To Walk or Ride? California Golf Trip

Recommended Posts

Planning a golf trip for early May in San Francisco/Pebble Beach. Trying to decide which courses to walk and which to ride. Will have a mixed age group, I am youngest at 34, but going with my father and some of his friends so some knocking on door of 70’s. Below is our itinerary and my thoughts:

  • Presidio Golf Course - Ride
  • TPC Harding Park - Walk
  • Half Moon Bay Ocean Course - Walk
  • Poppy HIlls - Ride
  • Pacific Grove - Ride (Playing Pebble Beach that afternoon for 2nd 18 so want to keep legs fresh)
  • Pebble Beach - Walk w/ Caddie
  • Spyglass HIll - Walk w/ Caddie
  • Pebble Beach - Walk w/ Caddie
  • Spanish Bay - Walk w/ Caddie

I prefer to walk while the older gentleman would probably prefer to ride. We live in WV so with the hilly terrain we primarily ride when we play. Thoughts?

I know it may not be much, but walk when you can, ride when you must.

Sounds like the above is a good plan if the others will walk with, or you have someone to walk with while they ride. I hate riding unless I have to. You lose the connection with the others.

So, you walk and let them ride?

Of those three, Spyglass is the toughest walk. If you can walk all three, then definitely do it. But if your 70's friends need a break, probably ride Spyglass.

Pacific Grove is an easy walk. Spyglass is usually cart path only, Pebble is always cart path only. Depending on weather, they will let you ride on Spanish Bay fairways.

Pacific Grove is a really short course and is easy to walk. I don’t think it would wear anyone out even playing it and another course in the same day.
Spyglass is tiring for some people; there are some long gradual slogs.
Pebble is  not bad.
I’ve only played Harding a couple times but I don’t recall seeing anyone walk it.

Don't pressure older golfers, walk alone and split the cart cost with the solo rider.

This group is very headstrong and outspoken. There will be no peer pressure lol.

Most of them walked 10 rounds in 9 days in Scotland with me last year. But those courses are mostly flat. With the exception of GlenEagles Kings Course, that was pretty hilly...

+1 on riding Spyglass.

You have a good idea to ride Presidio, very hilly in numerous spots on the course.

IMO after playing morning @Pac Grove you might want to make it a riding day that afternoon @Pebble (that place can be a soft slog, it'll wear your crew out on a 36 hole day). Take caddies out on that 2nd solo round @Pebble.
