First is a picture of the wedges that i use as gamers. They are both Callaway X Forged with the raw "Vintage" finish. I cleaned them up first with some steel wool to get rid of some of the surface rust. I used Birchwood Casey Paste Gun Blue on the Callaway wedges. Birchwood Casey also has a Liquid Gun Blue which i used on a Cleveland 900 wedge. Both of these products are pretty easy to apply and do NOT require heating up the head of the club for them to work. When using either of these products I just use a Q tip to apply either the liquid or paste to the club, let it sit for 30 seconds to a minute and wipe the off the excess with a towel soaked with cold water.

In the second picture you can see the difference in using the liquid blue and the paste. The Callaway wedge on the right has had the Birchwood Casey paste applied. The Cleveland wedge on the left has been treated with the liquid blue. I prefer the looks of the paste over the liquid, but I thought that a side by side comparison would allow you to choose which you like better.

I was concerned that by putting the finish on the face of my wedges that it may take some spin off of my wedge shots, however it doesn't seem to have any negative effects on the spin. From my experience when using this product on wedges you can expect the finish to wear off of the sole and also on the face where it contacts the ball over time. I think I touched up the sole and face of my wedges one time during the last golf season. I have used this product on some putters too. When using this on a putter the finish seems to stay on very well and does keep a raw carbon putter from rusting as fast, especially if you wipe it down with a silicone cloth from time to time.

Nice Stu-co.....Yes, I bought mine off of ebay for $50 last year. I am sick, because back in '90 I won an Arnold Palmer original in the box with Arnie's autograph down the front face of the leather grip. I sold it a few years later for $75 and it was mint. Still kick myself over selling that.

I don't blame you Deerslayer... that would be one nice putter to own! What a loss!

Just blasted them with 150 grit beads, enough to rough the surface of the chrome, but not enough to remove it. It takes those bag dings and makes them much more unnoticeable.

That's amazing... they don't even look like chrome anymore. It really gives them a raw look!

looking to do a putter myself and reading through this thread no one answered the question on the rife. does torching the rifes mess with the roll groove technology. did you guys see a loss in the putters ability to generate forward roll?
I can't answer this for sure, but it depends on what the insert and liner are made of. I've never owned a Rife or really taken a close look at them but I found this on their website.

"Rife's new Dual Response Insert technology allows the Two Bar Hybrid putter to have even more gripping effect because the CNC millied grooves grip the ball and the polymer backing absorbs the hit, allowing for slightly more dwell time. This creates even more control over the spin of the golf ball, which is the key to all aspects of golf."
http://rifeputters.com/technology/rollgroove-technology/
I wouldn't torch it....

Hey everyone, I've read this thread and a bunch of other, all of which have been very informative. I just tried torching my abaco and it actually came out really well. I thought I had cleaned the putter head thoroughly but I must have handled it again b/c there are a few "spots" in the torched finish. Is there anyway to even this out? I was thinking of re-cleaning and just retorching but wasn't sure if this would work. Thanks for the help!

So basically if you want to do similar stuff to in here it goes:

Sand/rough pad
Clean using acetone/thinner
Torch then immediately dip into some sort of solution?

Is that more or less how it goes?

I wanted to do something with this KC I just picked up for $9.95 from Play it Again:

I love BLACK putters. I would love to do this one and get that dull black I believe that was on the Cameron on the first page. I suppose I would do either white or red paint fill. Any ideas/suggestions? The KC (as you all probably know) all tend to have the unique hossel which may or may not come loose from heat???

Here's another TeI3 I did recently. There's a long thread about how it came to fruition but I figured I would post the pics here as well.

Hey guys i have a Taylormade Rossa Daytona i would like to flame a quench black. I have do this a bunch with wedges but they were always raw. I am guessing that this putter is chrome and would have to be stripped? Also what about the insert on the front? Any help is appreciated, here are pics of said putter.

Well, I finished my first attempt at a DIY torching. It ain't perfect, but I think it'll work. It was just too hard to get the neck and the body the same exact shade. I like how the putter head came out. My pictures suck, but it almost looks like distressed leather (kinda)

The neck came out a little more crispy like a pizza left too long in the oven. Oh well, I was bored and it was sort of fun.

Deerslayer, whats the finish on the circle t and the napa?

Circle T is a stainless steel head that I used the Caswell Blackener on, the Napa, is a carbon steel head that I stripped, buffed and torched and oil quenched the head. here is a before pic of the putter when it was purchased off of ebay:

If people don't want to help you here, I'd suggest going to your local hardware store or even a small business metal finisher and ask around for help. If your hardware store is like mine they will be priceless.

Where did you get the replacement screws for the back of the insert...?

I removed my insert, and then went and lost 2 of the original 4 screws..!!!!!

What size and kind of screws did you use..

Thank you for replying if possible.
