I'm not sure if you would really consider the G Crossover a driving iron, but if so, then I do.

5 wood doesn't get used off the tee much (although it is one of my favorite clubs), but it does see action on long par 5's where I have no chance of reaching but would prefer to have a shorter wedge in, or if I have a long carry to a green but need a bit more stick than my Crossover iron can provide.

My Crossover typically doesn't see much action off of the turf, but is perfect for long par 3's or tee shots on shorter par 4's. At my home course one 337 yard par 4 is a very narrow fairway with maybe 5 yards of rough on the right before it meets the highway, and a large reservoir pond on the right. I can almost always count on using my 4 Crossover here and putting it about 210-220 out in the fairway. Outside of these, I seldomly use it on par 5's as I either resort to a shorter iron or one of my woods, but it is nice for punch outs as well, as thin tree lines can be found on most of the holes.

i have a few clubs at the top of my bag that i swap in and out as necessary. 3w, 5w, 2i (T-MB) and 3i (srixon 785).

USUALLY i have the 3w in the bag no matter what; however, i swap when conditions are as follows:

- Windy: 3w, 2i, 3i

- Fairway-finding specific course: 3w, 2i, 3i

- Par 5's on the course call for 250-265y approaches: 3w, 5w, 3i

- shorter course needing options off the tee: 3w, 5w, 2i

I'm doing something similar to gioguy21

Carry 3W, 5W and 3i, and wedges at the bottom can either be 50/54/58 or 52/58 depending on the top of the bag needs.

Yes. Mizuno FliHi cut muscle 3 and 4. TM sldr 5 wood. The five wood goes far. Any gap at points he will grip down lower. The DIs Have bigger bounces and more forgiving sweet area than the set irons and they go a little further too. They work out of rough better, but JP mostly avoids rough.

Ive got something similar in that I carry a 5-wood and a 4-iron which is 19*. To me, it may say "4" on it but its more like a 3-iron. I find that they arent anywhere close to the same club, even though the lofts are similar.

The wood gives me more distance and launches the ball higher but the iron is more accurate and keeps the ball flighted down. At first I considered going with one or the other but honestly, they both have their place in the bag.

I have a 3w that typically is a tee club. Used to rotate through a 3H and a 2i right below it, just added a M3 5w and it's money. Depending on the course the plan was to switch between 5w and 2i, but on certain shorter courses I can see myself leaving the 3W at home and playing the 5W and 2i since 3w off the tee can sometimes still be a bit long for some holes. Both end up similar distances but obviously 2 different ball flights.

I've done exactly this for a majority of the last 10 years. But recently ditched the 2 iron from the rotation and changed my 3 iron from Srixon 945 to Srixon 545 (hotter face, lower spin, etc). The 545 3 iron plays more like a driving iron and fits the gap perfectly between 5 wood and 4 iron. Don't have a need for the 2 iron any more and no more switching out clubs for different courses. Love hitting the 2 iron DI but it has to be really firm to take advantage for me since I don't really hit it any straighter than 5 wood and the 5 wood is infinitely more versatile.

Final decision depends on how the distance gaps shake out.

Some people assume my 7W and 4H go the same distance. Not so... 7W and 3H go the same distance. 7W launches higher - good for thicker summer rough and soft breezes; 3H launches lower, good for thinner fall rough and stronger winds.

I’m working on this right now. I was always a strong lofted 3w, 5w, then 3 iron player but as my back has gotten healthier and I’ve gotten distance back I’ve now got a big gap between 47 Pw and 54 sw and need to add a gap wedge and adjust wedge lofts so i’ll Need to either drop both Woods for a 4 wood or shift from a strong 3 to something more traditional lofted and drop the 5w.

It’s so damning how they came up with 14 instead of 15. You can’t pry my strong 3 wood out if my hands.

I have been playing a 15* FW and an 18* Hybrid followed by a 23 degree Srixon U45 bent to 22*.

Tried an Original One on a whim and fell in love with it so it’s essentially in my 3W spot. Traded out the 18* hybrid for a TEE CB119 5 wood. My thought process was I’ll rarely if ever try to hit the OO off the deck, but I still want a club in the bag that can approach 3W distances.

The CB119 is about as long as any other 15* FW I’ve ever hit on full swings. I’m still adjusting to the gap between it and my U45. My thought was that I would just choke down on the 5W and hit a high fade when I needed to bridge the gap, but it’s simply not that easy to elevate with that kind of swing. But on the flip side, I hit it much more consistently than I ever did with my hybrid.

