I saw a new commercial for a brand Jack is tied to. I think it is heavy brand, that does the putters and such. Apparently he always used them in his grips...but I have no knowledge of cost or benefit. They did mention better clubhead feel and speed as marketing tools.

Your grip of choice + a one time investment in TourLock Pro = Affordability. The TourLock weights are reusable. BTW, I've got the Boccieri grips on my driver and fairway...love 'em.

I put the Tour Lock in a few clubs a couple weeks ago and decided its way more practical. Its $6-8 per weight and 1 - you can install it on any grip you want and 2 - very easy to move to new grips. If you change grips on a regular basis I dont see how the $15-20 grips are practical - but thats just IMHO.

$6-8/weight + $6-8/grip = about what a Secret Grip will cost. But as you point out, the weights are reusable, so you're only out that half of the equation once. I've said before I think the Secret Grip will be a much more viable option, and a better option, if Boccieri can some how get he price down to around the $10 range. Better because the Secret Grip is a bit more than just the plug in the end--heavier compound, built up lower hand, longer profile. This means a significant portion of the extra weight is distributed down the length of the grip. I'm not a Tour Lock expert, but I think you can do the same sort of thing with Opti-Vibe system. Also, I think the Balance Certified system will do it too, but these can up your cost to something like $30/club. And at that, suddenly the cost of the Secret Grip isn't quite so outrageous.

Good points. Anyone know how much the secret grip weights in total? I put one on my driver and after a good few shots at the range, it certainly seems promising. I was trying to countact a heavy swing weight anyway (D7), so it was the perfect opportunity to give it a try (after secret grip install my swing weight is now C9). I have yet to play a round of golf with it, but I was piping some at the range. I'll provide a more robust review in two weeks when I hit Myrtle!

Google or search on here for clevis pin. There was a thread on here a while back where people were buying them to counterbalance their putters. They sell at lowes or Home Depot for about a dollar and come in different sizes. They fit perfectly and flush into the end of the shaft and the grip goes right of them. A good way to experiment for cheap to be sure you like it.

Right, the math would obviously play out the more grips you go through. For me, I change my grips 2x a year.

The other thing is if you dont like the composition - whether its the thicker portion of it or the longer grip or simply the material itself - of the counterbalance grip you are out of luck.

Good call...I'd read about this method some time back, but as I'm not much of a do-it-yourself kind of guy, it sounded too complicated. Today I just picked up a 1/2"x2" pin out of curiosity, and now I feel really stupid. The pin weighed in at 47g and slipped perfectly into an old shaft with a little bit of masking tape to snug it up. Throw on a grip, and done. Couldn't be any simpler.

Thanks for the reminder.

Thought I'd bump this thread, as I recently noticed a price drop on the SG's. Golf Galaxy and Golf Works both have them down to $12.99/grip, which I think is a much more attractive price point. Until now, I've only had these in my woods and hybrid (Tour Locks in the rest of the bag)...at this price I might consider switching over completely.

I have done the clevis pin method with a couple of putters and it works amazing. I used a 7/16" x 3" pin and it got me to the weight I was looking for with my regular SS 1.0 grip. I had to use the thinner pin due to a graphite shaft, but it was money once I finished. I was thinking about possibly trying this out in a hybrid or driving iron just to test it out and see what happens.

Good bump of the thread, hadnt seen it in a while.

I stayed with Tour Locks the whole year in my putters because they were easier to experiment with. I ended up building 6 or so counterbalanced putters this winter out of old belly putters and the Superstroke grips are very accommodating to the Tour Locks, very easy to switch between a 20g and a 100g weight and see how each feels.

I remember when this thread first came out and I went looking for the pins. Couldn't fund the size and weight I wanted.. So...

I did something similar with carriage bolts and nuts. You can get carriage bolts from 1" - 6"+ and just add nuts to them until you get the weight you want. It's a little redneck, but you can dial in all you clubs to *exact* weight for about $10 total.
