OK, I know we all have our own opinions, but I am trying to reconcile dizzy dog saying Ocotillo is fantastic and fore_life saying don't bother. Anyone else with an Ocotillo opinion?

That's what I was thinking from the pictures and description. I realize I'm new to AZ, so at some point might like a change of pace from the desert, but for the most part, I'm in the desert, so I expect conditions to be like the desert. Kind of like looking at houses here - there were some with trees and bushes that looked like Ohio: why would I want that in AZ?

Ocotillo is a completely contrived unremarkable golf course with far better options in the same price range. I would never recommend anybody waste a day golfing there with other better options available in that neck of the woods (Southern Dunes, Whirlwind, etc.)

Yep.

I'll play it if it pops up for $15 in the summer or $30 in winter, but other than that, other places are better

Thanks for that Ocotillo take. I will probably sound like a golf course snob (and I may be one), but there is too little time and there are too many great courses to spend time and money on courses that aren't.

No offense to any of the other posters, but when reconciling opinions on wrx (this is exactly an opinion) lean heavily towards those who offer to assist you through PMs.

Jewofgolf, OPB and fore_life have all helped me in my search for south Phoenix golf.

Joselo: Play Aguila. It's a bargain at 3x the price.

Well.....A) the dizzydog comment was from 2008. and B) he called Toka Sticks and Painted Mountain and others as top notch courses. If I did not know I would simply say that was a troll comment. But I think it was just someone that does nto play much at better courses.

Ocotillo is just a plain course through a housing community with lots of water and nothing distinctive. It does have some good holes(primarily Blue and White 9s), that if built on a different property would be quite good additions. I consider Ocotillo a place to go play a round on decent conditions when I don't want to travel far or deal with desert. But you definitely don't come to AZ and put it on the to do list.

Ocotillo is as vanilla, cookie-cutter, soul-less course as you may find in the PHX area. In fact, playing it may just cost you a piece of your own soul. 27 holes, 23 of them with water hazards in play, each one as unremarkable and forgettable than the previous. Southern Californians will feel right at home playing this Ted Robinson turd as he has littered that landscape with vast numbers of his unfortunate creations prior to dropping this one into the Arizona golf punchbowl.

Hey Tom....this would be a great list for you to make: Course Name, Course Designer and 1-2 word max TJY description. example: Ted Robinson turd

That would be one hell of a list!!!

I rather like the Wigwam Heritage course (aka the West course, aka the Red course), for a traditional parkland style. Tree-lined but not claustrophobic at all, very generous from the tee. Fun greens (stay below the hole!). Probably "short" by today's standards, but that doesn't affect my game. The Gold course is also parkland, but bigger and brawnier. Have not played it since it was remodeled a few years back.

Played Cholla at We Ko Pa this weekend.

It may be the kind of course that grows on you, but it's a very tough first time course.

Has to be five or six blind tee shots.

The yardage guide helps, but it's unexpected hitting a blind shot on a par five not knowing that you have to hit less than driver.

Course was in good shape, and we were *that* group and were kind of slow because a few of us were struggling.

If you hit a ball off line on a blind shot, it's very tough to find.

Anyway, I'm sure if you play it a few times it's fun, but I wouldn't recommend it for a one time deal, especially if your game isn't in shape.

If you play it, make sure you play the appropriate tees, that will help.

Number 2 and 8 the two par 5s on the front ruin that course for me. I've also learned better to hit driver on all the split fairway par 4s just hit it past everything. It took me about 6 rounds on it to start posting decent scores. Not a course you want to tip out unless you carry the ball 265+

Pace is always slow on that one because of the design

My buddy sent me a picture from the raven, the bunkers are totally mud. Not sure I'd want to put up with that for $50 haha

If you play Aguila again, here's some more info:
Replay is free to walk, or cart fee only to ride. Also, they have a fun par 3 course on site(you see it driving in next to the park) that is free to play with paid 18 hole green fee.

Papago is in solid shape and its between 44 and 41 bucks before noon, and they have a noon tee time hot deal for $15 with cart. That is a steal

Going to Scottsdale for a bachelor party in March. Was considering Troon North and We-ko-pa but wanted opinions on a 3rd course.

All NYers going for first time so no one has played desert style golf before...
