Aircraft noise in PGA golf tournaments

I'd like to share my views and invite responses regarding the almost incessant drone of aircraft throughout tournaments. I often see the banners belonging to these aircraft and know it is not simply commercial aircraft traffic.

I've only found one post on this topic yet can't understand why the golfers don't seem bothered, only one commentator (Butch Harmon) has ever mentioned it within my hearing; and I expected thousands of posts from other golf watchers fed up with the noise.

It seems strange that there appears to be nothing to stop this happening and even stranger that no golfer seems affected by it...perhaps because it's almost continuous. There have been occasions when I have actually turned off the sound as it has so strongly affected my enjoyment of the golf.

I should be most interested to hear other views on this matter.

I've noticed it as well. It's a little annoying, but not quite like the Vuvuzelas at the World Cup.

I doubt if there is much that can be done to stop it. Especially given a decent amount of it is coming from the engines on the blimps they use to give aerial shots for TV coverage.

I apologise for the extra posting, which was unintentional. It may be a non issue in a gofing sense but to me (and some others) it is an issue.

Aircraft noise does bother some players. I've seen players back off of putts due to the engine noise from the network blimps...nevermind engine noise from fixed-wing aircraft.

The issue is that (on TV) you are typically seeing the players who are playing well. They tend to be in a good head space, able to concentrate well, and are less likely to be distracted by the noise. Players at or below the cut line? Different story.

Aircraft noise is usually drowned out by someone screaming "MASHED PO-TAAAAAAAAY-TOOOOESSSSS!"

You usually won't hear it on TV. The times I heard it were when I was actually in the gallery, and the blimp was flying at low altitude in still conditions.

It shocked me the first time I actually heard it. I never would have believed it was possible if I hadn't experienced personally.

You can hear the Metlife Snoopy 2 blimp (the number of times the commentary team thanks the blimp for "these pictures" has burned the name into my memory) noises on certain shots, its a like never ending buzz. I've been noticing more lately and can imagine how annoying it is to play with in the background

playing while there is a constant "noise" in the backround like traffic or airplanes crowd noise etc is not so bad it is the sudden random noises like a car honking etc that are the real distractions

There seemed to be a lot of goons flying motorised bed sheets off the cliffs of Torrey Pines (or was it Pebble Beach?). Visually irritating as well. Also the effects mikes at the WGCMatchplay seem to be in the hospitality suites because all I can hear is clinking glasses and droning drunkards.

Two points:

1) The airplane noise you hear on your TV set is not necessarily the same thing the players hear in reality. They use long range mics and these tend to pick up and amplify peripheral sound.

2) A pro tournament golfer that allows airplane noise to bother him probably lacks the focus and mental toughness to be successful.

A fairly quiet Friday at the World Matchplay in Arizona. I'll re-post when there's one of the really noisy ones.Not an unobtrusive blimp, which I agree provides a spectacular and event-enriching service.

The only time I've ever, ever, ever been bothered by a plane noise (and I live near an airprort AND a giant Air Force Base) is when, during an air show, a Blue Angel hit like Mach 2 (or whatever) in my back swing. These professionals play with people literally ON TOP of them when they hit the ball outside the ropes. Planes don't bother me so I doubt those guys even notice them.

I've been to many tournaments and I certainly can't call the blimp's engine noise unobtrusive. It's really annoying, and very noticeable on TV as well.

As far as the blimp pictures, I like them in small doses. A little of Pebble Beach and Hawaiian scenery and whales is OK; a little of following the ball in the air is tolerable (despite the technical achievement). But what I really like is that it seems there is more camera work from behind the players such that the viewer can follow the ball's flight from the player's perspective-- what we are more accustomed to as golfers when we hit a shot. I appreciate seeing the trajectory and whether it is a draw/hook or fade/slice. More of that; less putting. And, no, Shot Tracker is not the same.

So if we get rid of all the noise, will that make the players hurry up? Or am I going to still going to have to wait 5 minutes to watch someone set up and back off of a shot?

There's all kinds of noise going on constantly , most of which aren't apparent on TV. Planes are just one of many.

If you can't put it out of your mind and get straight to business , well you'd never have gotten out there in the first place.

I learned to play golf on Naval Air Stations. The closest Muni to my house is split in half by an active Biz Jet Runway.... The aircraft approach pattern is over the driving range. You could literally hit one of these aircraft while golfing.....200ft to 100ft above you on final. It doesn't seem to bother anyone that I have noticed.....myself included. I did notice the sound of Lycoming engines during Match Play the last couple of days on television, but I doubt it's that troublesome on location....

And I would bet the PGA pros are not bothered by the noise when they realize the television rights pay for the potential millions that they deposit every year in their banks. So I'm sure they will "suffer" with this "horrible " noise for a long time to come.

Yes I wonder why with today's technology TV cannot mute/lessen the VERY annoying background noise (incessant drone) create by the aircraft. There have been times the TV gets the OFF function used and I go find something better to occupy my time.

That said; I quit going to the beach during tourist season. I go to the beach for peace and quite. Not to listen to some plane flying around towing an advertising banner. ARGH!
