or visio-style arc template) and it does translate to the course.  I don't put too much weight into speed or making the cup since it's a cheaper setup and I don't spend the time to get a true flat surface everytime.  I'd imagine a properly built quality setup would be even more beneficial.

Personally, I do like the ones with the narrow track and incline at the end.

Can you hit a straight putt?  If so, then probably don't need one.  I don't have my own home green, but a real one about 40 yards out the back door.  I can hit a putt straight, so it is all about reads after that.  I have not hit a bad putt on that green for many years since I know how they all break and stuff.

If your stroke is all over the place, then they can help a lot as long as you also mix in some real putting with reads and breaks and stuff.

I also have a simple putting mat at home (also a mirror), and it has been very helpful.  My mechanics can get off, and there is nothing better than just working on this over 4-8 foot putts.   Builds confidence on the short putts on the course for sure, at least for me.

I actually bought a house once that the previous owner had built a small putting green in the back yard, but it was poorly done, and not hardly worth it, didn't use it much at all really.

Puttout matt and the Puttout pressure putt trainer at home.  I'll use it to just practice 6 footers over and over again just to refine my stroke to make sure I'm starting the ball on line.  That's all I'm interested in at home.  When I go to a real putting green, I'll still focus a lot on 6' and in, but work in some speed control with flat, uphill, and downhill putts.

If you can build it with 2% slope then it'll help you. Get a putting mat for straight putts but put slope on your outside green.

They are great for dialing in alignment and weight/feel of a putter. That's about it. I will say though, if you have something outside you can chip with other than an indoor putting mat, that's a game changer. Being able to hit chips around a green is crucial.

I use mine when working on alignment and tinkering with weights. Other than that, it's my local putting green I can putt and chip around.

The more time you can spend on grass the better, obviously. But I think putting anything is better than nothing. My wife and I have been talking about a little putting green when we get to our “last” house. I can’t think of anything more fun than a bottle of wine, some tunes, and us talking smack to each other on a little night time putting green. It won’t be fancy, just a little slab and outdoor carpet.

It helps me when my mechanics or setup feel like they are out of whack.

Hard to say.  I blame it for some of my Putting woes sometimes. Just because  it’s all too tempting to rake and whack balls …. And that feeds the “ you suck “ self talk when you aren’t making any.   As in I’ve stood for an hour on my own green and not made anything over 5 feet during slumps.  And that isn’t good for the mental game.  You have to be smart enough to either walk away or move in close and work on setup in these times.  Missing 20-50 putts in a row isn’t a great mental image.  I didn’t have this before because I didn’t practice as much.  So a double edged sword.

But that being said , it is good for grinding on start line. Straight 5 footers .

it’s more something to do in the evening.

I think a putting mat, mirror, and gates would do you just as much good and be cheaper/take up less space.

Those have their function.

However, you need to take the functional development of those aids and then putt on slope without them or use the mirror on putts with slope.

A putting mat is great to rep a straight putt over and over. And there is huge benefit to seeing yhe ball roll end over end. But hardly any putt on course is straight. A putting green with slope is a perfect complement to aids and a flat mat.

I don't have one, flirting with the idea of one.

Close friend has one and uses it 2-3x a week that he says its more for "something to do".

Guess it scratches the itch a bit.

This ... I got a 14 x 6 Birdie Ball Green ... It was kinda fun, but it didn't improve my putting. Gave it to my church and we have it the sports closet.
