Taylor Made and Titleist torque wrench experts!

webber

Recommended Posts

I did a search and not much came up and what did was conflicting.

Question #1: Can I use my Taylor Made R7 wrench on my Titleist 3 wood?

Question #2: Is the grey TM wrench the same as the yellow R9 and white R11 wrenches?

Experts only please!

The gray and yellow do not provide the same torque as the white. The white has highest torque.

The yellow wrench was designed only for the R7 weights and I'm pretty sure it's 30lb/ft while the white one is 40 lb/ft.
The while TM wrench and the Titleist wrench have the same torque ratings albeit (I have both of them) the white TM wrench seems like it's harder to get that click. The yellow one is not recommended for use in tightening shafts.

The grey and yellow are torqued at 30 lbs-sq.inch, the white wrench is at 40. If I'm not mistaken the Titleist is also 40 lbs.-sq.inch(only had one for a brief period, and didn't torque test it, sorry).

This is what I have heard as well, and I have been using the white R11 wrench and the Titty interchangeably without event so far.

Pardon me for being anal but it's in-lbs, not lbs-sq.in or ft-lbs.
[/quote]

Well if you want to get real technical, it's actually inch-pounds-force. As pounds in British units can also refer to weight. But I think we all get that the white TaylorMade wrench and the Titleist wrench are equal at 40, while the two older TM wrenches have the lower value of 30 in-lbf.

The torque wrench rating for what we are discussing here, is defined in a term written as "in-lbs". This term is widely used in written form to describe a specific torque value. However, a more precise written form is also used to describe the same value. It reverses the independent values in the description. It is written as "lbs-in". Both of these unit descriptions identify the same value. Torque is derived from linear force times the distance of rotational force. As member smokey25 states, ft-lbs is not the same as in-lbs!

All that aside, as mentioned above, not all of the Taylor Made and Titleist wrenches have differing torque settings. Each manufacturer will have a certain safety factors built into each's tightening specification, but I wouldn't want to argue with a OEM rep on why I stripped out the Sure-fit threads. The Torx drive appear to be all the same size. So in a pinch, these can be interchanged - however -always with care. The commercials I see, are way to nonchalant about setting up the clubs.

To also add, is a white Taylormade wrench compatible with a Cobra amp cell? I'm not even sure if it's the same tip.

I work in at a golf course and we just use whatever we have handy, titleist on a Tmag, nike on a Callaway, as long as we're talking the new torque wrenches, and have never had an issue, don't know if thats bad to do but have never had one issue.

First, I will agree that using the proper, approved torque wrench is the best option.

Second, I think that mixing and matching torque wrenches between brands tends to be more the norm than not, and there does not seem to be vast amounts of stripped threads or flying clubheads out there.

Third, I also think it's possible to do this by hand, with no torque wrench, and get things to an acceptable torque setting. Though this will depend a lot on experience with threaded fasteners in a multitude of materials. Way back when, I had a job involving just this sort of thing. One of the old machinists had me tighten a bunch of threaded fasteners in a bunch of different materials to the point of failure (stripped threads). The most common combo was a steel screw into an aluminum hole, but we even played around with some "exotic" stuff like titanium. The whole point of the exercise is that, eventually, your hands learn what a reasonable torque level is for most common fasteners. Most fasteners are not so critical as to absolutely require a torque wrench (some are, for sure). An experienced set of hands, in my opinion, is more than sufficient for this particular task.

Finally, a bit of light (purple) threadlocker is not a bad bit of insurance.

Looking for experts in the land of opinions and hobbyist... 😛  right...   As demonstrated by someone saying if anything fits... My buddies wife uses his expensive kitchen knives as screw-drivers.  A special breed.

TM wrench tip is the same as Titleist, I have both.  I believe the wrench in my bag is TM.   Can't address the other inquires.

Thank goodness someone clarified that to inch pounds.  40 ft lbs was going to be fun to watch , until the tip screw exploded.

After reading the first few posts I was gonna reply with an in-lbs "being anal" comment, but then saw someone did just that back in 2011 lol.
