JW's Adams DHy review

Dizz

Recommended Posts

Let me preface this review by saying I have pretty much played or hit EVERY driving iron out there. I don't want to get into which one does this or that because this is about the DHy but I will say I've never hit or owned one that I was totally happy with-- whether it was forgiveness (or lack of), distance, look ,etc.

For me the whole reason behind the driving iron hybrid is comfort-- the look of an iron at address seems to give me more confidence than a hybrid or 5 wood. However when you move to an iron with that little loft you generally have to hit them pretty solid otherwise it ends up being a waste of a club. Until the DHy, the i20 was the best hybrid I had to date. It was still compact, mine had an excellent stock shaft and I hit it very well from all lies. Like any club I still had plenty of wayward shots with bad swings. This season alone I've had 3 other OEM's driving iron hybrids in the bag trying to make one work and I thought I had one that was close to being "it" until I hit the DHy. I think for me it stems on shaft length... I go from 4 iron at 38.5-38.75" to a traditional hybrid which is 40.25-40.5" long. Not a HUGE problem by any means but I was always comfortable with the iron style hybrid's length but with the traditional hybrid style performance.

My Adams rep was at our facility for a fitting day and he told me "this is the hottest club on tour", "guys out there are writing letters to their sponsors trying to get an exemption (break their coctracts) to play this club" and of course I hear this all the time so I didn't think much of it but he said hey if you'll put one in your bag I'll get you one. When I had some free time I went down to the range and wasn't expecting much because I hadn't hit a ball in 2-3 days and generally you don't want to warm up with a 3 iron with a short time off.

Well-- the first three balls I hit felt fantastic. It looks great from address, feel great, sounds solid (a muted solid), and the flight was even better. I got in touch with the rep and got one on order with the stock White Tie X.. I only had the opportunity to hit the stock White Tie Stiff flex but I loved the feel of the shaft but thought it would be ever better slightly stiffer.

Fast forward a week and I had it in hand. I took it to the range and hit it again... VERY well but a slightly flatter flight. I played 9 holes with it in my bag the next day and I hit it off 3 tees and it is LONG. After 27 holes with it I have two memorable shots with it. 244 to a middle pin on a par 5 from a perfect lie on the fairway I hit it about as good as I could and it finished about 6" short of the hole. Next one, I had 228 from a lie in the rough that was sitting down just slightly (grass in between the face and ball) and I hit a nice 2 yard fade that still carried the front bunker (I shot it at 210 to carry) and finished on the back edge of the green.

Now for the numbers- I hit it several times on TrackMan and took one pic that I thought was incredible.

1.51 smash factor with a driving iron hybrid. For example- my driver that day was 1.49 smash factor. Now that is cool!

In closing- the Adams DHy is the BEST driving iron style hybrid out there IMO. It has the best ball speed and most forgiveness of any iron style hybrid on the market from everything I have tested. For me its fantastic that I can get the ball speed and performance from this style hybrid without needing a shaft length over 40". It blends VERY well with an iron set and has the length progression I'm looking for AND the performance I'm looking for... I'll say it again- this is the first one that you can get the comfort of an iron and the performance from a wood or traditional style hybrid.

The only con- it doesn't look "cool" in the bag compared to some of the others... Lol. That is the ONLY flaw I can find in this club.

To dumb it down-- The DHy looks like an iron, performs like a hybrid, has the ball speed of a fairway wood and the efficiency of a driver.

If you're interested in a driving iron style hybrid this one is a must try.

I'm sure I missed something along the way so any questions, comments, concerns please fire away.

I got to hit the S9031 18* and DHY 21* yesterday at G/S. I was VERY skeptical at the looks of the DHY. Like you said, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to how it performs. I use a 3H 21* that is my 215-220 club. I was hitting the DHY mid 220's, it felt very easy to hit and the stock shaft is fantastic!!!

On a whim I tried to hit the 712u #3 as well. Hit it on the screws and it's VERY long but you have a very little margin of error. I was hitting it 220+/- but don't flush it and you are getting 170 low duck hooks!

I concur with JW......DEMO THIS DHY CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is this club off the turf?
[/quote]

That TrackMan screen shot is from the turf. I've only hit it off the tee twice in probably 50 swings.

Ok guys, lets all take a minute to thank J.W. for all of his FREE time and effort. These detailed reviews are very good and much appreciated.

First off, good to see the Anser 3 wood in the bag :) I saw one of these in a GG last week and it definitely looked odd to me but hey if it performs who cares.

I did like a comment you made previously about not having they speed for a 2 iron when you had the 712U, I think that's something a lot of people overlook.

In a club like this, would it be beneficial to match the shaft to your irons? That way you have an iron, but with a little more meat behind it for some added distance and ease out of rough?

