Best Putting Mat to purchase

Recommended Posts

Want to see what's everyone using out here and what people recommend.

I've seen the PuttOut and Perfect Practice but want to see what other quality mats are out there at a better price point or should I just bite the bullet and get one of the two above.

TIA

Birdie Ball is incredible / multiple sizes, options, and even variable speed.

I'd steer clear of the Putt Out mat. It is nice, but due to the pile of the carpet a rut/channel actually develops down the middle of the mat where all of your putts roll. After about a dozen putts you can notice the ball rolling straighter and straighter and almost wobble if it starts rolling off line. Now a quick brush with your foot can get rid of it, but you need to do it about every 10 putts

Big Moss is the way to go.

I started with a Birdie Ball and it can't stand up to any traffic (kids/dog). I purchased a Big Moss directly from their 'factory', and it's still incredible a couple years later. It's Tony and his son putting these things together, and they do a fantastic job. They were really great people and took me through their whole process. Tony showed me the Birdie Ball material and other materials that he is constantly trying out, but nothing has beat his original rolling surface.

Ballsy.... "trash". I guess you don't have one if you think its a "piece of green foam"....because it would be really hard to create downgrain and against the grain putts on a piece of green foam...

Birdie Ball SPECIFICALLY instructs you not to allow your pets on it. I guess, like a million other products, if you do not use it as intended then it wont function as designed.

I have tried a few different ones but for my money I cannot see past the PuttOut mat. Good speed, it lies great on the floor. I can say with absolute certainty that it has improved my putting from 6 feet and in.

I’m going have to agree with Jack..I had one and originally I thought it was ok. I put a sharpie line down the center and used it for a bit. I used it on carpet and for whatever reason every put went straight. I couldn’t miss and it was so soft under my feet it jacked up my balance. Once I got on a actual green I was absolutely garbage and my stroke before that was very very solid before that

Just got the PuttOut Mat and the Trainer. Works great! Didn't have an issue with the centre line. Needed to flatten it abit from the packing but works great. Noticed my putting is severely flawed from practicing with the trainer lol

Well I don't have one anymore because I threw it away. I had a large Big Moss (which was awesome) but had to sell it when I moved and didn't have the proper space for it anymore. I bought a Birdie Ball (which was trash) instead and was disappointed, especially after coming from the Big Moss. 99% of people will be more satisfied with something other than the Birdie Ball, but if it works for you, great!

This is from their own website, and they tell you it is foam. I guess you should take it up with them.

"Our putting greens are made out of a proprietary aerated polymer (a super fancy dense foam material), that we treat the surface of in order to draw out the grain. The material is ½" thick, so the ball will drop into the hole without being on a raised platform and no contrived ramp is needed."

Big Moss now has a new and improved version out and its great. I've had the PuttOut in the past and it gets the job done if you have a flat solid surface and ok with short putts. Big Moss is the way to go in my opinion. they provide a piece of hard foam that creates a long gradual increase in slope that can be added or removed but with it allows the ball to drop in the hole.

I’ve never had any issues with the centre line at all and it has had some pretty heavy use. I have run a vacuum over it a few times as my son enjoys crawling all over it whenever he is in the room but apart from that, all good.

I can only speak to my experience but have not had that issue either.
This probably says a lot more about me than the trainer, but for some reason it just seems like some feminine protective device or sculpture ala Marie Barone, lol. Can't get it out of my head and my wife just looks at me like I'm stupid when I tell her it should have come in a pink box.
Back when I used to watch some Crossfield is when I first saw one in action and then @ddetts put one into use and I checked out what he thought of it and then bought one. Only thing I can say for sure is I should use it more.

A real sleeper product that no one has but is fantastic. I have two of them and putts exactly like the turf at the PGA super store. https://www.realfeelgolfmats.com/product/putting-turf/

I really like the Birdie Ball, but have to echo what some others have said, if you have a dog I would look a different direction. I have a 4x8 Birdie Ball that I got as a Christmas present a couple of years ago, but I'm so scared of my dog leaving marks on it that I never leave it out. When you don't leave it out, you have the issue of having to wait a bit for it to lay flat after you unroll it when it's been stored for a while, so it's never something that I feel like I can just toss out and roll 20 putts before bed whenever I feel like it.

I have another 1x6 Birdie Ball that came free with my PuttOut purchase and I leave it laying out all the time because it feels free and it slides less noticeably up against a wall out of the way. But it does have multiple marks from the dog stepping on it.

So my personal opinion would be that if you don't have dogs/kids, and you have the dedicated space to leave it out most of the time, the Birdie Ball is tough to beat for the price. If you do have dog or space issues, I think it's either step up to something like the proputt if cost isn't an issue, or what I will likely do is just get something like the puttout mat once the throwaway BirdieBall gets too many marks.

I have used one for a year now and have enjoyed it. There is a slight groove that develops or at least the grain of the carpet seems to lay down in a line. However after brushing or vacuuming it, it seems to go away. I deal with more of a slight right to left break but I am fairly certain that is due to the floor not being level and not the mat.
