I played in a scramble once and we were playing 8-somes, 2 4 man teams playing each hole for those unawares, and this guy on the other team when he would get to the top of the swing, drops the club behind him so the shaft mirrored his spine. Hit it surprisingly well.

Yesterday I played with my normal foursome and with 3 holes left to play I said this is like a clown show today. All 4 of us had off days at the same time and it was comical. There are all kinds of clowns on the course.

Years ago I lived down in Oklahoma. Being in the Marine reserves, I got a membership at the golf club at the local Army base.

 

One spring I got asked to play in the annual Military-Civilian Appreciation Day tournament. My makeshift group consisted of me, a retired Army master sergeant, and two guys from the local Chamber of Commerce.

 

Right away, I could tell the chamber guys either didn't know the rules of golf, or were blatant cheaters. Third hole, one of the Chamber guys finds his tee shot three feet OB. He kicks it back in bounds, and hits a lucky shot into the green, sinks the putt, and cards a birdie for the team.

 

Fouth hole, the other Chamber guy quietly takes a mulligan out of the greenside bunker.

 

I ask the retired master sergeant if he sees what's going on, and he says, "Hey, I'm new to the game." More odd re-do shots take place.

 

We get to the ninth hole, and the Chamber guys decide they don't want to play anymore and give me the scorecard. The retiree is headed for his car already.

 

I explain the situation to the scorer, and he tells me to "stand by." He puts me with a later starting group - we don't win, but we played by the rules.

You never know who or what you are going to get paired up with. Last fall I was paired up with a guy in his late 50s and he had plenty of speed in his swing but he hit driver everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Even on the 132 yard par 3. He proceeds to “bunt” driver over the green and ultimately save a bogey.

Some people go to the course to play golf, some go to hit golf balls. Even the golfers are actually golfing just a tiny fraction of the time they are on the course, the rest of the time is spent going to their ball, enjoying the day, and chuckling at the guys they got paired with by the starter.

 

I'd mention one time if someone was walking in my line, any worry after that would just throw other parts of my game out of whack.
