A couple interesting things here aside from the new irons. I remember there being talk about how Rory was in the 10.5* SIM for awhile, interesting to see a big change to the 8* which assume was done for face angle, especially since he has it turned one click "higher", so same loft as the 10.5* turned all the way down roughly but a much less open face angle. Also that 70XTS shaft in his driver appears to be completely untipped, which is unusual for him (unless this photo was just staged prior to final building). I wonder if Rory is chasing a different ball flight (more draw, more distance?) with this change, or is maybe just having a hard time drawing the ball off the tee.

Another thing I caught....I don’t ever remember Rorys PW being a part of his “iron set.” It was always a wedge head around 48* dating back to his Vokeys. Sorta like JT. That PW must really suit his eye.

Also no more cavity backed 3/4 or 5..... I wonder if the buzz or marketing of these is that they’re more playable at the top of the set....

In a combo set, most go to blade at 7 iron. So, if they could truly make the 4-6 playable, this set could sell way more than the average blade.

We will see!

Good catch! Either he is being a very good company man here or there is something that works for him at both ends of the bag. I think Rory has talked about generally being a "toe miss" guy, and the P730s are super traditional blade in terms of having a sweet spot that is more heel side, something the P760 long irons he bagged did not share obviously. Obviously these P-7MBs have some toe weighting going on, so I wonder if that removed the need for the 760 replacements.

I think he's had a matching 9-iron / PW for a long time (as long as I can remember in his Nike and TM days).

The other thing I noticed was that he's back to 3 wedges. This is the same as at the Players win last year, although he's mostly been a 4 wedge guy (something like 46-52-56-60). I assume this mostly has to do with this week's course setup and feeling like he needs the different clubs at the top for a handful of holes/shots. Adam Scott played PW-54-60 for a long time but finally moved to 4 wedges pretty much all the time.

He’s switched between iron set matching pw and matching wedges for years. Also, he’s been in p750 3 and 4 iron, 5-pw p730 for quite awhile

The sim is very fade bias. I could see him going down to go up to take some of that off.

Yeah that is what I was thinking as well. We saw that he neutralized the fade bias with weight placement in the M5, so I wondered why he wouldn't just do the same with the SIM. But the SIM is much lower CG, but also lower MOI, making his toe miss more dangerous from a flight and spin standpoint. So I think he left the fade biased CG alone to protect him from that miss a bit, and instead went with face angle to neutralize it, and maybe the change back to the XTS as well.

Its fun to theorize the tech because with someone as consistently good as he is with the driver, dissecting his changes around new/different tech is really the best look we get at what the tech is truly responsible for.

At every event I have seen, he has played the standard SIM, but always has a second MAX driver in the bag on practice days. I don't think the MAX has ever seen the course though. I may be wrong but it seems to always be the SIM.

One thing that we all must remember. That "stamped" 8* driver could be actual 10 degree loft(standard)setting for all we know. No way to know the true loft he is playing in a specific setting unless Trottie, Wade, Keith give that info up.

I also saw pictures of Rory with a SIM Max driver in the past few weeks. I have said it before I believe, even though I have always been a high spin player, I did not get along with the Regular SIM driver. To My Surprise with my upward driver attack angle, I did not Spin it enough, which lead to very inconsistent misses. I could not tell where I hit the ball on the face, found myself looking for ball or tee marks on the face after shots. The MAX with a changed rear weight to heavier is just great for me, very consistent on misses which is what I look for. Seems most players both Pro and high ranked AM's are playing the regular SIM.

He made the switch during the playoffs last year. There was a par 3 I think at Liberty National where it required a 9 iron or PW and couldn't get the right distance. Switched to the set PW and has stuck with the set PW since. Has normally always played a "wedge" for a PW until then though.

For that to be true though, his 10.5* driver before would have to have been 12*+, unless he is making a significant loft change here as well. This 8* head is set one click higher, which lines up with his previous 10.5* set three clicks lower. True, we don't know what the actual measured loft is, but it really wouldn't make much sense for it to be anywhere outside ~8* based on everything he has played up until now.

Tour tip yes, but they make the tour version in 1*, 1.5*, and 2* versions, with his previous spec of having a 10.8* actual loft driver turned down to 8.8* suggesting that he uses the 2* version. That is not to say he is here, but just saying.

Saw some photos today of Rory using a plumbers neck Soto during a practice round. Should probably expect the Soto to be in the bag for the start of the playoffs.
