Tops For Skinny Dudes.

Hey All, 

I'm a cyclist with a proper Euro cyclist build (think T-Rex) and also on the taller side. 6'2" 165lbs. I'm having the hardest time finding polos and quarter zips that fit The closest I have gotten is Lulu polos, and from my eye, they still float on me. The biggest issue is the chest, I unfortunately don't have big broad American shoulders, so I don't fill out most tops in the upper which leads to even worse floainess in the bottom of the shirt because I can't fill that either. 

 

Does anyone have any leads on performance brands that fit tall and skinny? Would be looking for a true slim fit. If I size down for a slimmer fit, the issue usually becomes length.

I have the same issue, just not tall.

 

I haven’t been able to find polos, still wearing my Nike Aeroreact slim fits I stocked up on.

 

1/4 zips, have recently picked up 4 from Macade Golf, they are fantastic, actual slim fit, with great stretch.

 

The Tour 1/4 and the tech bomber 1/4.

G-Fore has the skinniest shirts that I've seen. I have a standard G-Fore shirt size L that is skinnier / more tailored than than a Peter Millar M Tailored Fit shirt that I own (and the g-fore L is way more tailored than a standard fitting PM size M shirt).

Try Lacoste, very trim fit.

Footjoy in a size small would probably work well. I’ve put on a few recently, but I’ve been a similar height and weight as you for quite a while and the FJ smalls were a solid fit. Long enough to tuck in and a good fit. 
 

Holderness and Bourne in a size medium would also be worth a strong look. Mediums are fitted but again long enough to tuck.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I also randomly came across Callaway's slim fit line. May try that soon. They had polo's and 1/4 zips.

Also check out J Lindeberg, they have slim fits cuts as well.

Picked up a few Galvin Green polos earlier this season and they fit nicely.

Ladies clothes are one size smaller than men's.  Thus, a men's size XS is a women's small.  Not only that, but women's clothes come in smaller sizes, which means you can actually find a size XS that is almost non-existent in men's sizes.  Thus, if you can only find men's medium, you may be able to go down three sizes with women's clothes!  Petite sizes are for shorter women.

 

Women typically don't have broad chests, so it is likely you can find a women's size that will fit your body shape.  JoFit sells clothes for a variety of different body shapes.

 

Most women are rectangular in shape, particularly when they are thin.  It isn't that hard to find women's tops that can fit narrow shoulders.

Colors are all over the map.  Some brands have boring neutral colors that will work well for either gender.

eBay can be useful for hunting down clothes that fit.  Sellers will provide measurements that the manufacturers fail to provide anywhere on their web site.

 

Buttons are reversed or mirror imaged on women's clothes.  But as far as I know zippers are identical for men and women.

I can kind of relate.  However I'm short, small waist but broader shoulders/chest from lifting, and having clothes fit well was always a problem for both shirts and pants (smaller waists have smaller leg openings so they’re normally too tight around the thighs, which I'm guessing you can relate as a cyclist)...

 

DIY tailoring with a sewing machine is something I wish I considered earlier, but such a game changer the past several years.  For shirts (polos, dress shirts, whatever), sewing the side seams inward however you want is a relatively easy thing, and gets rid of the unwanted slop.  Lots of youtube tutorials or sites like this:

Darting pants waists smaller (thigh-fitting pants with too big of a waist) is something I've done to almost all my pants and shorts.

Nice! The good thing is it can be undone with a seam ripper if you mess up (no cutting off excess with scissors unless you're happy with the fit).  In a pants thread I posted a yt vid by a guy who seems pretty helpful with this kind of stuff...

 

Adding that in the past I would always try to find decent "fitted" or "slim fit" dress shirts and polos, but even then they'd blouse like muffin tops when tucked, no matter how you tuck.  Now no need to find any specific brand, or someone's recommendation, just alter anything myself into something that actually fits well.  Alternately you could find a tailor to do the same, if you'd rather not DIY.

I am not on this forum very often but I had this issue as well with my frame. YOU must try FJ Athletic fit shirts....it is the only shirt I wear now...the Athletic fit Large fits me perfect and I am 6'2" 180

If you are going to do it yourself be aware that thin stretchy fabrics are more challenging, like hitting a lob wedge.

I have a Bernette overlock machine for T shirt hems.

I have found 36 degrees polos to be quite slim, particularly in the chest and quite durable for their price. Might be worth a look

Everything is worth a look. I may even buy a few and return as necessary if I don't go all in on becoming my own tailor. lol.

Oooh overlock stitch, that's advanced level 👍.

Just a normal zigzag with polyester thread works fine for me on stretchy clothes (and straight for non stretch).  And yes, definitely have to practice to get the feel of stitching stretchy things, not pulling/pushing too hard.  Short game finesse is a good analogy.  IMO not all too difficult to get the hang of and well worth the DIY effort.

For under 10 bucks they are definitely worth a try. I was surprised by the quality for the price and love the lightweight stretch of their polos
