1.Youngstown Country Club

Grew up on this course, my father, grandparents and aunts/uncles were members- tons of memories. It's an old school place, I love everything about it. Haven't been back to Ohio in a long time, hopefully will get to play here again someday soon.

2. Spyglass Hill

Played it a few times however I will never forget my first experience- a foggy morning, really interesting caddie from Scotland with all the right stories, a near hole in one, deer everywhere...I find it very peaceful and actually prefer it to Pebble.

3.Bay Hill

Stayed in the lodge, woke up every morning and ate breakfast then went to play. Understated elegance, doesn't try too hard, it just is.

Drinks in the men's bar off the locker room every afternoon, amazing stories, great people, great poker games- I could live here. Love it.

4. Streamsong

I love both the red and blue course. Amazing walk, awesome caddies, really stunning land formations.

5.Riviera CC

Those greens were lightning fast! Had a great time.

Honorable mentions

Pebble Beach

I didn't play very well, would have prob enjoyed more if I did...but it's beautiful obviously. I want to play again.

Trump LA

I love it here- bring back the waterfall!

Oak Creek

Sandpiper

Pelican Hill

Such a beautiful place. My wife and I stay at the hotel sometimes to get away.

La Costa

I had my best 7 hole run ever, literally target golf with ease- effortlessly hitting fairways, greens and draining putts.... The perfect day, until my playing partner pointed out my score, which led to a fried egg bunker shot which was the tip of the iceberg for the unraveling on the remaining holes :-( Was still a great day though!

1. Muirfield Village- Dublin, OH (Perfect)

2. Valhalla- Louisville, KY (being from Kentucky this was a bucket list for me. I don't get the hate)

3. Cherokee Plantation- Yemessee, SC (The entire day there was quite an experience. Nobody else on the course all day and no one had played in two weeks. Really old southern plantation with charm)

4. Golf Club at Olde Stone- Bowling Green, KY (great modern design)

5. We-Ko-Pa (Saguaro)- Scottsdale, AZ (If you like Coore and Crenshaw designs you will love)

Mine are more international - haven't played many courses stateside.

1. Cape Kidnappers (NZ)

2. New South Wales Golf Club (Aus)

3. Sahalee (liked it because it was so different to the courses we have in the Southern Hemisphere)

4. Harbour Town

5. Sentosa (Singapore)

I'll assume that is the Serapong course at Sentosa. The other one (Tanjong) isn't very good unless you just have to play at night.

Love CK and NSW. Both great courses.

Old or Cashen at Ballybunion? I'll be playing both for the first time in May, and 9 out of 11 people I've spoken to pick Cashen over the Old... Not Handicapping for the 3x more expensive green fees on the Old....

I played the old. It's an incredible course. Very tough. You definitely don't feel like you've wasted your money once you get to the ocean views on the back 9.

I can only imagine for now. I've been dreaming of playing the Old course for years. It was only recently, while planning this trip, that I've come to appreciate the oft forgotten little brother. I'm very excited to touch down in Co Kerry, and I fully expect that one if not both of the Ballybunion courses will usurp courses currently in my top five. Though I've played many fantastic and highly rated courses over the years, my top 5 is clearly indicative of the fact that I have a disposition to favour courses similar to those found at Ballybunion.

Cashen is a terrible golf course. I've never heard a soul say a positive word about it. It is the only course in Ireland where I have taken a cart because the routing is so ridiculous. It has about 5 cool holes but most are terrible. It is mostly relegated to kids and poor players for the membership. The last three times our group has played at Ballybunion we've skipped Cashen even though we end up paying for both when booking.

Really? Wow! First I've heard such a negative review. It's hard to pass up when it's free when booking along side the old, so we will certainly give it a chance. Maybe a good thing I passed on the caddie there?? I almost went with the same logic when booking Lahinch, but everything steered me well clear of the Castle course there. Every photo I saw screamed cow patch.

Any other courses to stay away from? We have the two Ballybunions, Lahinch Old, Ardglass, RCD, and the two Portrush courses booked.
