Aircraft noise in PGA golf tournaments

I just hope they make a movie about Sully! Then I can watch it and make an educated assessment 😊

Never seen that one or the other one with the Sam Jackson flight or flier? Where he’s addicted and crashes a jet?

But no means is it common sense, but if you are around aviation at all it’s fairly easy. For all my childhood, I’ve had a pilot in the house. For 20 years of that pilots were next door, across the street, down the road because we lived on base. It got to the point where at Kadena I could tell the difference between engines and know what jets were coming or going because you live the life and know what is going on. Could I fly a jet? No chance. But when the NTSB releases their report and I read it or read Popular Mechanics, Aviation Week, Air Force magazine articles about the incident you tend to be decently informed about the facts and understand the decision that the river was the best option. And absolutely hindsight is 20/20, all three options could have been absolute disaster. It just so happened that everyone lived. The quote that sticks out to me is, “I was making deposits for 35 years for one big withdrawal” now whether sully set the jet down in the river or not idk, technically I believe the FO is to take the stick during emergencies while the captain works the problem and checklists.

During emergencies nothing is more important than to aviate, navigate, and communicate. All three of those were done to darn near perfection throughout the whole incident.

So, like over 10 years ago, we are flying over to Italy and we had rented a bunch of DVD episodes of Lost to watch on the plane (lol remember portable DVD players)

We never saw the show before so we’re like half way over the Atlantic and we pop in the very first episode.

We’re watching and it shows all these people on an airplane and then all of a sudden

The plane breaks is half and everybody is getting sucked out into the abyss and dying!

I turn to wife and say,

Dont worry, we’re totally safe, what are the odds that our plane crashes…while we’re watching a plane crash!

🤣

Watching Golf Channel and PointsBet just put those odds at 1 in 13 million 😉

Haha thanks Cougs. I was actually being silly and am aware of the movie. I live about 10 minutes away from where he lived when the landing on the Hudson took place. So the local media took it upon themselves to cover him (and the movie) at nauseam. But nice to know I have my own personal golfWRX genie!Excuse Me Disney GIF

Yeah, I figured.  👍

Who would ever guess they'd make a movie about that event.  And who would ever guess Tom Hanks would play him.

Here is a real question. Lets say we live in the a hypothetical world where an airport runway is instead a giant treadmill. Let's say this treadmill can match the speed required for an Airbus A320 to take off (~180mph). If the Airbus were to attempt to take off while the treadmill matched it's speed, but in reverse, what would happen? A) The plane would remain stationary B) The plane would take off. C) The plane would crash into the river at the end of the giant treadmill

Assuming a couple of things, it would be B, the plane would take off. Airspeed and groundspeed are not the same, and wheel speed (an additional variable which would normally equal groundspeed) is a further third and different term.

Essentially those assumptions are that the wheel bearings are capable of a rolling speed of ~360 mph without catastrophic failure and that the additional rolling drag and friction of the wheel bearings having to account for an extra 180 mph of rolling ground speed don't cause it to fail to achieve a proper airspeed to take off.

But since we're in this hypothetical world, I'm going to assume frictionless wheel bearings and a rolling friction component of zero, so the reverse treadmill operation, while it doubles the wheel speed, has no effect on the plane's actual ground speed nor its airspeed on takeoff.

  • 1 year later...

Golf isn't my thing, but I also found the constant drone during NBC's live coverage of the US Open annoying enough to google the issue and found this quite entertaining thread.  My guess was a blimp, though I never saw one.  With intermittent small aircraft as well, but they are far less annoying.

It's loud, and drones on and on like your neighbor mowing the lawn -- except it never stops!  A few holes were a little quieter, but it never went away for the 30 minutes or so I watched.  Surely NBC is aware! May not bother everyone, but it is an audio issue that should be dealt with somehow.

Oh, wheelspeed =/= groundspeed =/= airspeed.  No airspeed, no lift, airplane no go up.  🙂

I am super annoyed by the aircraft noise at US Open!! The network must have some way of dubbing it out if FAA can’t stop them from flying overhead.

Agreed 100%, I’ve watched a bunch of golf and don’t remember it being as noticeable as it is in this broadcast.  I assumed it was the blimp, whatever it is the constant buzzing in the background is all I can hear…which I guess some would say is a blessing I can’t hear the announcers 😂
