Bethpage Black on Thursday, April 27 or Friday, April 28, 2017

Recommended Posts

I know, it is still a long way off but....I will stay a few days in Manhattan in April and my girlfriend grants me a day off to play (or try to play) Bethpage Black. It will be either Thursday, April 27 or Friday, April 28, 2017.

Maybe I can join somebody (a NY resident...) on here? I’m from Switzerland, 28 and currently around a 4 hcp.

If not, I read that getting on as a single should be managable. As I need to travel there by train from Penn Station: There is one arriving around 6am at Farmindale. Is that usually already too late to get out before noon?

Thanks!

I think if you were to go on a Thursday you shouldn't have too much trouble getting out before noon. From my experience it only gets really really crowded on weekend mornings. The one time I played there mid-week we still slept in the parking lot in our cars, but there were only about 5 or 6 cars lined up in the morning instead of the usual 20-30+

Is Bethpage Black worth the money?

I've been fortunate enough to play a number of courses that have hosted majors. Some I have loved, others I have not, but IMHO Bethpage Black deserves to have hosted multiple major and is one of the few (particularly in the northeastern US) that you can access without knowing a member. With that in mind, it's definitely worth a trip. I prefer other Tillinghast courses (Winged Foot, Baltusrol, and Philly Cricket), but Bethpage Black is worth the effort to go play

Sorry to dig this one out...

If somebody has a free spot next week (Thursday or Friday)...I'd be happy to join!

As other guys have said, I don't think you will have a problem on a Thursday or Friday.

I played yesterday, Sunday, opening weekend. Im a NY resident. My tee time was at 12.33. When i showed up at 11, I saw on the electronic board that there were empty slots on the Black as early at 11.30. As a single, you will be fine on a Thursday or Friday.

I played Black this past saturday. It was in great shape. Three bunkers on the course (2,8,10) were Ground Under Repair because they are replacing them with new sand and they're down the gravel. Other than that, the course is in great shape, especically for this time of year.

I may be in Manhattan at the end of June without a car and want to play Bethpage, can you take your clubs on the LIRR?

Yes you can. Do you plan on getting there early for the full "experience" and if so, you may consider renting a car.

I appreciate the response. I don't know much about the LIRR, but I was looking at taking it from Penn Station at like 5 or 6 am. I will be playing as a single as my fiance will be at a conference all day. Right now I am looking at it being June 21, which is a Wednesday so I am hoping getting there that morning I'd still be ok to get out as a single. Any other recommendations are welcome!

Completely agree, I just got back and played the Red and Green on Monday and the Black on Tuesday.... all of the courses, even for just being punched for the red were awesome... especially the Black. And it is absolutely worth the money. 10,11,12,13....from al the way back will give you a special appreciation for how good the pros are!

It was good. Read my review in the NYC Groups thread.

As others have said, Black is definitely worth the money and time. Red is also great if you want to play 36 / multiple days. You just won't find another muni like the Black though. I've been able to play it each of the past three summers by calling in through the phone registration system. You have to fax in your info to get registered, and then hit the phone lines hard when they open 2 days before you want to play (think it is at 6 pm EST) to get a spot, but I've gotten a weekday tee time before 10:30 every year (and walked on one year). Black holds a special place in my heart; great layout, no weak holes (unless you want to argue No. 1, which is sort of fair), kept in great shape. I've also been lucky to get paired up with good partners each year.

I'll be back week of July 4th this summer if anybody wants to play again...

When are you going to be up there? My wife is heading up to NYC from June 30 to July 2, and I was looking to potentially play 36, with one being the black. Let me know, as it'd be great to play with someone whose played there before.
