Top 5 Courses You Have Played

Recommended Posts

I've played Cashen 4 times I think (might be 3, not 100% sure) so I'm not just saying this off of one playing either.

The rest of the courses you have are very good to outstanding. Even the Valley course at Portrush is very good. As far as I know I have played every single links course in Ireland/NI as of 2013 and RCD and Lahinch are definitely near the top of my list. Good call on skipping Castle BTW, it isn't very good either. It is bad in a different way than Cashen though. Cashen has great views with absolutely ridiculous holes, Castle is basically in a field and boring. Cashen, while terrible, is not boring. I've heard for years that they are redoing Cashen but it never seems to get done.

In no particular order:

Tumble Creek Club (private)

The Rio Grande Club

Maderas

Sahalee (I've played all three 9's, East is my favorite) (private)

Circling Raven

Tumble Creek is a simply amazing course, but I'm headed to Scotland in May for the first time so this list may change soon ;)

I've only been playing for 16 months and don't have the budget to go play the really famous courses yet, but here's the best I've made it to so far, in order of how much I loved it.

1) Reflection Bay

2) Bear Dance

3) Coyote Springs

4) Redlands Mesa

5) Oak Quarry

I plan to play a few really nice courses per year, with at least one big destination course. My top choices that I plan to actually play eventually would be:

Wolf Creek (some time in the next few months)

Fossil Trace (certainly this year, probably fall)

Cascata (end of year, if I'm lucky)

Shadow Creek (I'll need to hit a big jackpot first)

Pebble Beach (it'll be a few years at best, but I'll pay)

Coeur d'Alene (who knows)

Bandon (who knows)

St. Andrews (almost a total fantasy)

Augusta (ACTUALLY a total fantasy)

1) Cypress Point

2) Yeamans Hall

3) Kinloch

4) Sankaty Head

5) California Golf Club

I've played more than half of the top-20. I'd play these courses any day over the likes of Torrey, Kiawah, Baltsurol, etc. At some point, you aren't looking for every US Open track to play. It's more about having a good time on a fun layout. These courses fit that bill perfectly.

Saint Andrews

Carnousti

Kingsbarns

Valderrama

Torrey Pines

PGA west Stadium Course

Norba Club de Golf (Cáceres, Spain)

I won´t rank them...

Saint Andrews was incredible, but it is the course in which I believe you´ll need more rounds in order to appreciate all the subtleties of the course

To me Carnousti was next to perfect!

Kingsbarns is so much easier than those two!

Valderrama is really tough, but very very nice

Torrey Pines was long..but I loved it

The stadium Course was a cool experience which I have to notice, for it was my first Pete Dye golf course

The last course...is my home course!!

1. Royal St Georges

2. Prestwick Old

3. Royal Dornoch

4. Royal Birkdale

5. North Berwick

I've left Turnberry and The Old Course St Andrews off the top 5 because having played them a few times, I honestly think they're both somewhat overrated. I've tried to take them in to my psyche on a few occasions but simply can't see where the fascination lies from a Golfing shotmaking point of view. All of the above supersede them both from that perspective many times over. There are Courses like Silloth on Solway, Royal Aberdeen, Moray Old and Hillside that I think are better overall tests than both St Andrews Old Course and Turnberry. Sacrilege to some to say that, but just speaking as I find, sorry. Depends what one is looking for though I suppose.
