JN Muirfield 20th Anniversary Set

Recommended Posts

Hello! Been looking for an older setup recently to mix things up a bit and got the oppertunity to pick up a Muirfield 20th Anniversary set 3-pw plus 1, 3 and 5 woods for about 200 bucks. Since i really dont have a clue what older clubs are worth i thought i would ask in here to see if this is a good deal or not?

Thanks in advance for any help

I've never played the woods so I can't comment on them, but I do have a set of the irons, and they are one of my favourite sets. The back of the iron in your picture seemed to show little signs of chatter, so I would conjecture that the faces are also decent, but ask for a picture or two of the faces just to be sure. Especially the mid and short irons. If the whole set is like the iron in the picture, then I'd say you've done well.

Tough to comment on price. I'm trying to remember what I paid for my Muirfield 20ths. It was less than $200, but it was irons only. Plus, I bought mine in a different country.

The woods look like they're in pretty decent condition. If the back of the iron is an indication of the overall condition of irons then I would say $200 is one heck of a deal. A pristine set of Muirfield 20th irons would be work a bit more, especially to someone wanting to collect a great set.

By the way the set is called Muirfield 20th as a reference to Jack's 1986 Masters win. At the time US Amateurs were considered a major championship so the 1986 Masters marked his 20th major victory. He was playing a set very similar to this blade so this one was made and released to retail. This was my first set I purchased after I got my first career job after college (back in 1989). I purchased a set last year of mint condition, never been hit Muirfield 20th irons (3-SW) for a tad bit more. Here are a few pictures of my set.

I had someone correct me on here with a reference to the catalog from back then indicating these were named for the 20th Anniversary of his win at Muirfield which completely makes sense vs. Muirfield having any frame of reference to his 20th major. Nicklaus supposedly played with a protoype, but not named after the Masters win and catalog may have been printed and released before that or shortly after. I'd asked the guy if he could locate it, but never heard back. I thought digging one up would be cool to keep with my Muirfields.

They are basically a VIP head restamped. I have 3 sets of Muirfields but none 20th editions. Recently I have had some 20 th edition PW and SW show up on the yard. In fact the week after Christmas I sent a bud of mine on another nameless site a 20th PW and SW because he had bought a set with those items missing. Those were not pristine by any means. I have touched on this before some Muirfields are stamped on the hosel "Tour Forged" and others are not. Now a RUMOR has surfaced in real life and not on here or any golf forum that the ones stamped "Tour Forged" are actually Miura forgings. I am checking on that RUMOR now. 2 of my sets are stamped tour Forged and the ones I did the Apex conversion on are not. Like I said a RUMOR may just be a urban legend. The guy I heard it from has been known to be slick and says stuff to drive prices up IMHO. He was trying to hawk a Tour Forged set to me for $250 I told him basically to go fly a kite because both sets I had were in better shape.

Lillchodden.

I am sure you are from sweden. I been looking at the same set.

The Woods are like New. But the irons looks to have some brownings att the short irons.

Since I already have 2 set 20th irons, i told him i Will not Buy them.

But i want the Woods. Just have 10 of them before LOL.

He do not want to split the set. So my question to you, do you want both the irons and The Woods?

Maybe we can split them.?

Do you have any other persimmon clubs to sell?

And you can see right there in the ad the difference between the 20th and a regular Muirfield. Look at the difference between the muscle backs and the toes

Robot, I bought my set (still my only new set of irons) out of Nevada Bobs in Phoenix in 1987 or 88. Also just after finishing college. Sure wish I still had them. Our courses in Greeley are still covered in snow too. Need to hook up for a round this year, I love Collindale, and a little baseball talk along the way

OP. Someone has a set listed on the BST now, not pristine, but quite a bit less money.

Absolutely!!! I am going to start my off season practice sessions in the next couple of weeks (weather permitting). I want to have 8-12 rounds in before the beginning of April as I have a round scheduled in Augusta on April 6th with my boys. Always love to beat the snot out of them. :D

Lots to talk about baseball. Good grief! :D

yes that is me selling the Muirfield 20th anniversary irons. Been on this forum for years and find it extremely difficult to sell here, so i've taken down my ad and will just sell on eBay. Less work.

I have another set of muirfield 20th that i plan to regrip and game. Adding a set of recently refinished m75 woods to go with this set and still need to figure out the putter of which i have way too many.

Part of it also is outside this corner of WRX the old stuff is considered old , antique and outdated. They have not seen the same light we have

What a coincidence, I feel old, antique, and outdated. It’s a match made in heaven!?

Actually, it’s probably good not that many are listed. I’d probably be buying old sets all the time, they’re just so darn classic, and classy, looking. And I just don’t have the room for extra stuff. However, if a really pristine and full set of those 20ths (or Staffs, or MacGregors, or ....)show up, who knows......

Yep you are just like me will jump on a classic or free deal in a heartbeat even if you have to make room----- I am old antique and outdated and am feeling it this morning because it is rainy cold here. I actually could have played with the NY boys this Am but it is too cold and damp and one of the guys from the Dog Fight at my club called and I turned him down.

  • 4 weeks later...

Muirfield 20th's refer to the 20th anniversary of his British Open win in 1966 at Muirfield. It has nothing to do with 20 major championships. I don't think most people include the two US Amateur wins in total major championship stats anymore. The Muirfield 20th design is the same as the Jack Nicklaus Limited Edition irons as shown. This was the head design Nicklaus used from about 1981 through his win at the 1986 Masters. The clubs came out to capitalize on the demand for MacGregor after his Masters win.
