Titleist TS1 and TS4 Drivers coming in the Fall

Recommended Posts

Just received my TS4 yesterday and boy is she pretty! I was able to get it out to hit a bucket of balls and play a few holes, I'm certainly impressed so far. It took some dialing in on the range. Lefty head only comes in 9.5*, I typically play 8.5* so immediately turned it down to 8.75*. Found quickly that anything turning over a little too much just didn't have enough spin and did not hang in the air long enough. Also tried my old Grafalloy Blue in it and dispersion suffered due to too little spin. In past Titleist heads I have always been fit into the Atmos Black type profile, a good low/low shaft. In fear of the too little spin, I ordered it with a shaft that has a bit more launch/spin (Fuji Speeder Pro 64x), and I'm glad I did. With this shaft, and the setting dialed up to 10.25*, I was hitting Phil Mickelson "BOMBS"! Nice high, but flat and penetrating ball flight that just wanted to keep going. Most surprising was how straight it seemed to want to go. Certainly wasn't swinging my best, hit some all over the face that I expected to look up and see moving well offline in one direction or another.... but bad swings and bad contact seemed to hold it's line nicely. In the 6 holes I played on my home course, I was very excited to see where I was playing my second shots from.

Β

For reference, up until this year I'd claim to jump around both sides of scratch, but with kids now in sports and the crappy Michigan spring of 2019, I've been happy to break 80 in the couple full rounds played. I've gamed exclusively Titleist drivers (and every model... yes even the 907) since the 905R, but finally jumped ship after a season with the 917D3. Have been playing the 2016 M2 w/ a Fuji Pro TS 63x for the last season. Had finally traded in my long time loyalty for the better performance I found in the M2. It's early and I haven't sold the M2 yet, but I'm quite confident Titleist has won me back with the TS4!

Which shaft did you go with? I just ordered the 9.5/Fubuki ...It will be tough to replace my XXIO X though.

Played 18 today with the new TS1 (10.5, Fubuki, R Flex) and the it lived up to the hype. Coming from a Ping 400 Max with a similar shaft, I was easily 10 yards longer and more consistently straight off of the tee. Was fun to hit and I really looked forward to teeing off on the each hole. FYI - I am certainly in the target audience for this configuration: Mid-fifties, slowing swing speed, etc. Still need to do some fine tuning on the hosel settings, but overall very happy I put this in the bag and feel like it will stay there...for a while.

I feel the same way about my XXIO X Driver. Can't wait to take my TS1 out for a spin (TS1, 9.5 Fubuki,S).

I hit a couple dozen on the range with our club’s new TS1 demo. Only had the stock 40g speeder shaft. While I have a swing speed averaging around 106 (not really the target player), I generate very low spin with my driver. Smooth swings produced bombs for me. Dispersion was a little too much - a better fit shaft would help a lot. Interested to get it on trackman and see some hard numbers.

I have the Fubuki in A flex. It feels so light but I can really feel myself getting through the ball with it.

So two rounds in with it and the results are very promising. First and foremost. It's as accurate as the 400 MAX AND 410 + that I played.

I just got Arccos as well. So ilm able to track my driving stats. The two rounds in I'm averaging about 8-10 yards more than I was with the 410.

However one if those rounds included a back 9 played in 96 degree temps on Thursdsy where I was just spent and hit some pretty weak drives. Went from a very solid 40 on the front to a 49 on the back.

Thought I would add a few thoughts. I have had my TS4 for about 2 weeks. I really like it a lot. As drivers have gotten bigger and more forgiving I have started hitting them shorter and higher with way too much spin. In the last four years I have played Cobra F6 Pro, F7+, F8+, F9, 917 D3, and M3. For me this blows all of them out of the water (except for maybe F6 Pro, but that thing with the weight forward was pretty punishing on mis hits). I have always fought spin and have a steep swing (6’4’ with long arms). I am generally a club longer with my irons then my playing partners, but am always behind them with the driver. I have been easily out driving them the last 3 times we played. I find it plenty forgiving, and have noticed the ones I don’t β€œget”are going as far as good ones with my F9. The feel/sound is ok, I will miss that Cobra feel, but I can get used to it with the added distance. Wish I had access to a reliable launch monitor to give specific numbers because I am sure its a crazy improvement.

Side note: I have played almost all of the high end low/low shafts in an effort to fight spin. A bit of a shaft ho. Got the stock EvenFlow T1100 75 6.5 and had it tipped 1/2” at the factory and played it while I had my preferred shaft,Tensei Pro White 70TX, getting a titleist tip put on. I may keep it in play.... Great feel and really good performance so far.

Was fitted for the TS2 back in April. Was hoping the fitter would direct me to the TS3. When I heard there would be a TS4 that was lower spinning I decided to wait. I tested the TS4 and compared it to the TS2 using the same launch monitor from the April session. Clearly, the TS4 was better. Before settling on the TS4 I decided to give the TS3 one last shot. Glad I did. The TS3 was the clear winner. Because this testing was done indoors I still needed to see how it performed outdoors. I hit the TS3 outdoors yesterday and compared it to my current gamer - 917 D3. It will take some time to dial in the TS3 but even on mishits, it was 15 to 20 yards longer than the 917. Unless something crazy happens when I do onr additional outdoor test, the TS3 will be in the bag. The shaft that works best for me is the Hzadus Smoke 60 gram.

This year I'm playing with a torn, and deteriorated rotator cuff tendon in my shoulder. Found out from the MRI that there isn't much that can be done, short of shoulder replacement I guess. The tendon is so deteriorated that it can't be reattached. My doctor, a golfer, says it would be best to live with it for awhile.

Β

So I'm taking a 3/4 swing, and trying to be as smooth as possible. I'm trying to minimize the pain. I'm guessing that my swing speed is now short of 90 mph. I saw the TS1 last night, and it looks pretty good. I'm going to have to hit a few balls with one. Getting old sucks.

It's absolutely a driver that responds well to a smooth swing even at 85 to 90 mph. It's when I try to ramp up a swing and get fast in transition where it doesn't perform as well as it can.

My fitter was using a trackman on a range outdoors...but he was lying pretty clearly about my numbers with my gamer. He was saying I was carrying my gamer like 227, when I know I carry it 250-260 all the time. I hit it multiple times, beginning, middle and the end of the fitting. Every titleist driver I hit, TS3 and TS4 were like 255 to 265 carry. It was good, but I have to do an on course test to see...The TS4 is a nice stick. I was hitting an 9 * EPIC Sub Zero L stamp head with 6S Tour AD IZ vs TS4 9.5* with HZRDUS Black Smoke 6.0.

On course test is the only true validation. Dont let fitter turn the ball optimizer on and off, I think thats what happened to me.

And the issue with them being released earlier than what the OP posted in January is what exactly? Especially since some people here told him he was basically FOS? Is something being released earlier than first reported a bad thing? This place never fails to amuse.

Β

So I was able to take a TS1 to a driving range and try it outside. I'm not smooth enough in transition to handle such a light driver. The first 7 shots that I hit with hit were low and smothered dead left. I hit a few good shots after that, but consistency was nowhere.

Β

Another lesson (re)-learned.
