Butt end of grip is loose /twisting .

Recommended Posts

I had my driver re gripped with a golf pride tour wrap at Dicks. About a week or so later I could feel the butt end of grip starting to twist. I went back to Dicks and they took the grip off , put more adhesive on , and put it back on. Well....here I am about a week later and it's starting to get loose AGAIN. I've never had an issue with this before. It was the same guy both times . So....is it the grip , or he doesn't know what he is doing ??

Per the previous comment he either didn't use new tape or put new tape on top of old two sided tape.

Also possible is that the inside of the grip wasn't clean.

Take it back. New grip and shaft clean of all old tape and tape residue.

That can happen. I think in this case, they cheated and taped over the old tape. Now that the grip tape is gooey underneath, nothing short of taking all off and starting fresh is going to work.

I’ve had this happen multiple times.....now I know it’s just laziness on the part of the installer, not stripping old tape!

A lot of votes for the correct answer. Old tape turns to pudding under the new tape. Take it back...ask for a new grip and new tape and make sure the old tape is off and the residue on the shaft is cleaned off. It’s really slick at this point.

Do it yourself. Dicks (as most big box stores) "Club Experts" are butchers. Its not that tough to do a regrip your self. then you know its done right.

Can't re-use tapes normally once they've been activated, you'll lose a lot of the adhesive that way. Regripping is pretty simple, albeit may cost you a few more dollars to buy some easy materials (tape, solvent, and if available, a vice or something to secure the club shaft still). You can buy any of the stuff to re-grip shafts at golfmart, etc. All in all, under $20. You'll probably want a tape 'scraper' also. Cut the grip off (don't bother trying to keep these, I've found it not worth the effort), scrape off the exisintg tape. Reapply new tape. Liberally apply solvent to the adhesive tape AND inside the grip (assuming the inside of the grip is clean and dry to begin with). Secure club and slide the grip on. You'll have a few minutes before it starts really getting tacky, but try to be quick and efficienct when you put it on, know where you want the grip seam to line up, etc.

2 worst parts of regripping; 1.) getting the previous tape off, especially if they used s*** tape, and 2.) getting the new grip on when you did NOT use enough solvent.

Definitely ask (demand?) for a new grip. Even if they properly strip and clean the shaft, getting any soft, gooey bits out of the end of the grip is going to be iffy. Sure, it'd be possible to clean out, but given they possibly took shortcuts the first time around, not sure I'd trust them to this task given it's hard to get in there and be sure they did a thorough job.

I had it happen with a driver, same guy, same driver, twice. I had to take it back twice. Eventually he got it right. It was my club pro, who has done a lot of grips for me over the years and it was the only time I ever had a problem. I didn't ask for an explanation, though, so I don't know why it happened.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

Won't do you any good in this instance since you've already paid, but re-gripping is the cheapest/easiest club work you can DIY, for future reference. No special tools required (other than hook blade utility knife, double sided tape and solvent), and you can be sure its done the right way. Also, you can experiment with different build-up layers.

Kind of resurrecting a dead thread, but I had this issue recently with a Golf Pride CP2 Pro grip.  It happened twice.  I regrip my own clubs and have been doing this for years with no issues with other grip types.

This particular grip has the "control core" stuff at the butt end of the grip.  My hypothesis is that whatever the rubber or material in that control core does not let the grip solvent evaporate in that part of the grip.  The rest of the grip seemed reasonably well adhered.  I gave it 24 hrs to cure, including leaving it out in the sun for a few hours.  Tried it on a driver and a driving iron, so these were relatively high stress clubs in terms of grip.

The tape at the butt of the grip was still wet, so clearly the solvent wasn't fully evaporated.

Maybe it would have set after days, but I wouldn't be able to trust it.  I am do with those grips now and will stick with MCC, tour velvets, etc.

i found that with whatever material that is, I actually leave them butt side down on the vent for the ac and that seemed to do the trick.  now after i do a grip, specifically with the CP2 wrap I use the grip solvent method, however still use an air compressor when putting them on mainly to blow all excessive moisture off of the tape.

Does that make sense?

Yep makes sense.  I did leave it upside down but not on a vent.  Definiltely a good idea.  I though the sun beating down on the black grip would be enough to drive the solvent out, but not good enough.  I guess I would just need to be more patient with it.  The air compressor is a good idea too.  I guess I didnt like the grip enough to go through all this, but if I run into a similar issue with a grip I love in the future, I will file these idea away in my mind.

I recently had my clubs re-gripped with the GP CP2 Pros as well and I had the same problem.  I took them back to the shop, they re-gripped the loose ones and now I'm having to take them back AGAIN!  Same issue with the solvent as well.  Weeks later, still damp.  I'm going to take my set back to the shop tomorrow and make them replace all of the grips with something else.  I'm done with the CP2s.

Yeah, it was super frustrating to me.  Maybe this grip really need to be blow on with no solvent or something.

The last 1/2" of the CP2 is tough to get on.  Measure and mark the shaft so you know you have it fully inserted.  I used air on my set, noticed later that 3 were not fully seated so I blew them the rest of the way on.  Odd that these were eBay clones, still had the control core but the small part of the grip wasn't as thick as a genuine one was.

I had the same issue with the CP2 Pro grips at the butt end. Pure goo at the end when removed, weeks after regripping.

I got a question for you guys. I am having the same problem with cp2 grips. The logos on the back of the club on the upper hand part are twisting. I just re did all my clubs with them and let them sit for 24 hours. Is this the same problem you guys were experiencing? Is it just a flaw with this particular grip?
