Any other coffee lovers here?

Oh my, there are some other coffee crazies out there :)

We had a new coffee joint come into town a little over a year ago, and they have made me a coffee snob. The owner roasts his own beans only from Africa, which I first thought was crazy, but they are incredible. He always has Ethiopian, Kenyan, and Burundi, but can only sometimes get the Rwanda which is my absolute favorite. He only does V60 pour-overs, Chemex and Aeropress. He is very particular about grain size for each, weight of beans going in, water temp, and degassing of the beans. I thought I knew what good coffee was, but never actually knew until he came in.

Now, he unfortunately closed his shop and is concentrating on selling the beans he roasts. They are still the best, but I can't quite prepare them exactly how he did...

We buy 4 lbs of locally roasted beans at a time and grind what we need per pot.

Have a blade style Cuisinart grinder (pulverizer) that I'd like to replace with an economy burr mill (~$100).

Any suggestions?

I use a Capresso burr grinder that I've had for 3 years that gets used every day

Absolutely a coffee lover here. Use a Breville machine everyday. Favorite coffe on earth is from a local company. Little river roasting company. Look them up online. They fly in some of the best freshest beans anywhere. Favorite currently is the organic Guatemalan .... nothing like it when you get the grind just right and she hums out a couple shots of creamy goodness.

Once you make your own with quality stuff you wil think Starbucks is like McDonald’s for hamburgers.

Kauai Coffee Co.

Visited twice myself and the folks have been more than I. But they turned me on to coffee as I never touched the stuff even while in the Marine Corps. Kauai ships beans or many of their grinds to the lower 48. Great way to drink their java, seeing as I cannot afford to live there yet. I’m still a noob so I haven’t ventured into roasting or grinding, but there’s always time to learn.

Great thread.

I've used my Baratza Encore every day for four years and it's still going strong. I paid a little over $100 for it from Amazon. The burr grinder will give you much more even sized pieces than the blade so the flavor will be evenly extracted from all the coffee.

My favorites right now are a Kona and JBM I have been buying on ebay for years.

As for Espresso, no need top drop a huge pile on a machine, get good espresso, and just use the stove top pots that are like $25, make a great shot or 3.....

I am a coffee junkie.

Oooooh, I missed this thread. I have been roasting coffee for about 3.5 years, twice a week. I guess I consider myself a coffee nut.

For my daily morning coffee with the wife, just a typical Bunn drip machine with Breville Smart Grinder.

The Bunn will soon be replaced with the Technivorm.

For espresso, coffee americanos, lattes, etc., I use a Rancilio Rocky grinder and Rancilio Silvia espresso machine.

Usually on the weekend mornings, we use the Chemex.

In the evenings, I usually use a pour over method using my Lido2 grinder and a ceramic pour over.

Been a Chemex guy for awhile now and pretty simple setup as a result. Love fooling around with coffees and grinds, etc. Finally got a really good quality Baratza Virtuoso grinder right before Christmas and difference is night and day over my previous Cuisinart grinder. Nothing local to buy so order beans on the internet. Favorite suppliers are Olympia, Four Barrel and JBC. My tastes run to a little sweeter (not flavored) and just buy different offerings and see where they lead.

Thinking of diving into the espresso pool this year, but just can't pull the trigger at this point, happy with my pourovers.

You have everything you need to make great coffee. No matter how much money you spend, it is tough to beat any type of pour over. Hell, you can buy Hario Slim hand grinder and a plastic pour over for almost nothing and make coffee that will rival some of the best machines out there.

I don't disagree at all and have no plans to change my regular coffee setup, but really like an espresso from time to time and can't get anything approaching it anywhere near where I live.

When I was in the Philippines, my in-laws introduced me to their native coffee. My wife and I would go to the local bakery at 6:00am for pandesal and hopia rolls, and upon returning, enjoy them with Barako coffee. Good stuff.

Back in Ohio, around the house we brew Peet's Major Dickason's blend. Maybe twice a week I hit Starbuck's for a cup of Pike Place (with cream) and a lemon loaf.

Sure thing, espresso is great. I would never talk someone out of buying an espresso machine, I love mine. You can cure your espresso cravings on the cheap also with an Aeropress. I have used my Aeropress in the past to make some of my favorite americanos ever. Great little contraption.

My main reason for posting the 1 cup pour over and Hario Slim is to show that you don't need an expensive setup to make incredible coffee. That Hario Slim was my first hand grinder and that thing is a beast for whatever it costs. ($20-$30 I think)

No doubt the hand cranks will work, used to make ice cream that way, but I'm "cranky" enough in the morning and love pushing the button on the grinder or just turning the little timer thing and letting it go! Aeropress and hand cranks are certainly highly recommended but my folks' folks' folks' folks' didn't not come over on the Mayflower for me not to have gizmos!

Absolutely - everyone's lives are different. I enjoy the mechanical(ness), but that doesn't work when you are in a hurry. I work from home so it's not an issue, but my wife is a teacher and leaves in the morning for work. That is when we use the automated grinder and drip coffee. Whenever I have an afternoon, evening, or weekend cup of coffee, I am hand grinding and using the chemex or single pour over.

This is how I break down grinders. You are paying for 2 main things with an electric grinder, the burrs and the automation. Those are the 2 main costs. I am not knocking any of the following grinders because they all have their place.

Hario Slim uses decent ceramic burr grinders, but at the cost of hand grinding. These burrs would be on par with $100-$200 electric grinders. If you want the grind quality of a $100-$200 electric grinder, but don't have the money, the $30 Hario Slim will be your equivalent, but with some work.

If you want a commercial quality grinder in the $1000 plus range, but don't want to spend that kind of money, you can buy the same quality hand grinder (Lido2 or 3) for $200. The downside again is, you have to do the work.

My main point I am trying to get across is, you can have these epic grinders at a percentage of the cost if you are will to grind yourself. There is a place for both manual and electric grinders.

Great thread.

Nice set up that everyone has. I purchased a DeLonghi espresso machine from Target three years ago for $80 and it's worked out well for what it is. I budgeted up to $500 for a machine and the DeLonghi got as good of reviews as anything else up to that level. It came with one of those plastic nipples on the bottom of the porta-filter which I promptly hacked off when I received it and bought a naked filter basket. The creama is about as good as can be expected for an $80 machine. I mostly use it for a lattes, americano, and to steam milk for good hot chocolate.

Huge coffee fan. French press and Cuisinart Burr brew are my two main methods. Going to try an Aero for sure after reading some of your posts. Thanks for the heads up!

After searching for a while, I found these guys to be outstanding:

Been using them for years and trying different beans.

Just got back to this thread. Moved to a Breville maker with a Burr grinder for weekday convienence.

https://www.breville...ant=33178484881

Have a French Press and Aeropress for when I have time.

Also, check out a Clever Dripper. Good combo of a french press and drip. Super easy and quick clean.

Moved to Flight Coffee Co. flightcoffeeco.com (Formerly CQ Coffee Roasters) exclusively as they're 1 mile from my office. They have their roasting lab there and I can watch them roast and package my coffee. They do tastings and also love to educate and hold classes. Their new Brazil is outstanding!

RED ALERT!!!

My beloved Cuisinart has bit the dust and I need a new auto-drip coffee maker, stat!

Same one's on sale for $45 BUT my wife REALLY wants one with a SS reservoir. Not easy to find.

I just want to fill it and hit the go button.

I have a similar bunn except with the glass carafe and it is fantastic. Makes a full pot in 3 minutes. Yesterday I checked the water coming into the filter basket and the first drop was at 201 degrees. Perfect.
