Can't blame Stewart Cink for playing the Ping I20's. His career was in a tail spin. Ignore the $$ and play what works.

Just curious. I play i5's also. For some reason I thought they were non conforming with the grooves. It just made me think a little more into it if they are. It's not like he just took an oud set out to play then. I'm assuming he would have to go deeper and have Ping put conforming grooves in the old head.

To me it just makes the whole thing a little more interesting.

The retail versions are non-conforming. However, Ping made conforming sets for touring pros.

The Ping 5-series are really solids sticks. I've played both the i5's and g5's at one point in the last 4 years. While I prefer the forgiveness of the g5's (currently in my bag), I would have to rank the i5's as one of Ping's best offerings ever (in terms of looks, playability and forgiveness), and I've owned and used 8 different models over the past 10 years.

D.A. has had those I5's since his days at ILLINOIS at the very least. PING dropped him as a staffer awhile ago, we'll see if that continues. I believe his only equipment deal is with Taylormade. He was basically forced to switched to the R11s last year even though he loved the R9. Love the putter story, his mom is a very good player as well! Great win!

He's not a PING staffer though, they aren't paying him anything to play 11 clubs. Not sure what TaylorMade pays for the hat, bag, and driver deal but it is the #1 Driver in Golf for a reason.

Furyk is pretty much an all Callaway bag now, I think an old TM hybrid may be the only non-Callaway club he uses currently - check out the WITB threads here for further evidence of that.

DA points has been using these irons for years, they must be conforming or this would have been picked up by the Tour before now.

[/quote]He has played the i5s for years . Don't know how long but as long as the years I knew of him. I have owned over 30 sets of irons since 1975 and most within last 20 years. Current set are X Hot Pros 4-pw that might be "the set" ,LOL. Anyway my backup set are 3-pw WRX i5s, S300, I bought from a head pro's personal stash maybe 5 years ago or so that I highly doubt I will ever part with. Rarely play them if ever last few years but probably still as good as any set out there.

Why are people so shocked when a guy wins with something that just works for him? Irons have not really changed all that much the last ten years--nor have putters for that matter. Now...if he won with a ten year old ball or driver--that to me would be very news-worthy.

Yeah it may well be that callaway makes up most of his bag. But as far as his deal goes with them it's for ball and driver only.

I'm always amazed at how caught up we are on the latest and how much we're willing to spend. While most of the guys (pros) we aspire to play like are playing older equipment. These irons are 7 yards longer. This driver is 10 yards longer. We need the latest to play municipals and pros are winning tournaments from the championship tees with older equipment. This is why I started building my own clubs this year.