But, I guess if its a driving iron the idea is a lighter shaft to help get it out there. Depends on personal needs I guess.

Great review as always! Thanks!

I think in a perfect world it would be built right alongside your iron set in that progression. However when I hit the club as well I am right now I don't want to mess with it. I don't see how I could possibly get better results with any kind of shaft or spec change. For me a hybrid is a club that I can trust from the tee and hit for second shots on par 5's... I'm not so much worried about much else. The misses need to be in play. Let's be honest if I'm 225-250 yards out I just want to make solid contact and get the shot online. There aren't many golfers here or anywhere (save playing professionals) who are knocking down pins from that yardage... and even the best players in the world aren't either. This club allows me (so far) to do that as I have not truly mis-hit it yet. If I get it around the green from 225+ its a good shot and on the green is a bonus because I should be able to get it up and in from where it ends up. From the tee I feel the same way... having a reliable club is HUGE for playing under pressure.

The worst shot I hit with it so far- playing a par 3 at 228 and I kinda hit a slight toe ball. I hit it without a tee because I was just practicing and it finished pin high on the right fringe about 35 feet. That shot with a normal hybrid design for me probably ends up in the right bunker. That same swing with my 712U probably relies heavily on the first bounce because it would not have carried as far as the DHy with the same contact. Both are fantastic hybrids but the DHy definitely shines in that area.

Anyone interested in LONG, forgiving iron style hybrids just needs to give this thing a hit. I wrote this review because I was truly impressed with the product and thought it would be useful for anyone thinking about trying that style club.

I can echo J.W.'s sentiments, I have the 9031 20 degree and the DHy in 24 degree and 200-225 (mere mortal distance here) is now a distance that I don't shy away from or fear.

I previously had the Cally x utility prototype, and while that was long, the fact that the club does not sit square when left to rest on the ground drove me crazy.

The 712u feels the most forged iron like, the callaway utility feels the hottest, but there is no denying that both of the Adams clubs perform great.

For me on TrackMan... the X-Utility was the slowest of all of them. 712U was about .5-1 mph better ball speed which was pretty equal to the Mizuno MP H4 for me. The DHy was about 2.5-3 mph faster than the 712U for me.

Great review J.W. after avoiding traditional hybrids for many years the appearance this year of the many driving iron hybrids intrigued me and I decided to try them out. I had the opportunity to try the 712u, Callaway X-Utility and the DHy. The 712 was the best looking in my opinion but like OrangeCrush I found that unless you hit it right out of the middle be prepared for a poor outcome. And in my case not hitting it out of the middle happens more than I would like so I quickly decided that the 712u was out of my league. The Callaway in my opinion was much more forgiving than the 712u but for whatever reason I did not get along with it and did not hit it very well.

This leaves the DHy, all i can say is read J.W.'s original post. I love the looks, sound, feel and at least for me gave the best performance. At the end of the day the 18* DHy is in my bag, if you are looking at this type of club give the DHy a hit you will not be disappointed.

I cannot find custom options? Will Adams adjust lie or will it fit in a regular loft/lie machine? Thanks.

Hit this yesterday and i loved it! BUT The Super LS was evem more incredible. I was considering getting a 4 wood, but the Super easily took that place. The DHy is a monster... Low, flat bullets that will just go. If we had more links style courses i would have gone with it for sure! But the Super LS was just so Pure.

Safe to assume that most of you guys have fast SS if you are playing driving irons. I have a slow SS. (95+ driver). Any chance of me getting this DHy off the deck on long shots? Before everyone says that hybrids are going to be a better option... I know. However, i really have only gotten along with one hybrid (A12Pro). I hate the new hybrids that look like fairway woods and am looking at driving irons.

If you can launch normal 4 and 5 irons fine then you'll be better with this... think of it as a higher launching long iron with better ball speed and more forgiveness.

Great review, thanks for the taking the time to post the details yet again. Seriously, I like my 18* so much I'm thinking about getting a 24* to replace both my 3i and 4i so I can carry four wedges all the time.

I added a mini review in my WIIB thread about this club and it echoes your thoughts. The DHY is a big winner and the white tie matches up beautifully with the head. I'm loving my 21* so much i'm now taking the 4 iron out as well and sticking in a 24* (same setup). That essentially means anything over 200yds i have more forgiveness which I need and want.

JW - still adamant on 2 headcovers huh? lol. The DHY hybrid is a sweet headcover it's ok to use it ;-)

Does come with head cover. I could see it getting pretty bang up

The headcover is not snug on my DHY. I tried a putter headcover, and it fit pretty well. But for now I'm using a knitted iliac; the long sleeve keeps it in the bag.

I didn't like the Dhy at first but I think I'm in love now. Just make sure you try it first especially if you are trying to fit it into a certain yardage gap. I was hitting the 18* at least 15 yards further than my 4 wood.
