I built the XV pro iron. I did not care for the feel, but I also didn't put it through it's paces for long enough to REALLY decide if it was a good club or not. I would go Maltby for their forgings

As I stated here in the UK, MALTBY is as rare as "hen's teeth".

Also, MALTBY customer service weren't helpful whatsoever.

Hireko have a few stockists and can supply 6-GW of various models, hence I need feedback

Nessism built a set of XV Pro irons about 3 years ago, posted a fair number of times about the process. It's in a thread about the XV driver, I believe. He liked them fairly well, but they didn't beat his then-current stix, so he sold them.

On a personal front, I built my wife a set of the Acer XS HT irons. She's fairly well pleased with them. Also built her an Acer XV driver, but she's yet to hit it; weather turned before she could take it on course.

And, on a lark, I put together an Acer XB 58*. I let it sit for a year, based on its appearance. It's fairly rounded, and I've generally preferred straighter leading edges on my wedges, and it's a bit shorter from sole to topline, giving it a lower profile look. It's also higher in bounce, at 12*. Finally put it in play and I've been quite pleased with it. Chips and pitches have been good, it's been surprisingly good to excellent in the sand, regardless of how firm or soft. I've even been able to flop it well, in spite of what I thought was too much bounce for such a shot.

So yes, I think the Hireko products are worth a look.

Thanks, but I've been in contact with them for over a month. They can do bundles but not individual clubs. Also, they don't do the TS range but can special order it 4-pw for £500.

Maybe next year they can do individual items as I only want 6-gw.

Thanks anyways

Yeah some of the Hireko stuff is very good performance wise. In 2014 I had a bag that consisted mostly Hireko stuff: Dynacraft Avatar Evolution driver, Acer XF 3 & 4 hybrids, Acer XS Pro irons 5-P, Acer XB wedges 50/54/58. Only OEM were my Cally XHot 3W and whatever putter I was using at the time but it wasn't Hireko. I achieved my lowest ever index that year of 3.1. That was mostly due to my grooving a slight over the top cut that totally eliminated the left side of the course for me. Once I learned to trust it my index dropped rapidly. The point is the equipment didn't hold me back. The caveat to all of this is a couple of things:

  • To me the performance consistency from model year to model year can vary widely IMO. For me the Acer XF and XS performed very well. The Acer XV I didn't like any of it. And I don't want to say the XV hybrids were the worst I've ever used but......yes I do. They were the worst I've ever used.
  • Headweights, lie, and loft, are likely to be more out of whack than major OEM's. If you go the Hireko route I'd find somewhere that will handpick for headweight for you.

Also if you make a mistake and end up getting something you don't like the resale on Hireko is gonna be pretty low. But you won't have a lot invested either - so there's that.

Good info.

I've never truly understood the resale conundrum

Example: my friend has bought a set of AP3 irons at £150 a club. After 2 months he wants to get rid or trade them.

He can get around £550-600 for them ...that's a loss of over £300.

So, if I buy a set of Hireko Prophet irons at £260 but resale is only £100 then surely the Hireko represent better value?

£300 loss versus £160??

Resale conundrum - you have it wrong.

On here, we all assume we are smart. We buy OEM irons at $100-$150 under market value. And there's no way to buy Hireko, resell and get close to the $150-$200 in profit I am going to make selling the OEM irons (I threw in another $50 there, as I know best when to resell clubs to max out the profit). Also, if I time the ebay 15% coupon sales correctly, I could probably make about $300 profit on those OEM irons.

I have found Hireko's tolerances to be no worse that any other manufacturer, and actually better than many OEMs.

Many view components as inferior, part of which would be potential to be further off spec. I doubt that actual specs are off any further than an OEM would be, and speculating that they are is rediculous IMO!

Lol, and likely to include video proof of said OEM being right.on spec with the best.guages money could buy!

The chances of resale is higher for used clubs from the Major OEMs but for lesser known manufacturers (Maltby, KZG), I guarantee the resale value won't be as high. If they're from clone head makers like Acer, one would be very lucky if he gets 50% of his original purchase back since the resale value is even worse.

Mind you, the quality from the lesser know OEMs are just as good as the others but try to convince the average Joe golfer that.

I NEVER buy a NEW golf club based on resale. My assumption when buying new golf equipment is that when I am done with it, I'll sell or trade it for whatever I can get for it. The only exception is buying something used from Play It Again Sports or a thrift store with intent to flip it. If you buy component heads and build a set, do it because you want to try the clubs. You WILL lose money on resale.
