Tiger Woods WITB 2017

Be interesting. I can understand why he hasn't changed full set of irons by the time Hero comes around, I feel it's strange if he will still have Nike wedges! Been chipping for a while now so has had plenty of time to dial in TM wedges in his back yard.

Are TM not going to put some pressure on TW to play their clubs after signing him?

Read an article yesterday, basically there has been no discussion at all between Tiger and Taylormade on irons yet. He hasn't approached them and it's up to him to initiate. Got the impression from the article there was a feeling it was all a bit too quiet on the Tiger and Taylormade advertising/branding front.

Maybe he will just TGR Nike irons and TM woods for the next while. Wouldn't surprise me. I am a little surprised TM wouldn't have been pushing to get him irons to his spec as soon as possible and get them in the bag for hero

Maybe TW and TM are going their separate ways?

A lot of possibilities. Maybe Tiger is going to stick to their woods and they renegotiated their contract. Maybe he hasn’t had enough time to test TM irons yet since he just started swinging fully weeks ago. He did have TM utility irons in the bag though. Yet I can’t see TM pulling out without seeing how Tiger plays first. You don’t jump ship that fast if Tiger has any chance of playing well again.

maybe because he’s Tiger Woods he doesn’t have the same contract as a John Huh or a Jason Day and has more flexibility in his bag makeup

Yes, I’m sure some flexibility early on. In the first few weeks the big names can use their old putters. But flexibility long-term is not letting Tiger swap out 8 of your company’s clubs for someone else's.

Interesting. That article sounds more credible than I imagined. I still think Tiger will be using TM irons when he gets on Tour next year. I’m guessing Tiger is just using the old faithful irons for now because he really wants to do well at the Hero. He doesn’t want to be messing with a new swing and new irons before he gets under the big lights in a few weeks.

If TW is still with TM I bet they push him into their iron line soon. Initially, he had a full bag deal minus the putter. We would have heard if TW or TM did an amendment to that deal.

I don’t think anyone is going to push tiger to do anything. I’m sure they will try to make a set up to his standards and expectations, but I’m sure he won’t allow anyone to push him into something he doesn’t want. And I don’t think Taylormade wants him to use something he isn’t fully comfortable with. After all, it’s the driver and woods that people see the most on tv anyways. He doesn’t have time or tournaments to waste experimenting much anymore if he’s serious with his comeback. I’ll be curious to see what Taylormade comes up with for him.

You think TaylorMade would let Tiger go all of 2018 without using their irons? They already lost almost all of 2017. They've got to push him sooner or later. At least by the Masters.

I’m in the camp that believes TM will let Tiger play whatever he wants as long as the woods are TM.

Until TM truly makes an exact replica of his current irons, he is not switching. Tiger just gaming their new p790 UDI (custom of course) would lead to even more sellouts of a hot club.

Ideally if Tiger games 3 woods, driving iron and wedges eventually. That would be plenty for TM to be more than happy, as long as he’s healthy and playing again obvs.

Forcing him out of his irons won’t help either of them. The guy is the best iron player of all time, let him do his thing

I think he will continue using TM woods (they are arguably the best woods in the market) and he will be allowed to game his Nike irons and wedges. Having such a legendary player just using their driver and fairway woods is huge for them itself (one would think). If his monumental return ends up being a flop, signing him may not exactly work as they had planned. Then, you may see them tighten their grip and enforce a 14 club contract if they keep him at all.

If it didn’t matter they wouldn’t have signed him to a 13 club deal. You are paying more for him to use your irons.

I can tell you that they’ve built Tiger a million demo clubs since they’ve signed them. Every time I talk to my TM guys they are saying we just build this or that or 3 of those for Tiger. They literally wonder what he does with everything they send him especially since I imagine he’s not out there pounding balls non-stop like he used to be able to.

absolutely what will happen.... driver and 3 wood is what matters.... id venture a bet that TM would rather he played their ball than irons if they had to choose....

bottom line... Tiger woods holds the control.... TM isnt going to sue TW...not in a million years woukd they cut their own throats... unless they are willing to do that its all just talk...

No one is going to sue anyone. Either Tiger will play TaylorMade irons per the terms of his contract or the contract will be rewritten.

They signed him for his name. They want to use his name and picture in advertising. When there is a picture of tiger hitting a shot they want us to see the driver or the 3 wood.

The only people who will be able to tell which irons he is using in pictures are the club geeks on this website (and yes, I include myself in that).

We already know he is using their driver. Any time he tees is up it's obvious that he is using a Taylor Made driver. When he is on TV it will be obvious that he is using a Taylor Made driver. When his picture is on every website, blog, Instagram and Facebook account at the end of the month it will be obvious which driver he is using.

If he switches to Taylor Made irons nobody will know. And most people won't care because it will be blades and the majority of golfers can't hit blades.

Do a quick google image search for Taylor Made golf Dustin Johnson. And for Jason Day. And for Justin Rose. Every picture is of them finishing their swing...with the driver. That's the picture that Taylor Made pays for. Not one of them hitting a 6 iron.

  • 2 weeks later...

Right Guys, only a few days until Tiger arrives in Albany. We should know Monday/ Tuesday what clubs are in the bag?

What irons and wedges we think he will be using?

Cannot wait! Let's just hope for a healthy week with no setbacks

Happy thanksgiving

It’s going to be very interesting to see TWs bag setup. I cannot wait, T Dubs is finally back!!!

Doubtful tiger would need to have a contract rewritten. His contracts before have always allowed him to play whatever he wanted.

I am of the opinion TM wedges are a big problem for Rory right now. Leading edge height not low enough for him causing him to punt his wedges instead of nip them.

Tiger’s contracts have absolutely not allowed him to play whatever he wants. TaylorMade isn’t paying him to play Titleist woods, Mizuno irons, and Vokey wedges.

When he was at Nike he could play whatever he felt was best. His revenue was influenced by number of clubs in his bag but he had the freedom to play other stuff if he felt it was better.

No way. There’s a reason Tiger went to his Scotty Cameron as soon as Nike golf left the business.

He was leaving money on the table by not playing the Nike putter. I said that. He didn't have to play it. He decided it was good enough given the money he was leaving on the table.

Could Tiger have played all non-Nike clubs and still been paid by Nike golf?
