Ping "dalehead"

Yes, the weight pads on the Dalehead Ansers have slopping ends as they go to toward the center of the cavity. The non-Daleheads are more squared off. As one poster stated they also have the 85029 zip code in the cavity. However, there is also a non-Dalehead model that has the 85029 zip code so that alone is not indicative of a Dalehead. The Dalehead must also have the slopping weight pads. The Dalehead is basically the same putter that Ping originally made when they were in Scottsdale. When they moved to Phoenix the early models continued with the same design but now had Phoenix and 85029 in the cavity instead of Scottsdale. Later the design was modified with the weight pads having squared off ends. The zip codes of Ping clubs change as Ping has expanded through the years and moved to different manufacturing locations.

I'm wondering the value of a dalehead. I'm wanting to purchase one to use it, not to collect it so I don't need the super rare version. There is a used one for around $20 but still has time on the auction. The only problem is it's short, 32". Would it be wise to purchase it anyways, ship it back to Ping and have them reshaft it? I've looked around online and it seems that would cost around $30 give er take. So I would have around $50 invested in this vintage putter.

Would I be better off waiting and finding one at the right length (for me 34")? Would I be able to find one for around $50?

Just one Mann's opinion, but I'll agree with o_man on this one for sure. Find a shop that will extend it and do all you can to stay away from sending it back to PING. They no longer re-shaft ANY putters with the stepped, 12" first step steel shafts. If you send it in, you'll get it back with the stepless steel shaft that is standard in most of their putters.
This was learned by experience when I hand delivered an original Scottsdale Anser for a new shaft, only to have it be returned with the stepless steel in its place and about a 70% drop in value.
Stick with the original shaft and if you have to, find another classic Anser to rob a shaft from, if you HAVE to replace it.
Take it with a grain of salt,
LaMont in AZ

Well, they are indeed more valuable. Dalehead regularly fetches $100-$200 while non-dalehead Anser from the same period is generally in $20. There is no functional reason, it's purely cosmetic and collectibility.

Dalehead is the shape that mostly resembles the original Scottsdale Anser, which runs you close to $1,000. That is if you can find one. I guess the close association costs you money. Then, there is the 009 factor, which sets you back at least 3 grand.

I actually got some questions about an earlier post. I think when Ping moved from Scottsdale to Phoenix in 1967, they actually changed the design of Anser. This generation is called "Karsten" Anser. In early 70s, Ping reversed back to original design and created Dalehead for a period of time. So I don't believe Dalehead is an immediate continuation of original Scottsdale Anser.

p.s. Not a bad thread to make my 500th post on GolfWRX. LOL.

It was basically new when I got the putter. The Patina was put on by Ping as it's a stain. I also have a newer vintage Anser with the same stain. Great Putters! If I get ambitious I'll take a picture of the various Ping putters I own.

I think Medson is onto the history as I have 2 daleheads (lefties) , both with original shafts but one is a long step and one is short step. I like both a lot. They were made in different years obviously because of the different shafts.

As for why they are better... IMHO, the dalehead has a softer, thicker lines that frames the ball really, really well. These classic Ansers are meant to have no sightlines IMHO. Just frame the ball and putt... Let the magic of the putter take care of the rest.

This is legit. This is a Karsten CO Anser. This was the putter made between the original Scottsdale Anser and the Dalehead putter. This version was generally a little heavier than the Scottsdale and Dalehead. The patina on this one is outstanding!!!

Hello Everyone,

I'm reviving this post to ask about a Ping Anser "Dalehead" putter I have. I'm confused about the putter because the Ping and Anser are not stamped on the back of the weight pads. I looked very closely to see if they are worn due to use, but I can't detect any remnants of letters. Would someone have grinded down the back of the putter or did they make a version with no name stamped into the putter.

Thanks for your help. I attempted to attach pictures and received a 'request failed with status code 403'

On re-shafting older Ping putters, isn't it hard? They banged a round metal ball down the shaft, which expanded the shaft inside the hosel, to firmly install the shaft.

Don't they have to drill through that metal ball?
