All depends on the conditions and my lie, I could use anything from a 52* to a 6 iron if I am uphill, downhill, with or against the wind.
Different scenario's require different shots.

Under perfect conditions, I would use a smooth 9 iron.

Most days, it would be a full 6 iron. If entry to the green was wide-open, and I was feeling a bit frisky, I could also pull out a 5 iron choke down and hit a 3/4 low shot.

For me it would be a six iron. My wood distances seem to be above average but my iron distance is not. I play for control with my irons but I tend to swing a little harder with my woods (swing speed with driver is 105+).

170y = 9 iron

 

Even with the last falls switch from a cavity back iron (Orlimar Tri-metal) to Ping S59 Tours. I have to hit the Ping's very crisp to hit the same distance though.

Just got new irons, so I'm not sure. There's only .25 degrees difference compared to my old set in the 7 & 8 irons, so I imagine it would be the same.

If I had just three-jacked, it would be an 8, but it would most often be a soft 7. I would almost always go with the club where I don't need to swing out of my shoes to get it there.
