Anybody Use a Bernhard Langer iron set up? My experience was great!

Recommended Posts

Is this a post the proves how much of a club 'Ho I am, or proves the theorem that clubs don't matter!  On the on the hand, you have a have a big garage of clubs to make a Langer set up, but on the other hand my experience proves that it's the swing not the clubs!

Here goes - I live in Vermont and don't have a reliable club person here, therefore, I send everything to the Chip Usher down in Georgia.  He's the best!

While I was waiting to get my usual T100 set up back from a loft/lie check I have been losing my mind over what to play out of my garage.  After struggling a few rounds, I took my favorite club from each back up set and went to the course.  All sets had either s300, s300 AMT or S400, so not too much difference.  My set looked like this:

PW - Vokey 46

9   -   620 MB

8   -   620 MB

7   -   P760

6   -   p770

5   -   p770

4   -   T100S

As an initial thought, it reminded me how you don't play all your clubs each round!  For 9 holes, I didn't require a shot with the PW, 7 or 5!  I used the 4 iron two times, the 6 iron twice, the 8 iron 3 times, and the 9 iron once!  Of course, I used my wedges and putter a ton!

My take away was that when stepping up to the ball I thought about making the best swing possible with the club in my hand, instead of thinking about the iron set.

Anyway, it was a fun look into the mental game that is golf.  Anyone else try this?

Great post @Judge Smails.  There have been times in the last 50-60 years where my bag looked more like it belonged at a yard sale or pawn shop than on the practice range at a mini-tour event or Monday qualifier.  Yet, I played some very good golf with a hodge-podge of clubs.  If you are comfortable with every stick in the sack, you are more inclined to think about the shot instead of the club.

Its just quite similar to a triple mix from say Srixon of zx7,5,4

Or Titleist Ap1,Ap2,Cb,Mb712 etc set

I thought he was using 6 different makes of iron and thats where i had to very  sadly stop taking him seriously.

Wish you well.

Yes and I have been wanting to start a thread on this for a while...call it crazy combos.  Here is mine:

5i -- ZXU MKII 4 bent to 24 degrees w/ tour ad di 85s

6i -- Z585 w/ steelfiber i80

7i -- Z585 w/ steelfiber i80

8i -- ZX7 OG w/ steelfiber i95

9i -- ZX7 OG w/ steelfiber i95

PW -- Zforged MKII w/ steelfiber i95 (1 degree strong-45)

Im hitting all my distances...may strengthen the 8 and 9 by a degree but working well as is.  Very pleased with the Zforged MKII PW. It looks and feels great, hits my numbers and nice spin too.  Also, the 585 might be the best feeling 5 series of them all.

Always wanted to put together a truly 'blended' set of irons, but obviously without a garage full of clubs or a really good fitter there's a lot of moving parts.

There’s a story possibly true about Booby Jones or some other great golfer from back in the day when people bought clubs individually.  This great golfer always complained about one particular club.  Long after he died his clubs were examined and it was found that that one club had a different swing weight.

A long winded way of saying if you are sensitive to swing weight putting together odd sets could be a problem or on the other hand you could unknowingly end up choosing your favorites from different sets because they all have the same swing weight.

There are all kinds of combo sets (up to 3 different clubs in one set from Callaway for instance), but the '1 of each club' thing was pretty unique to him. Theres no real reason to do it.

As in - you would have to REALLY go out of the way to put that together and get some sort of positive results, as opposed to vice-versa.

Loft is loft, and if you dont about what you're staring at and how different it looks each time you pull out a club then I guess have at it?

I'm not maybe quite as extreme on the irons, but I'm currently at 7 manufacturers for 14 clubs.  Or 8 if you count Vokey and Titleist separately.  Or 9 or 10 models if you count the different Srixons individually.  Almost as bad on shafts too haha.

Driver - Callaway (Aldila)
3w - Titleist (Mitsubishi)
3i - Adams (Matrix)
4-P - Srixon (3 different iron models, all KBS shafts)
Gap - Fourteen (Nippon)
Sand - Hogan (OG Hogan)
Lob - Vokey (TT DG)
Putter - Ping (? Ping I guess)

Love the Langer bags.  Much more interesting to see some non-conformity!

1 hour ago, Judge Smails said:

Nothing better than those old TM 300 Lehman grinds!

....you know, I had a set of those, the TL2MM Serials, 2-P, I hated them.

Absolutely hated them.

And, I wanted to love them. They looked great. Felt great. I couldn't do squat with those things. And, I tried, I gamed them in tournaments at least three times.

If I am remembering correctly, I believe I moved into the RAC Blades 2-P rather quickly.

The closest I personally will ever come to Lehman/Langer Status was back in 2018.

....And believe it or not, I broke my low round EVER shot, on two separate occasions less than a month apart, with this mix. I continued forward with it maybe 5 to 7-8 months before pieces began to shuffle.

Shot 69 in September 2018 and Won my 1st Individual Championship (21 years of trying).

....Shot 66 in October 2018 practice round; made 66 swings that day, and only 1 of them poor, a 3 footer, right to left, slightly down hill, with about 2 cups of break. Made a quick stroke, shorted it lowside by 1/2 a cup. Worst shot of the day. Outside that it was 65 perfectly executed shots. 12 pars, 5 birdies, and 1 bogey.

Haven't sniffed 66 since! ROFL!
