Upgrading irons after a long time - Mizuno JPX EZ 2016 forged?

If anyone can help me make a decision that would be very much appreciated!

I've gamed adams a4 forged irons for a very long time. I play them 3-SW, and i play the stock DG SL s300 shafts. My first set ever was a tight lies boxed set i bought to learn the game, then some used xhots. The a4s were given to me by a guy i helped with swing advice on the range who inherited them from his dad. I love the sticks, and thanks to some sage advice from Big Stu on another thread (basically, "your an idiot, you got to a low cap with them so stop trying to play razr x mb's with project 7.0 shafts barely able to get the ball in the air, go back to the clubs you know shoot 72s", which is the best advice I've gotten on the board probably - shout out to Big Stu).

I hard-stepped the set once so the 7 is the length of an 8 and its a bit stiffer than normal DG stiff.

The set is incredibly beat-up, and has seen thousands of rounds. Now, the bad news:

1. The a4s are ATR. Not a huge deal because i have a complete set that is conforming, which took some looking. But still annoying to have to remember to bring my certificate or be DQ'd.

2. I have a set of j40 DPCs, which didn't really do anything over the a4s. However, at a series of range tests this week a CF16 7 iron was destroying them in distance. Chalking it up to strong lofts, i bent the 7 iron head 2* week and put it on the shorter shaft. same thing - i'm like a full club longer with the "cup360" or whatever the heck in the CF16.

3. I don't like the way the CF16 looks at address. It looks too chunky to me. The a4 is a medium cavity back iron - just perfect, for me, not chunky and not thin.

In doing some searching, the Mizuno 2016 JPX EZ irons look almost identical to the a4s. Same basic size and topline. I'm not in a position to test them, unfortunately.

Any suggestions from the forum on a clubhead that is slimmer than the CF16 and more a4-like in looks but still has the punch of the CF16?

Since the mizzy jpx set is from the same year, could i expect the same distance from them as the CF16?

Finally, is it possible to coke-strip the black finish off the JPX clubs and make them raw?

Thanks in advance for any help! i'm sad to see the a4s go, but the extra yards are too much to pass up even if it means the chunkier topline. I'd rather get something else though if i can get similar distance in a smaller cavity.

Really tough to go wrong with anything from Mizuno. Being partial to Cobra, you might want to check out the Forged Tec irons. I have been very happy with them. Only set currently that might kick them out would be a set of Mizuno JPX 900 forged.

Jpx EZ top line is certainly bigger than apex no?

I had EZ forged before never got along with them well.

The 2014 cast EZ's are bigger but the 2016 EZ forged is basically identical to the a4.

If you are tight with those Adams, why not send them to be refurbished? Have them bend the lofts a little stronger and you are in business.

I have the 2016 EZF now. They're nickel...the 2014 were the all black. In terms of CF16 vs the EZF, i found the CF16 to be half a club longer on similar hits. couldn't tell you spin rates or anything...that being said, if i could have justified the significant price difference between the two at the time, i would have probably gone with the CF16. The PW and GW on the EZF are pretty damn chunky, even by EZF standards, and the CF16 are sleeker looking down at address throughout the set. As a better player, you might want to consider going with the specialized wedges in those slots instead. as a high HC'er, i found the CF16 really really easy to hit. the EZF are as well, but the CF16 were pretty magical, even with my flawed swing.

I have the 2016 ez forged. The heads are on the larger end of the spectrum but the design/color masks the large size very well. To my eyes they do not look clunky at all except as mentioned above, the pw and gw.

My other gamers are the Aams cb3s and the Maltby TEs and I find all of these these sets to be forgiving.

Note I am a 14 hcpper. YMMV, but as a 1.2 capper, your choice of clubs is greater than mine.

The c.f. 16s are definitely not chunky compared to the mizuno EF. They are clunky if you ask me.

Interesting, I just played a round with a the CF16, I found them to be incredibly playable.

To me they are clunky as well, but im coming from 2012 taylormade MC. I think the CF16 are shaped well so they don't look too much like shovels, but the playability of them are surprisingly good, so forgiving.

it has me thinking I should step up to a more forgiving iron set, now that I don't play much

Great feedback thanks. My issue with the apex is that I can see a little of the cavity sticking out the back starting around 7 iron. I can’t stand it. It’s not the topline but that small bit of protuberance you can see at address behind the face.
