Fellow larger homosapiens , question on lie angle

Ive played from +2 to -2 down of titleist and mizzie standards. Recently back to flat, after flattening out, hitting a touch behind the ball and high on the face, but center. Based on ball flight a touch high and short,

Am I

Coming in too steep

Need to adjust to the physical club change a bit (actual Practice heaven forbid - bad word here on wrx)

or did I go too flat (the divots while a touch behind, width wise and deepth are good, no heavy toe wear , etc)

the step up flatter IMOP puts me in a more athletic posture at address and the follow through positons feel better, also the handle closer to my body.

Thanks, probably should be in instruction, but the capitve tall crowd here is a great sounding board

6'9". I play PING i20's at +1.5" and 6* upright. Ping has what they call "Maroon Dot ++". It is not published but can be ordered custom from the factory.

My issue is that I have irons that fit perfectly but fairway woods are a different story. I do not know if anything that can go that upright.

Exactly. That spec is for a special fraternity of people that are too tall to be playing golf, but too stupid to realize it. :taunt:

Last I got fitted was 1 1/2 long and 4 degrees up, but got talked out of it on here. Going in for a fitting this week some time and am gonna go with what he says, or possibly start a little longer depending on what he has for over-length clubs on the cart.

ETA - 6'5"

The only fitting club that I know of that is +4* are the Ping Maroon Dots. You can find it here and there at retailers.

I know that TM goes +3* on their fitting clubs but Ping is the only one that goes higher.

Not to worried about getting the lie angle perfect during the fitting. Going to do each iron individually with a dry erase once they're built. Hoping they have more than a +1" long, but if not I'll probably start at +2 when I build them and go from there. Mostly just wanting to get fit to a shaft, though I worry how different they'll play longer.

Two golfers - both 6' 2" - one has shorter arms than the other - will fit different lengths.

Moral of the story - height is not the deciding factor in determining specs.

Two golfers - both 6'2" - both have the same arm length but one has broader shoulders - will fit different lengths.

Moral of the story - height and arm length combined are not necessarily the deciding factors in determining specs.

Last moral - what ever anyone else measures is irrelevant. It only matters what YOU measure.

This is the problem. Most fitters don't know how to measure this. So you end up testing/experimenting and spending a lot of money trying to find the right combination. But I will say the awareness of this is growing, which is great for the big guy's.

6ft4 200lbs with a 6ft6ish wingspan

Play with +1" (4-58) standard lie. Woods/hybrid are all standard.

I learned how to play with standard lies so I think my swing has just adapted through the learning process. Never been fitting but this thread has me thinking. Don't really have a standard miss though. Actually hit it pretty straight most of the time.

6'4", +1 inch and +1 degree upright.

Just wondering... my game is coming back and I hit 7i through to 3i and the 18-degree driving iron really well but struggle with 8i, 9i and P. The typical miss is either hitting them fat or pulling them to the right badly (I play leftie). They feel sort of short at address. Could it be that +1 inch is not enough for the short irons but just right for the mid and long ones?

.75 up (blue dot)

Driver at 46.25"

Recently bought an uncut shaft that I thought I may tip 1/2" for my driver. So I installed at 46.25", D8 Swingweight and its like a switch flipped on. I have been so caught up in chasing control, thinking I needed a 45" driver or possibly shorter, but when I went longer, I find the middle of the club face more often than I ever did at 45". Always seemed to miss low on the face.

For me, i'm 6'3 with some pretty lengthy arms.. i've been "fitted" for .5 inch long and 3* upright.. then the pulls and hooks started coming, then went back to a standard set and wow i am striking it wonderfully.... so now my specs are 1/4 over at most, and standard to 1 degree up.. i'm interested in seeing other tall golfer's specs.. especially a tall golfer with a FLAT lie.. and i'd like to see swing videos if possible. thanks!

I had similar luck with longer more upright clubs.

I'm 6'2" and when I got my last set I went only 1.5* upright and .25" longer and have never struck the ball so we'll.

I'm 6'3 and play 0.5" over what I consider standard (38.5" 5 iron). I play all my wedges at the same length (36.25"). Never messed with lie angle, but the two sets that I have both play at 62.5 degree in 7 iron.

Question for the rest of you that have extended irons yourself, or had irons extended not from the manufacturer: What have you done about swingweight? I have one set with C taper lites that have measured around D2, but the other one measures around D5-D6. Little heavy for my tastes

Longer on the short irons - maybe go to +2.. and then with shorter intervals (i.e. 1/4 instead of 1/2) also effectively "grows" the short irons

Has worked for me

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm 6'3" with pretty long arms and broad shoulders, my wingspan is 6'7". There was a thread that I cannot find now about taller golfers finding their ideal PW length based on WTF and shoulder to floor length and some other factors and the researcher on the thread and I determined that a 37" PW was my number and my LW ended up being about 36.5" I have been hitting balls and played a few rounds this way and the SW is killing me. I use 3/8" gaps between clubs and while having my PW be the length of a standard 7-iron is easier on my lower back, my rhythm and tempo are a mess because of the increased SW. My wedges are in E4-E5 range for SW. I have decided go back down to a 36 5/8" PW with 3/8" gaps going to the 4-iron, my LW will be 36 1/8".

I have always pulled my shorter clubs and thought the longer length would stop that. I think it does, but the feel is terrible and touch around the greens with wedges is not good.

6'3" and have always played +1/2 and 2-3 degrees up because that's what I was told at some fairly poor fittings. Finally did a proper fitting last week and was told I don't need longer clubs and need to work off of a lie angle of 62 in a 6 iron, which is quite a bit flatter than where I have been.
