TSR 3 fairway vs Ai smoke

Recommended Posts

I know the TSR 3 has been out for a while and it seems to be the gold standard for a fairway wood in looks and design, has anyone been able to hit both the new Callaway and the Titleist for comparison purposes.

I am curious if the new tech in the Callaway would outshine the classic design of the TSR3 performance wise loft for loft.

Callaway Smoke Max 10.5 GD AD VF 6s

Titleist TSR 2 16.5 GD AD UB 7s

Titleist TSR 2 21 GD AD DI 8x

Callaway APEX CB  5-11 Steelfiber i95 r

Chikara 54* Steelfiber 110 s

Chikara 58* Steelfiber 110 s

Not the ai smoke, but I have hit the tsr3 many times and had the standard paradym 3hl for a few months..have paradym triple diamond now.

The paradym launches a bit higher. They both spin about the same. I play a fade and found the paradym wants to rotate closed more frequently than I liked. In all the times hitting the tsr3, I didn't see issues with balls falling left.

Thr paradym (and ai smoke) are very shallow faced. That could present challenges. The tsr3 isn't deep, but it isn't shallow either.

Now, paradym triple diamond beats them both.

Starting in the Rogue st line, callaway shifted to "batwing" technology in the fairways. That shift of weight to the extreme heel/toe added stability to the low spin/tour fairways. Anyone who played the og m1 3w with those weights spilt can attest.

That batwing tech stayed with the paradym. But callaway doesn't call it out in their product info on their website for the ai smoke fairways. So they may have done something else.

But that batwing tech certainly provided stability in the Rogue st and paradym heads.

Maybe. I'm getting cynical because I keep buying new gear and my scores never improve :).

I do think its critical to be fit into the right type of equipment (loft, COG, size/forgiveness, shaft obviously, etc.). And I do think that sometimes there is a dud of a product. Even the best companies like Callaway/TM/t**/Ping sometimes produce a club that is hard to hit/unforgiving, etc but I think you can often go back even further and if you are well fit into a good product there isn't much of a difference. It'd be interesting to see something like a well fit 2018-19 Epic Flash 3W vs a well fit 2023 AI Smoke.

I played the TSi2 fairway and had outstanding results with it, tried the TSi3 and it was good, but just didn't quite fit. Demoed the TSR3 at the beginning of the year. Felt like I was getting great speed, slightly higher launch than the TSi3, and just as good forgiveness as the TSi2. Add in the sliding weight adjustability for hit location and it went in the bag, no question. I like Callaway clubs, but I prefer with my lie angle set up, I would need the green dot adapter.

Not sure that it matters, but I like that the Titleist fairways are all metal construction for the heads. Not that I abuse my fairway woods, but I do hit them off the fairway quite a bit and part of me is worried about carbon heads having issues. Had a Mavrik 3 wood when they came out a while back, the epoxy came loose on the inside after about 2-3 months. Callaway was amazing in immediately sending out a replacement club. Best customer service from a golf club manufacturer imo.

So true. Very noticeable in the Rogue ST line, which are great fairways, even if they aren’t adjustable. The 16.5 degree head is a weapon. But of these two brands, I can almost go either way.

I find Titleist fairways to be beautiful and have played great with them. I like the shapes for the most part. But overall I have found Callaways a little easier to hit and the Rogue ST does feel very stable. I also like their typical Cally low profile off turf. I do still love my Titleist TSi2 7 wood with HZRDUS Black shaft. High confidence. That’s just a perfect 7 wood.

Just ordered smoke AI max 3W with Denali 70S Black. Had Callaway at our club yesterday and swore I wouldn’t buy new equipment this year but after hitting it, couldn’t not order it. Purposely mishit off toe and heel and very forgiving. Coming from Stealth Plus I needed a bit more consistency as I seem to hit my current 3W far too high even with the CK Pro White 70S in it.

will know more once I get it on course. Loved the shallow profile too

Anyone test these out more recently? I have TSi3 15 deg playing 14.25 deg but looking to get a new 3 wood. Debating beween TSR3 13.5 deg head and an AI smoke TD 15 playing 14 deg. Really like the look of the AI smoke triple diamond even though I've always played Titleist. Anyone tested these recently that could compare spin between TSR3 and AI smoke td?

I couldn't get along with the TSR3, launched too low for me. Ping g430 lst was great, then I found the TD Smoke...and it's even easier to hit than the ping.

How is launch with the TD head in comparison to the Standard in HL?

I'm disappointed they don't offer the TD in HL.  I feel like the TD in standard will be a driver essentially

Well...

I had the paradym hl. At 16.5 it launches beautifully. But it spins a bit too much (3500ish) for me. So I turned it down to 15.5...spin came down, launch was still good. Love the shallow profile for off the deck shots. But it wanted to fall left too often.

Enter paradym TD. At 15, it launches low, spins around 2800-3000. Great tee club or club for long par 5s. BUT...when set to +1, it DOES NOT sit closed. It's like goldilocks...16 degrees is a perfect loft for me and my ventus black 3w shaft. It launches between 10 and 13 degrees off the deck and spins right at 3000.

Don't be afraid to loft up the TD...it still sits square.
