Rusty Scotty, Too Far Gone?

Common sense tells me this thing is beyond bringing back, but out of curiosity figured I'd check with you resto guys. Someone locally has this Scotty for sale for dirt cheap obviously. I'm guessing it was submerged in the salty gulf waters from Hurricane Ian. Any chance it could be brought back to playable status or would you lose half the head just trying to clean it up?

That's kinda what I was thinking. Could be an all time before and after if it turned out even somewhat ok.

Knock the big rust off and make sure the face is flat and that might be the best you can do.

That can be brought back for sure. It'll be lighter as mentioned. Slap some lead tape on the bottom and you're good to go. I've seen worse restored by BOS and NorCal.

I remember, I gave a Scotty Catalina to a buddy.  A few years later I saw it and he had put it away wet and it had rust all over it and it was pitted.  I was pissed.

There's a Scotty DIY Facebook group. They'd probably get a kick out of that. Anything is savable. Just depends on price. Won't ever be original but could be a really cool custom.

I think the problem is the weight.  It's already light.  After rust removal it will be a featherweight.

I'd be all over that project if I had a chance at such. Clean it up, worst case lead tape!

Well the seller never replied to my messages and then marked it sold today, so I guess it's someone else's project. Thanks for all the fun commentary anyway. I was definitely headed over here for some DIY advice if I snagged it!

Yeah definitely give it a go, I'd do the car battery water electro thing to hit that rust.

Put it in some white vinegar overnight. That will take off any surface rust. From there it can be sanded. Definitely can be saved.