Short story long, it’s totally doable just might need to tinker a bit

Most of my season Ive played the following combo:

TM M2 Tour 16.5* - Black Tie 80M4-X @ 43"

TM TP UDI #3 20* Black Tie HM4 105X @ 39.50"

Gapping works. Love both clubs. Will likely shorten the 3HL to 42.50"

I used to primarily play quite strong 3-woods. As I've corrected my swing & flight, realized a 4-wood hits the yardage I want and is more versatile. Its help simplify my practice this season too.

Play a 4 hybrid after a 5 wood. Same distance as a driving iron but much higher flight for long par 3’s and par 5’s and a lot more forgiving. Can flight it low if need be as well. Still have 4 wedges with this setup. PW, 50, 54, 58.

Look at my sig. Driver 3w 5w 3udi 4-PW and 54 60.

I have my irons bent to traditional lofts with a 48* PW.

Never ever feel like im missing out on a club at any end of the bag. For what its worth 3w is 15.25* 5w is 19* and UDI is 20.5* 4i is 24*.

Even tho theres only 1.5* diff between 5w and 3udi theres still a yardage gap and they fill 2 very different rolls for me.

OP here; as much as I tried to not get a 5 wood as they tend to balloon and spin on me I was able to put together a combination I could work both ways and even hit a low stinger with if a wanted. TS2 18 degree (at B1, slightly flat, like driver and 3 wood) with Tensei AV Blue 65X. I then switched out my 4 iron for a 22 degree #4 Mizzy MP 18 Fli-Hi with DG shaft. Really excited to get the 5 wood and play with the new setup. The only interest would be the new U500 utility, especially if it comes available with a new Tense AV blue shaft. Fingers crossed!!

Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, then 712u 3 iron. I bought a 4-pw set of 712mb and benched the 4 iron for the 712u 3 iron. My 5 wood is a cb2 with a whiteboard that is automatic for 220 carrry, the 712 is the 200 yard carry or must find the earth when swing goes to pot. I am not wrx long, but my set up is realistic for recreational golf expectations.

If anything can go right, it might!

One reason he uses older DIs is that a lot of the newer ones actually go too far. So if he had a p790 Udi, it’d have to be a 4 as the 3 goes just too far. So he’d have a 4 iron distance gap and so where does he go? A 3/4 swing 3 UDI is a more difficult shot.

Throttling back long irons is usually a poor bag club design.

It’s difficult today (and possibly rather expensive) to meld all the distance requirements due to today’s tech. It’s a nice problem. New set of irons can render your wedges with gaps. Same with woods, hybrids and DIs.

That use to be true when I carried my U45, but I dropped it for an Original One Mini Driver and a GAPR Hi 22° 4 DI / hybrid.

My Alpha 816 18° 5 FW was strictly for the fairway. Sorta funny; as I was hurt last month and it was the most I could swing from the tee and I hit it great. Now it's an option. The GAPR Hi 22° is a DI that's also a hybrid and now does it all.

When Adams died, hybrids went with them because no one had to compete anymore, they could just put out the same garbage year after year without innovating because there wasn't this one company kicking everyone's collective butts.

Fairways and DIs on the other hand, have kept improving more and more. Fairways have way better turf interaction and workability now so you're seeing more and more 5 woods popping up. Forgiveness and flighting with DIs have improved so much, and shaft innovations have made them a lot more accessible to average golfers too. Hybrids are soon to be a thing of the past IMO.

I have 3 tee clubs. Driver 10*. Mini Driver 16* and Ping Crossover 24*

I also carry a 5 wood and 5 hybrid, but I prefer the deeper face of the crossover off the tee to both of these options and use them mainly off the deck as a second shot option.

Why? Fairways have gotten to the point where they're better than a hybrid in pretty much every aspect. They're easier to hit, interact with turf better, easier to flight up and down, more forgiving, and have better workability. Plus from the manufacturing/retailer perspectives, they can charge you an extra $100 for a 7 wood instead of a 4 hybrid. Even for the seniors that play 6/7 hybrids, SGI irons have become so easy to hit those are no longer necessary either.

HOT TAKE ALERT: Any OEM that continues to waste time and money making hybrids instead of expanding their fairway selection to 7-9-11 woods and marketing the crap out of them being vastly superior to hybrids will be a business dinosaur in a decade.

I'm not sure I agree with this. My Big Bertha OS hybrid is easier to hit than any 7 wood I have tried. Big face, shorter shaft, much cleaner through the rough. I play with progressive head sizes from my driver, through my mini driver, 5 wood and then hybrid before I get to my irons. I don't like the jump from 7 wood to irons nor do I think I gain anything by swapping it out.

I also float between a 2i and 5 wood. Iron primarily off of the tee and 5 wood from the fairway. I struggle with woods and find myself using the 2i most of the time.
